  • Join me as I make a medieval reticulated headdress, also called a crispinette or caul, and the hairstyle that goes with it. This is a project that I've been wanting to get right for a few years after failing miserably the first time I attempted it.
This video isn't a tutorial but here is a useful net making tutorial you can try:

Your dedication - in making your own hairnet, and decorating it and then making a headband is amazing. Don't put yourself down! What you have achieved is brilliant!

Thank you so much! I hope I don't sound like I was putting myself down too much. But I'm blaming that on this being my first ever video on TH-cam and I was feeling very nervous and insecure 😄 I am actually very proud of this project even if it's not the museum-quality reproduction I wish I could afford to make.

So I have short (very short) hair and basically just use a black muslin as a head wrap that is long enough to create a false bun at the back, throw a colorful nylon hair net over that to secure it and give the open knitted affect and voila! Instant medieval styled “headgear” no scissors or thread required 😂 I sometimes also layer either a box cap at an angle on top or drape a silk veil with period pins either side if I need more of a statement to balance out a larger garment.

Love this video! It's so well made, funny and interesting. Would love to see more about how that loom works and how to make a net with an ice cream stick!

Hey thank you for the video! I'm doing basic-level research on netting a caul (ie, do I really want to do this?) And your video really helped demonstrate the knotting process. Can you point me to any resources you used specifically for the netting process? I loved the embroidery you used on the net, by the way.

Thank you! I'm glad you like the video and found it helpful. This blog (knotsinanet.wordpress.com/) is the best resource I've found on medieval and renaissance hairnets and has very good instructions for the netting process.
