Fun fact when they were filming the scene where Jason is telling Mathesar who really are and the reaction of Mathesar faces, done so perfectly by Enrico Colontoni, Tim Allen told the director he had to step away for a bit 'cause he didn't like the way this scene was making him feel, and Alan Rickman responded "I think he just experienced acting"

My favorite two joke in this movie in this movie is Tony Shaloub’s character Fred being a stoner and also that he is a Lebanese actor portraying an Asian, to the point he changed his last name to Fred Kwan and squints in the movie at times, a clear reference to Kung Fu with David Carradine.

Thank Enrico Colantoni, who played Mathezar. He was the actor who came up with the bizarre ways that the Thermians moved, walked, clapped, laughed, etc. The creators then had the rest of the Thermian cast model their behavior on him. (This aspect of the film totally makes sense: The Thermians' true form is so alien, there's no way their body language would react to events similar to humanoids. So, in their 'appearance generated' form, the tech would try to approximate what they were really doing, but it would of course look wildly unnatural.)

One of my all time memories from this movie was when Sigourney Weaver's character is your typical "blonde" actress who is just there for her beauty, her big boobs, and not her brain. When she says "Let's get out of here before one of those things kills Guy!" which shows her believing that the people with no names are the first ones that dies in these series, not that any of the rest of THEM are in danger.

The actor playing Sarris is the late British actor Robin Sachs. You'll see him a few times on Babylon 5, where he plays a Minbari for a couple of episodes, and then later, a Narn. The retrospective/making-of documentary "Never Give Up, Never Surrender" is absolutely fantastic.
    This is an homage/love note/parody.
In 1999 a then unknown Sam Rockwell did this abd The Green Mile. Darryl "Chill" Mitchell (Laredo) did 10 Things OHate About You as the teacher. He was severely injured in a motorcycle accident in 2001leaving him paralyzed from the waist down and has been in a wheelchair since. But he is still acting. He was on NCIS: New Orleans.
Young Laredo briefly hit it big. Corbin Blue starred in the High School Musical fims.
Mathazar is Enrico Colantoni who was Veronica Mars father, the lead in Flashpoint, and a major later season supporting character in Person of Interest. He read for this part playing it straight. They weren't impressed. He asked to try something different and created the Thermian way of speaking on the spot based upon vocal warm up techniques. They horedchim and had him teach all the Therminans how to do it.
Sarris is the late Robin Sachs, who I only know as occasional villain Ethan Rayne from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

One of my favorite little direction bits in this movie is how the movie starts in a TV screen aspect ratio with the original show, and then the bars slide to a wide screen film aspect ratio for the rest of the movie.
Film was originally a hard R film with much darker tone, a sex scene, explicitly language, and more violence. They toned it down both in preproduction and post production. A few of the obvious bits are things like Weaver very clearly saying "Fuck that" and all of the stuff with Tony Shaloob and his pot addiction. He's always stoned out of his mind and carrying a brown bag of munchies.
5:59 They used an actual Star Trek convention for the Galaxy Quest convention. If you look in a few of the shots, in the far background you can see some of Star Trek stuff.
Galaxy Quest influenced Star Trek. For the film they had two versions of the "Protector" bridge. One used for the old TV show stuff, and one used for the "real thing." The real version was built on a gimble so it could throw the actors around realistically for the space battle. For the next Star Trek movie, Star Trek Nemesis, they built the Enterprise E bridge on a similar gimble. Neither cast liked it, and it "scared the Hell out of them."
There was a pseudo-officla meta website dedicated to Galaxy Quest called the Questarian, which had fake episode synopsis, behind the scenes info, and prop images. It served as a bit of viral marketing for the movie.
E! Did a fake documentary of the show, which you can find on youtube. It's quite fun. They used B-role from the movie and filmed interviews with the actors to really sell.
Galaxy Quest was received very well by most of the cast. Jonathan Frakes (William Riker from Star Trek TNG) had to convince Patrick Stewart to go see it with an audience of Star Trek fans. Stewart was cautious because he thought it was making fun of Star Trek fans, but he said he was bent over laughing so hard while watching it.
Brannan Braga, one of the producers on Star Trek at the time, basically said they were out of a job, because Galaxy Quest did such a great job of capturing the spirit of Star Trek.
Galaxy Quest is often considered one of the best Star Trek movies ever made, ranked in the top 5, often.
The ship in the film is called the "NTE Protector" The NTE stands for "Not The Enterprise."
During the dinner scene, Tim Allen as Jason, as Captain Taggart says "This is like corn fed Iowa beef!" This is a reference to Captain Kirk being from Riverside, Iowa.

    • @vederianl9723

It was filmed in 3 aspect ratios: the early scenes, featuring clips of the TV series, were shown at 1.33:1; the initial part of the story, set on Earth, was framed at 1.85:1; the scenes set in outer space were screened at 2.35:1. The shift to 2.35 occurs 20 minutes in as the bay doors on the ship open to send Nesmith back home. I believe they dropped the 1.85 for the home video to not confuse customers.

Conventions are very much like the convention a the beginning of this movie. If you rewatch, keep an eye out for two things:
    1) as Sigourney Weaver's uniform zipper gets lower, so does Sam Rockwell's.
    2) Guy (Sam Rockwell) spends most of the movie worry that he'll be the crew member killed. But, during the end battle with Saras on the bridge, everyone EXCEPT Guy gets shot. He merely stands there screaming.

