    I've been dwindling off watching electronics on TH-cam because 90% of the content is watered down, they skip over the in-depth build process, the challenges and solutions along the way, like you said, the iterative process. This video is the perfect mix between technical depth, the journey of problem solving, awesome factor, and entertainment. By far the best DIY electronics video I have came across in a very long time. Top work Cam!!

    Your are right focus on cable management and the foam underside and it will be so cool!

    • @camshand
      @camshand  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yes, I spent some time this morning at least getting cables off the floor. But I want to unplug everything now that the tech is in and make clean runs to ensure minimal interference for audio cables.
      Haha yeah the corflute needs a long edge for the front. I'm thinking of getting a 2.2meter piece of metal that can act as a straight edge and screw over the bottom front, making it all seamless.
      Always more to explore and refine!

    MAAAAAATTTEEEEEE!!!!! So bloody stoked to see this all come together! Got those chills with you.
    Good luck w/ the cable management, with the amount of tech you're cramming in it's worth looking into some form of cable labelling. My desk is a dual display PC and Macbook setup run through a HDMI/USB switch (via thunderbolt dock) and the takeaways from a tonne of cable management iterations over the years due to component failures and moves would be;
    - Draw and maintain a labelled wiring diagram, both intended design and "as built" once done.
    - Label each cable at Source, Output and mid-run. Especially important if you end up using more than one plane (X/Y/Z)
    - So you can hotswap cables ideally have each managed seperately. If not, then manage groups applying "seperation of concerns"
    - In an ideal world I'd find a way to use "junctions" to seperate "zones" and run appropriate length cables between. The idea being that if I wanted to swap my monitor cable I just have to swap the cable from [[ Monitor Desktop Junction ]] rather than having to remove the entire cable run back to the PC. This would have been invaluable when the DisplayPorts on my GPU went and I had to swap to the HDMI and USB C outputs.
    - To minimise wear and tear from bumps and day-to-day vibrations on ports/connections, fix and secure as close to the port as practical.
    Love your stuff man and pumped for what else you dream up.

    • @camshand
      @camshand  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Man those chills are like nothing else 🤩
      Awesome tips, thank you! I for sure should add some labels, at least to the lighting and speakers which have specific sides.
      A diagram is a good idea, I've done it in the past on my previous cable management video a few years ago as it just got confusing even sorting out powerboard loads.
      Great idea with a junction box,, even running a switcher for my monitor would be handy as oh how I hate trying to reach behind it!
      Looking forward to sharing the custom PC build with you next 😁🤙

    This would be my dream project if I owned a laser cutter and had any confidence in soldering. I would love to make a highly customized solution like this. Maybe someday...
    Never had any formal training with CAD software, but as a graphic designer I have plenty of experience with Illustrator, so I use practically the same method for designing complex 3D printed mounts. I recreate my precise bits in illustrator then import that SVG into TinkerCAD and kit bash everything together.

    For straighter grinds with the rotary tool, you could use a clamp to hold the tool in place at a right angle to the acrylic and then slide the acrylic against a straight edge so the grinding wheel stays on the path you want (you could even use lengths of your extruded aluminum as the straight edge). That way you eliminate any variance in your movements when grinding the acrylic.

    • @camshand
      @camshand  5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      That's a good idea, kind of like a router table, but for the rotary tool.
      I've since upgraded to a C02 laser at home so was able to do varied depth engraving.
      I can appreciate people with hands on tool skills, but using a robot is so much easier haha

    Bravo!! You really captured how it is to fit existing tech into a re-purpose or different enclosure. Back in the days before 3D printing I did a lot of this type of thing and have gained a lot of experience over the years, not always successful, but that's the incentive to improve (I bricked an $800 VST player once!) • @arstulex
    @arstulex 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Yeah, the Stream Deck is basically one large capacitive touch screen, and each button has capacitive rubber on the bottom (the material you find on the tip of those cheap phone styli). The Stream Deck knows which button you pressed based on the area of the screen that was 'touched'.
    It surprised me when I discovered that too, but in retrospect it makes so much more sense than engineering buttons that each have their own individual displays.
    It's actually quite genius. It's a pretty simple design that achieves a more complex appearing result.

    • @camshand
      @camshand  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes amazing design idea, and got me thinking about how you could also make custom dashboard displays by simply putting an acrylic or wood faceplate with holes cutout to view a TV behind it. So coool!

      YES YES YES! I like your thinking as this came to mind after the fact too.
      I didn't have the time/materials to run the amount of tests needed to perfect the depth of engraving, but I should soon. So thinking of re-doing the panel just to clean up that section.

      Thanks Leon! We all start somewhere, I try to break any project down into small chunks. This Series was a good example of that. Learning the frame and how to drill the mounts. One step at a time 🤙

    that turned out great! now that you have some more experience designing enclosures and brackets, maybe make a bezel for that touch screen in the middle! awesome work dude

    • @camshand
      @camshand  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      hahaha yeah the uneven bezels are quite bizarre! problem I realised with making an overlay would mean the screw mounts are no longer symmetrical to the edges of the screen.... it's a lose lose 😢

    I see a big problem with how you take images of things your trying to build off of. You are using a perspective camera where the camera takes in light at different angles. You want a orthographic camera (like one from a printer scanner) so you can take a flat linear image. If you do this then you can make super exact scans of objects.

    Beautiful work. Im just curios why you didnt just bridge the contacts on the standing desk control panel and replaced them with other button hardware. Were you afraid to break it?
    Its actually just a very simple circuit were the button just either closes the connection or keeps it open, if not pressed, all the processing happens on other parts of the board. I just did that on my standing desk and i love not having to use the mushy plastic buttons, but nice clicky metal ones. That way i also could add an additional button which controls all the power to the desk and is in the same design language.
    Plus: If I would ever need to change out the desk control, because you change the motor or legs of the desk, you could keep the buttons and just rewire them to the new control panel.

    • @camshand
      @camshand  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes great idea, and was what I initially planned, however I wanted to see the 7 segment display.
      I thought about also soldering to it and running a second one alongside buttons, but after seeing the hinge of the plastic I figured I'd give it a crack as a bit of a challenge/experiment.
      No doubt soldering new buttons would have been the easier option haha!
