Having just viewed part 4 of your pictorial revue of Rotherhithe through the ages, I am moved to remark yet again upon the quite superb effort that you must have made to produce such a group of films. The still photographs and videos together with their respective captions blended together so well. That together with your excellent choice of music, made for compulsive viewing insofar as I was concerned.
I would like to think that your films have gained you some well deserved recognition and respect locally and beyond that, that local historical societies, schools and civic amenities such as libraries, either have already or might yet indicate an interest in showing your splendid work.

The borough of Southwark has so much history that you could spend years researching it and still only scratch the surface. For instance just down the road once stood Bermondsey palace England's first parliament resided over by Henry the second and a stones throw from the palace stands Neckinger estate where pirates were hanged hence the name Neckinger. On a side note although not a part of Rotherhithe history Charles Dickens Oliver Twist was set in Rotherhithe

You show the South portal of the Rotherhithe Tunnel, but not the two air shaft buildings on the Rotherhithe side of the river, no’s 1 and 2. The two shafts on the river banks, no’s 2 and 3 were originally pedestrian access points to the tunnel, and still contain ornate iron staircases for this purpose, though they are long closed. I hope to walk through the unelected soon to see what is still visible.
I recently walked along the riverbank from Rotherhithe station to see the surface building for shaft 2, the old red lifting bridge and next to it the large lock which I assume was an entrance to the Surrey Commercial Docks. In the river, just a few metres out from the bank and close to shaft 2 there is a cylindrical metal object sticking up out of the water, maybe a couple of metres across. It’s position relative to the shaft puts it almost exactly on the line of the Tunnel; do you have any idea what it is?
Thank you for uploading these videos.

Hello Stephen, thank you for viewing my video, I’m really grateful, this video along with Part 1, 2, and 3 were literally put together as a way of showing my collection of photos of Rotherhithe from 2007, they were just sitting on my PC and always wanted to do a before and after theme the best I could with the pics I had. 🙂
The metal sticking out of the water is the remains of what used to be a “Dolphin” which was an aid for shipping and Lightermen, hope that’s helpful? Thank you for viewing and commenting - keep well and stay safe in these unusual times, all the best - Mike 🙂

My dad worked the Surrey Docks in the 50s and 60s as a stevedore.

Fabulous look back. I'm from Rotherhithe - Albion Street, and although I'm miles away now- my old home is actually visible from over the actual entrance to the tunnel, and I loved seeing it, wonderful memories of the Cookie household and Rotherhithe as I once knew it! Thank you.