    Physics/Chemistry note:
While the movie is full with the usual technobabble and tweaked science for such SF shows, Beryllium is an actual element. And it is not radioactive.
(But don't lick it… or anything in chemistry. Often the toxicity is stronger than the radiation)
This might also be a reference to Original Star Trek. Initially they intended to use 'Lithium' in their warp drive, until they learned that also exists, so they named it "Dilithium".
Li and Be are next to each other on the Periodic Table, being the third and fourth ones after Hydrogen (H) and Helium (He).

"Galaxy Quest": The best "Star Trek" movie that Paramount didn't make. Two other 1999 movies of note: "The Iron Giant" and "October Sky." These are early Cold War-era movies that should be better known. The former is an animated classic where a robot makes a choice, while the other is a semi-autobiographical look at NASA scientist Homer Hickam Jr.'s model-rocketry-kids-in-coal-country life. Sigourney Weaver specified that she would play this as a Blonde. She felt her "IQ slipping" every time she wore the Blonde wing...all the way home.;) So, you want to see another movie like "Galaxy Quest"? Take a look at "Tremors" (1990).

George Takei and James Doohan couldn't stand the sight of William Shatner, and although friends for decades, Leonard Nimoy wasn't on speaking terms with him when he died. Nichelle Nichols was going to quit the series due to lack of interesting things for her character to do, but Martin Luther King, Jr. talked her into staying (and Uhura inspired Whoopi Goldberg's career). Despite later writing another book with the opposite title, shortly after Star Trek's cancellation, Nimoy wrote I Am Not Spock.
William Shatner was famously hated for deriding fans with "It's a TV show!" and "Get a life!" during an SNL skit in which he made fun of Trek conventions.
Yes, Rainn Wilson, who plays Harry Mudd on Star Trek: Discovery and Short Treks!
I didn't expect him to say Avatar - I expected Ghostbusters.
Although most of the more explicit aspects of the running joke were cut to get a family-friendly rating, Fred was high on weed for the entire movie, which explains his laid-back attitude toward. . . everything.
There were plans for a sequel, then they changed to a TV series, then Alan Rickman. . .
I love him most for Monk, but Tony Shalhoub was also great in Men in Black and MiB2. Sam Rockwell was top of the line in The Green Mile. "Jane Doe" was recently a villain on the Netflix series Y: The Last Man. Besides his role on Star Trek, Rainn Wilson had a recurring role on the last 2 or 3 seasons of the hit CBS series Mom. Speaking of Alan Rickman, you have to see his first film: you MUST react here to Die Hard!
The Thermian commander created the Thermians at his audition.

Mark 5:11. William Shatner, whenever I conversed with him and Leonard Nimoy, as they always seemed to be using the Buddy System, was a very nice Human. He even requested that my friend and I call him "Bill" after enough encounters with us. They both remembered us and only needed to be reminded of our names. Mine was easier because he played "Jim Kirk"!
He and George Takei and James Doohan would get annoyed by so many redundant questions about whether or not they got along! It was like people weren't listening to those that were in line ahead of them. A few meek females would admit to having just returned from the restrooms, and so they did miss out!

Mark 8:09. My men's restroom faux pas was with actor Lou Ferrigno! He wasn't green, and he wasn't that much taller than me, so I didn't recognize him. My friend and I had been eating, and my hands were covered with condiments such as mustard, ketchup, mayonnaise, and pizza sauce because I got my favorites as if it were a buffet, you see.
So my hands needed washing. Lou and both tried to enter at the same time, and we collided. I went right for a sink, and he did, too, so another collision! But he then used a urinal and needed to wash again. I washed my arms, too, so I was still there. Then we both went to the same paper towel dispenser! Another collision!
I didn't learn who he was until he appeared on stage! By the time I got his autograph, he still recognized me! 😁
Then, at the late night, "Supper with the Stars" event that begins at Midnight, by the way, he and actress Joanna Cameron, were walking around together as the only ones among the guests that had done comic book characters. She was the first live-action actress as "Isis" for "DC" and of course he was "Marvel". So they were like a Q&A team. 😎

It used to be that the Sci-fi channel would show clips from Trek conventions. Sometimes, conventions would be advertised locally. I think the film does a good job of depicting the height of the TNG convention experience, based on those sources. In the past 10 years? Maybe not so much. I am glad you kept the spoilers to a minimum. When the movie came out, the trailers unfortunately spilled the entire plot. "Why even bother going to a convention..." Many conventions had a free level, where you could roam the main floor, but some things were off limits. The hecklers might have gotten in for free - just to mock everyone.

The Blood & Ice Cream Trilogy (also called the Cornetto Trilogy) is mostly a non-parody parody. 3 movies loosely connected by actors, directors, and ice cream that tackle zombies, buddy cops and...well...REDACTED. The movies in order (for what little it matters) are "Shaun of the Dead", "Hot Fuzz", and "The World's End" and they are amazing and basically why people know the name Simon Pegg.

Most of the main cast of Star Trek had minor complaints about how Shatner acted on set but the only one who ever made a big stink and still does is George Takei. Back then shows were mostly centered around 1 or 2 main characters and Shatner admitted that he let it go to his head at the time. A large part of that was fostered by the studios back then. All but one cast member got over it and let it go decades ago before most of them passed away.

It is a full Sci-Fi action series, but includes MacFarlane's quirky sense of humor to poke fun at itself and its source material in a good-hearted way. Maybe y'all will add The Orville to your reaction list if you haven't seen it yet?

Great job, guys, keep it up. And, yes, the original screenplay had clear indications that Tony Shalhoub's character was high, which is why he is so mellow and calm and eating snacks all of the time. But it was changed because of rating code compliance. Also, he is supposed to be playing an Asian character as seen in the opening clip from the series.
