    Hello Ed, so glad to see your review of this refractor. I have been interested in astronomy since 5th grade, and am now a retired [music] teacher. I purchased an 11" Edge HD SCT, AND a CGX-L mount to go with it. Loved what I could see. I have been to many star parties, and always marveled at the sharp/clear images on friends' refractors. So, I purchased said refractor (ES ED 127mm triplet apo), looking forward to seeing great sights. I was very disappointed on the first few outings. My 11" SCT has a focal length of 2800mm, and when I used a 23mm eyepiece, that was "high" magnification (I thought!). I tried to use the same eyepieces on the Explore Scientific, and really could not see much; at least, not what I was seeing on other scopes owned by my friends. I was not aware of the difference in calculating magnification powers (focal length divided by eyepiece = mag power). Finally purchased some 'single digit' eyepieces (mm-size: 9mm, 7mm, 4.7mm) and began to see great things. This refractor is what I like to take with me on travels.
    However, dragging around the CGX-L mount (which could handle the refractor VERY well!) became a real exercise challenge. I purchased a Meade LX-80 tripod/mount, and found it too light for the task, although the weight limit was within range of the mount. Sold the Meade, and purchased a Sky Watcher EQ6-R, and am immensely pleased with the mount! It will even handle my 11" SCT very well.
    So, great recommendations for the Explore Scientific 127mm triplet apo, as well as the Sky Watcher EQ6-R tripod and mount. No complaints, just pure fun and enjoyment.

    Ed, It’s very nice to see NGC 6939 and 6946. 35 years ago, those were not difficult for me in a 3” f/15 refractor (doublet, uncoated) with Tele Vue eyepieces.
    As recently as 2019 I saw them pretty well in a 15x56 binocular.
    NGC 7331: similar story. Not as easy though.
    I was in semi-rural (Bortle 4) skies on good nights.
    I note these observations to alert you and your viewers that a person can see a lot with modest instruments.
    Thanks. Superb review. As usual!

    Another great review Ed! I noticed on your website that you had compared this visually to an 8" reflector. I found that interesting as I too wondered how a 5" refractor with no central obstruction would compare to a larger aperture telescope with an obstruction of some sort, in particular for planetary work. It would also be fun to see a comparison of the ED127 vs AR127 as you had plenty of good things to say about the AR127 as well.

    Neato. I have a 5" f/12 achromat. It's a really nice DIY scope made by the previous owner with D&G lenses. It's big, of course, and an EQ6 is barely adequate. (Maybe if I made some wooden legs for it....) And in crummy seeing I get a suggestion of purple fringe around Jupiter. Still, it has generally excellent contrast and color fidelity. One night a long time ago, I could tell the Jovian moons apart by their color. something I have never seen with my also excellent 8" and 12.5" Dobs.

    Ed...you do such a great job with all your reviews. I just want to say that I do appreciate you taking so much time ( and I do know that each review may take several moths to complete), to do such a thorough analysis of each OTA. I would like to ask just one favor. When you show that an optical assembly may be purchased as (generally) the same scope from another manufacturer, I am hoping if you could discuss the differences in the assembly; specifically the glass used to in the OTA. Why is there such a price difference between the TOA 130, the EON 130 and the Stellarvue 130. Has to be in the craftsmanship and of course...the glass! Or possibly do a video on just the differnt types of glass currently used in the OTA's being produced today!! Thanks again Ed!

    Hi Ed, I like your channels content, the no nonsense & easy to understand equipment reviews etc. Just wondering whether you've ever thought about reviewing any of the William Optics Refractor telescope ranges? It would be interesting to get your take on their optical performance. I've only just started my astronomy journey and am fortunate to have got hold of a William Optics Zenithstar Z103 and I'm very impressed with the build quality but haven't had much opportunity to use it in anger yet.

    Ed, another thing of note is the Essential version uses fcd-1 glass where as the next model up uses a better focuser as well as fcd-100 glass, so has even better color correction.

    Nice review Ed, thank you. i was particularly interested to read the updated version, because for several years I owned a Meade Series 5000 127. Very similar, but it suffered a bit from blue fringing. It would seem the later versions have improved in that respect. The focuser was at one point damaged, and although I managed to keep it going I eventually replaced it with a good quality R & P, which transformed the scope. But still the blue fringing niggled, so before my advancing age completely catches up with me I've sold it and bought a Sharpstar 140. Superb optics and massive focuser. I'd love to see your opinion of it if you can get hold of one to review. I'm in the UK, otherwise would offer mine! Keep well, Peter.

    Can only agree with you, Ed; it is a awesome scope in it's price range. I'm mainly an imager, and this is the only scope I use (though I use the CF with the 2.5" hex focuser) at the moment. I would definitely recommend the CF version if one can afford it - it takes the mount requirement down to a solid mid range, and is more travel friendly (where applicable). It's of course a jack of all trades, master of none-scope, but if one's looking for a scope that can (to some extent) do anything between planetary and nebula imaging, and still be a solid ocular scope in this price range, this is a great choice.

    I don’t remember where it was, but I read that the first diffraction ring of a C-9.25 is smaller than the airy disc of a five inch refractor. Of course to make a fair comparison you’d have to have steady seeing conditions.
    As far as telescopes looking bigger in person, it’s a marketing gimmick - advertisers hire giants to stand next to their telescopes, and short people don’t like to display their tiny stature on videos. I hear that Ed Ting stands about 6’ 7”.

