The Peeks! From nr Loddiswell in South Devon. Hazelwood House a wonderful old Victorian country house. A hotel until recently now private again. The architecture all carrying the strangely noticeable quirk of having a round window in every gable. I used to stay at the old farm nearby and the converted barn had that round window. I often fancied it might be a nod to the humble Biscuit on which a lot of The Peeks fortunes were based upon. The first Peek also from humble origins became a Lord Mayor of London.
Of The Freans I apologise, I know not a lot apart from the wonderful baked produce.
Fascinating histories. ~Thanks for posting this video.:)

I was a van boy in 1965/68 and also helped organise the cricket at their fabulous club and ground at Sidcup Bypass. I also remember playing table tennis in the clubhouse over the Vita-wheat building?

I worked in the mixing room of peak Freans in the late 70s doing the night shift. It paid well at the time £110 per week. I was on a working holiday at the time.

As a boy of 10 years I lived in Clements Road directly opposite Peek Freans during the war years of 1943-45. The main entrance to the factory was then sited at the end of Keeton's Road. On Monday evenings we were allowed to a 2 hour Scout/Cub meeting in a workers gymnasium sited at the top of one of the tall factory blocks. Our house faced two of Peeks factory blocks and during the V1 (Doodlebug) raids my father and I sat on our front window ledge during the raids. WE watched for the V1 and if they approached in the gap between the factory blocks it was to the shelter outside the gap we watched them fly by and listened for their engine shut down and the bang. Another fact never mentioned is that Peeks kept pigs during the war which were housed in a compound in Clements road. They woke me up regularly each morning with their squeals at feeding time. What memories !!!

That hall is still there. It seems they are knocking that building down currently. We've got an office on site.

Hi Aziz, I'm looking for former employees to interview as part of a thesis on the economic history of the area. Would you or your dad be interested in talking about his time working there? It could just be by email if preferred.
