    I know those feelings. Oddly, there are a few stories that got me going back listening to on something like audible or re-reading. Certain books I feel like I read every year or two.

    I actually did the same thing with Slade House as I loved that reading experience so much that I wanted to invest in a physical copy to reread. Definitely an all-time favorite. I ended up buying an ebook of The Creeper because that just sounds like too much fun! I’d say Imaginary Friend and How to Sell a Haunted House were my favorite horror novels from 2023

    Great list of books! I put many in my Goodreads "want to read" list. I'm a huge Clive Barker fan, one I would recommend for you is his Weaveworld. It's probably my favorite of all of his books due to his writing being incredible with world building, amazing characters & taking the reader on an epic journey. Thanks for all the recommendations!

    • @GentleReader01
      @GentleReader01 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Weaveworld has literally the best opening ever:
      “Nothing ever begins.
      “There is no first moment; no single word or place from which this or any other story springs.
      “The threads can always be traced back to some earlier tale, and to the tales that preceded that; though as the narrator’s voice recedes, the connections will seem to grow more tenuous, for each age will want the tale told as if it were of its own making.
      “Thus the pagan will be sanctified, the tragic become laughable; great lovers will stoop to sentiment, and demons dwindle to clockwork toys.
      “Nothing is fixed. In and out the shuttle goes fact and fiction, mind and matter, woven into patterns that may have only this in common: that hidden amongst them is a filigree which will with time become a world.”

      When Florence becomes influenced by the house, after her seduction by the spirit, her breasts are left bitten, bruised and scratched. Afterwards, pretty much everyone else in the house see's her breasts because she just has them hanging out. And I understood that the progression of her breasts rotting away was a physical metaphor for her mind, but it just felt unnecessary and Matheson could have easily just used her face for this instead of her chest. It also leaned into Edith's inner struggle with her "lesbian tendencies" especially the scene where she's preparing Florence for her first séance, where she just lusting after Florence in such a cringy, obviously written by a man, way. I mean it was written in the 70s, so I kinda expected the bawdy writing when it came to the women.

    I read Brother this year and loved it, it was like watching a car crash. Seed was also pretty good. Some elements could have been stronger, but an interesting read.
    I’ve never been a massive fan of short stories but The Books of Blood by Clive Barker has some great stories. The Yattering and Jack was one of my favourites.

      It's kind of served it's purpose. The back story is that when I was 15-16, that's how I'd greet my then friend group, and one person in this group was always like "omg Roya, why do you say that, you're so embarrassing" and they would continually put me down for me just being myself, like I couldn't even tell a joke without this persons input saying I was a weirdo and that no one liked me (obviously they would treat me like this because they were the insecure one) Anyway, I put that to the back on my mind and when I started the channel when I was 19, I wanted a unique intro that wasn't just "hey guys!" So I was like, screw it, let's go with the yohoho and see how that fits. And then it became a thing and people liked it. So it was partly that I needed an intro but partly a FU to this person and anyone else who had tried to make me feel bad and insecure about myself. And yeah the person found my channel and proceeded to try to befriend me again, the audacity!!! I'm 31 now, and I've outgrown being a passive aggressive petty ass person, mostly.... 😂🤣