  • @gclaytony
    @gclaytony 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another great review. My "if you want one for all" is my Esprit 100ED f5.5. Fast compared to most other refractors and the FOV turns out to be from perfect to acceptable for the majority of popular DSO nebula, although it requires careful framing for the Soul or the Heart nebulas. If was I going to add an additional scope, it would probably be something in the 1200 to 1500mm fl range; thinking strongly of a RC or iDK/cDK. I just don't want to deal with the mirror flop/movement issues of the SCT's. My observing is 100% imaging at this point, no visual.
    There is quite a bit of tube extension on the Esprit to get in focus with the OEM field flattener, nothing noticeable per se, but always felt like it flexed slightly due to the moment arm of camera, fliter slide/etc. I ultimately replaced it with a Moonlight Express Nightcrawler. VERY robust design and no flex.

    I have an Sky-Watcher 100mm ED with near perfect collimation and glass, even in poor skies containing smoke from wild fires the Ring Nebula is easily seen. While its views of M44 are not as breath taking as in a 10" dob, it does a very good job for its size. [EDIT: By the way, you photo of the moon is very good considering it is being displayed at 1080p and with TH-cam's data compression. And, thank you for showing and discussing Stephan's Quintet, it is truly a treasure trove.]

    As usual a very enjoyable and informative review.
    I bought the carbon fiber version of the ES127 app this week. It was on sale at about 25% off for $2500 - perhaps they have a new version in the works. I also have a Tak FC-100DZ and a Celestron C8 that prior to this were my largest scopes. I wanted a larger APO refractor but was put off by the weight. All my other scopes are about 12lb or less, as is my AM5 mount. But, remarkably, with the CF tube the ES127CF weighs only 14lb so I figure this will be manageable for me.
    Plan to use the ES127, as well as my Tak, for imaging small DSO's with my Powermates and also eyepiece projection. I have high hopes for visual observing too.

    Firstly thanks very much for the video.
    Had a question, and I know the answer is rather difficult but wanted your opinion on it.
    I already have an Orion XT8, and wanted to get another telescope for astrophotography. My budget is about 5G's for the mount and the telescope.
    Wanted to make a decision between 1 of these 3
    Explore Scientific ED127
    Orion EON 130mm ED Triplet Apochromatic
    Celestron ADVANCED VX 9.25" EDGEHD
    Which one would you choose?

    • @edting
      @edting  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Uh....are you suuuure you want to get involved with this? You've seen my numerous warnings, right? The average person is committing themselves to a 2-3 year learning curve, and the various branches of astrophotography take a lifetime to master. Astrophotography begins with the mount. You should strive for big mount/small scope, as opposed to the other way around (many beginners make this mistake). Master the mount first. Then you need to deal with the field flattener or coma corrector, the autoguider, the software, and the camera. Then comes the OTA.

    I got into astronomy in the late 90's. I remember reading some of Ed's reviews on Astromart back when it was privately owned, over 20 years ago. Ed is one of the most trusted reviewers in the hobby and is an avid astronomer. He is one of the few "celebrities" in the hobby that you can literally buy gear based just off his word. I first started looking at Takahshi's after reading one of his reviews.

    Ed, great review. I purchased an Explore Scientific ED 127mm a few months ago used from an online retailer. When I received it I was not able to focus it. I contacted Explore Scientific and they were great to work with even though I purchased the scope used. After trying to fix the problem over the phone, I shipped the scope to Explore Scientific. It turns out the issue was I needed to attach a 2" tube extender to obtain focus for visual use. I thought the tube extenders were just for back focus for a camera. Anyway just wondered if this was normal for refractors or just this one. Thanks.

Pairing a Artic 420 with it buying it used I got the upright prism finder with it. (In white) will ES exchange it fit a CF version? So far the only quibble is needing to use the both 2" extension and the x0 flatter I bought used is no longer available. That and I need to buy a case. for the rare time it won't be in use. 😍🤣😍😍🤣🤣🤣

This was always the case on many nights. I think I had an exceptional mirror and I always kept it as perfectly collimated as possible. This was easy because the scope was short enough that I could make adjustments while looking through the eyepiece.
      I'm seriously thinking about picking up the ED127, but I don't want to be disappointed either. I bought a Celestron C8 and I wasn't happy with the washed-out, low contrast views after using my litte Newtonian for so long.

    How about the glass? FCD100 vs FPL-53 ?

  • @kenkiser36
    @kenkiser36 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The orignal and cheaper ED127 is the "Essential" model. It uses Hoya FCD1 which is supposed to be comparable to FPL-51. The more expensive FCD100 ED127 has the upgraded focuser and uses better FCD100 glass, which is supposed to be comparable to FPL-53.
    Both of them are great and I believe they're both available in carbon fiber tubes as well. I am unsure if the better FCD100 glass would make any appreciable difference for visual use but i'd imagine it would certainly make a difference for astrophotography. Great video as always! Everyone wants a big refractor that gives a nice view but not everyone wants to break the bank on an AP or Takahashi.

    Said the "Essential" model differed based on accessories? Doesn't the next model up include a considerably higher grade of glass, further reducing chromatic aberration? Plus, the real problem with a scope that shows chromatic aberration like the AR model isn't blue halos, that really only bothers photographers. The real problem is the defocused blue/red light that is spread OVER the image of the planet, reducing contrast, detail and skewing colour. You can actually see this effect during high power viewing of moon craters. The shadows will have a blue cast.
