The 1839 invention that didn't replace artists
Photography changed the world. There's no doubt about it. And the contemporaries of that wonderful invention had all sorts of opinions about it. Kind of like we do now regarding AI art.
In this video, I take a look at a few 19th-century opinions about photography and debate whether or not it's fair to compare it to AI art.

What on earth is a vasquinha? - Making a 16th-century dress from a poem part 3
มุมมอง 562ปีที่แล้ว
This is the 3rd and final part of this project, and also where things get tricky. It’s amazing how much error there is when you try to solve things by trial and error. Creating the tabloid magazine the middle ages should have had
มุมมอง 38ปีที่แล้ว
What if medieval Europe had a pan-European magazine circulating the different courts and noble houses keeping everyone up to date on the latest gossip, tragedies and scandals affecting their foreign peers? Well, no one can make that a reality but we can pretend! So join me as I design a magazine cover for a tabloid-style publication covering the decade of 1030 and then animate that design into ...
Portuguese rice pudding - but it’s a french recipe from 1864!
มุมมอง 1442 ปีที่แล้ว
It's always interesting to see how other countries and cultures talk about our own. In this case, it's a french recipe that I found in the book "À Portuguesa: Receitas em Livros Estrangeiros até 1900". It comes originally from the book "La Cuisine Classique" and follows the trend of adding oranges to a dish and calling it Portuguese. A trend that dates back to the renaissance and the introducti...
Making a 16th-century dress from a poem - Part 2: The Kirtle
มุมมอง 3182 ปีที่แล้ว
The second part of this project is all about making the kirtle. I made it out of wool broadcloth using a pattern from the Tudor Tailor. Although that book focuses on English dress, the silhouette is very similar to what you can find in Portuguese art so there was no point trying to reinvent the wheel 😄 See part 1 of this project here: th-cam.com/video/008M-yRP-e8/w-d-xo.html Sources: www.notion...
Making a 16th-century dress from a poem - Part 1: Project breakdown and smock
มุมมอง 2702 ปีที่แล้ว
"Descalça vai para a fonte" by Luís Vaz de Camões is a classic of Portuguese literature. But despite being so well known and so present in our popular culture I couldn't find a satisfactory depiction of what Lianor (the main character of the poem) is wearing. And that's only about two thirds of the content of the poem... So I decided if I want something done right(ish) I have to do it myself. A...
The Poetic Roasts Of The Medieval Fashion Police
มุมมอง 1453 ปีที่แล้ว
Being able to have our embarrassing outfits and moments laughed at many years in the future is one of the wonderful possibilities that technology has brought to us. Over 500 years ago, things were different but, the Portuguese court dared to dream. Garcia de Resende, a courtier and scholar compiled a large collection of poems produced by his peers and himself. These poems are of a very varied n...
Making a Medieval Reticulated Headdress (or crispinette, or caul)
มุมมอง 4.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Join me as I make a medieval reticulated headdress, also called a crispinette or caul, and the hairstyle that goes with it. This is a project that I've been wanting to get right for a few years after failing miserably the first time I attempted it. This video isn't a tutorial but here is a useful net making tutorial you can try: knotsinanet.wordpress.com/instructions-tyohjeita/ Images from: www...

    So I have short (very short) hair and basically just use a black muslin as a head wrap that is long enough to create a false bun at the back, throw a colorful nylon hair net over that to secure it and give the open knitted affect and voila! Instant medieval styled “headgear” no scissors or thread required 😂 I sometimes also layer either a box cap at an angle on top or drape a silk veil with period pins either side if I need more of a statement to balance out a larger garment.

    It’s real interesting, I haven’t thought of photography flooding the world with images. I tend to liken ai to the rise of photo manipulation in the 90s and digital art in terms of wow new technology, but starting at photography itself makes so much sense.

    Congrats!!!!! It looks amazing! And you look amazing in it as well! I loved seeing you work and all the closeups of the needlework (my favourite parts). I look forward to seeing a re-do if you will eventually post that as well. I started to write a comment about the process of underwear turning into "middle-wear" and eventually outerwear, but then you also mentioned that! So no need! I think it could be it. It's still something we see happening. Aaaahhhhh I feel your pain with the fabric! I have a solution that should be somewhat epoch friendly. To make slippery fabric more stable you can use spray starch (or a starch bath if you wanna be old school). It's easy enough to make (or you can buy it, but check reviews to see how it handles different fabric. I make mine myself, so I change the portions according to the fabric. My enemies: lace, silk, very open weave, velvet, crappy Carnaval fabric etc.) and it washes out nicely. Depending of the recipe you can get the fabric so straight you'll have the best cut of your life (perfect for a double or triple layer cut and it lessens strays!). I usually do a light spritz and only wash it after all the cutting, pressing and needlework (both grouping and decorative). Just make sure you have it very straight before spraying, because it can keep some of the shape. Again congrats! Parabéns! Very pleased for (and by) all of your project and the care and research you put into it!

      Thank you so much!!! And rest assured that if I redo the vasquinha I will 100% post it here. And thank you also for the starching advice. I'll keep that in mind next time I have to work with an uncooperative fabric.

    I know very few people check the description, but if you do you can find a link to a bibliography page with all my references. Also, from 1 to 10 how much do you think I hated that fabric?

    Traditional Portuguese Rice Pudding Ingredients: 1 cup of rice 1 litre of milk 250g of sugar 4 egg yolks 1 or 2 pieces of lemon peel 1 stick of cinnamon powdered cinnamon for decorating Instructions: Bring the milk to a simmer with the cinnamon stick and the lemon peel; Once it starts simmering, add the rice and let it cook; While the rice cooks, mix the egg yolks and sugar; When the rice is done, turn off the heat. Do not drain it. Add a couple of spoons full of the hot milk to the egg and sugar mix to gently bring up its temperature, and then add it to the rice. Turn the heat back on and cook until the custard thickens a bit. Pour it into whatever you want to serve it in and decorate with powdered cinnamon. You don't have to make any drawings or patterns with the cinnamon but it's more fun if you do! Enjoy!

    We use parallel stitching similar to what you did at 2:26 for tailored coats and jackets, usually with a layer of a “moulding fabric” like horse hair, and thick wool. By angling it as we go, we not only strengthen the layers but we also can shape it into most curves. No boning needed as it is comfortable and soft, but bounces back. It’s such hard work and nobody ever sees it 😢 Sometimes I wonder how many secrets can be hidden between the layers of a piece of clothing. Surely at some point someone has left a little gift (or a little curse 😂) inside of them. I loved your cartridge pleats! They came out perfect. And the rich dark green fabric was perfect for them. The whole outfit looks amazing so far!

    • @sara-varela
      @sara-varela 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for your comment! I had the idea of those moulding fabrics being used in tailoring but I thought it would be something more complicated and technical than just parallel rows of stitches. And hiding little secrets between the layers of fabric sounds like a really fun idea. Almost like a wearable time capsule.

    • @Aliandry
      @Aliandry 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sara-varela Different patterns produce different shapes, but the basic idea is there already with parallel stitching. If you wanted, for example, to make a little bit of space for a larger chest without adding more fabric, you could stitch several parallel rows in a V shape, with the bottom of the V being the bottom front of the chest piece. This would cause the fabric to try and bow outwards, making it more comfortable for a larger chest. I sometimes think about embroidering a particular shape or adding an interesting lining to a piece of clothing, but there are always time and money constraints. Doing things by hand is already hard labour, and doing something extra can be really taxing in the long run. It's still a lovely idea.
