Is GNCC Racing as Hard as They Say?

- In This Week in MXA, episode 166, presented by O'Neal, Josh Mosiman lines up for the 2024 Big Buck GNCC race in the Sportsman A 25+ class on the brand new 2024 Yamaha YZ450FX cross-country bike. Yamaha told Josh that he should race the 2-hour sportsman race first, before going into the deep end of GNCC racing and signing up for the XC1 450 Pro class. Josh has raced WORCS, NGPC, the 24-Hours of Glen Helen, SRA and other West Coast off-road events, but this was his first taste of GNCC racing. Two hours in the trees of Union, South Carolina, is no joke, and Josh found that out quickly.

Thanks for brining exposure to the gncc series. Two years ago i went to my first gncc at the John penton, and I’ve raced Moto my whole life, 30+A class… I haven’t raced a moto race since doing the penton. You get addicted to the suffering that comes with a gncc race and the atmosphere is like no other.
I always tell my buddy’s it’s miserable fun. Iv raced GNCCs for 10+ years and last year I found my way into 6 hard enduros, you want to talk about next level suffering those are the final boss. Running the whole east coast hard enduro series this year to continue the pain.
@@jaredfortner funny you mention hard enduro. We were down in Perry county Ohio and ran into to a few dudes who do hard enduro and spent the day riding with them, and we ended up doing the last hard enduro at little hocking.
@@YZFMX256I was at that race actually! We may have run into each other then. I made just over a lap and half in the pro class. Track was brutal once the rain hit.
@jaredfortner ....mad respect for hard enduro riders! I'm 63yo and that's definitely out of my wheelhouse now but pretty sure I would've sucked at that even in my younger years 😂
@@jaredfortner i ran B class and my buddy John kroll ended up winning it. As soon as the rain hit i quit😂 not my discipline when it comes to racing at all, i had no business being out there with that rain. I’ll be going back to wildwood this year to do a hard enduro as long as the weather is good, sucks both of their national events last year got pounded with rain.
more gncc content please. thanks for showing our sport
I think it's really cool that Yamaha incorporated a race into their bike launch. Props to them for it
Its funny. I work at Yoshimura and we just made Stu Baylor's KX450 prototype exhaust for his program. I was seeing last season pop off and sorta got into it. After designing the Kawi pipe Im definitely much more into GNCC now. its pretty cool that all these extra GNCC videos are popping up just as I am starting to get into it.
Good job MXA. yalls make me wanna race GNCC now
Quick question man, how did you get into doing exhaust work like that?
@@seanyc3734 Quick answer- Right place, right time. Long answer, i grew up with bmx, motorcycles, ATC's, fixing cars with my dad and really just trying to build stuff as much as i could. I got a degree at Cal Poly in mechanical engineering. These two passions combined with actually living close to Yoshi is what got me in. So in sense i created my own luck and took advantage when the opportunity was there.
Dont be afraid to reach for something new and scary. I know i was very nervous before i started here. things are going okay now =]
thanks for the question man!
Sorry man i thought i replied! in reality i got lucky. but i created that luck by getting my bachelors in mechanical engineering and was always doing my own motorcycle stuff on the side.@@seanyc3734 so in essence opportunity met preparation in the right way and i took advantage!!
Excellent video!!! Thanks for showing the other side of the sport. The first hit is always free. And judging by the smile, you're now addicted for life.
Super cool to see you out there Josh! The 3 hour is no joke, but would love to see you out there at one this year!
Are you from Ohio by chance? We have an oplinger from Ohio that’s fast. Vet class dude from northern Ohio
Huge Thank You to MXA for brining much love to GNCC. Maybe do a WORCS & /or GPin the future.
The sport (dirt biking) needs more exposure than just MX to help it grow.
Josh- you do just as good a job on these videos as you do racing!! 👍🏼
I'm loving the more off road content and off road bike reviews. If nothing else...it makes the channel more well rounded.
I’d love to see the raw chest cam footage, and you should definitely do some more GNCC and/or National Enduro stuff. 👊🏻
Man, that timing system is a dream! I've raced so many things in so many places, road racing, MX, flat track, velodrome bicycles, downhill skateboards, skis, snowboards, sail boats, you name it. I have NEVER seen a timing system that cool. Heck, most of the time it doesn't even work! I'm so impressed.
One of the more fun “West Coast guys GNCC Racing” videos.
Nice work, Josh, and impressive to see that you were able to keep up with Brandy and some of the pro women for a while.
As someone who’s raced hare scrambles and GP, your fellow racers and the fans are your first responders when you go down. Twice over the years I’ve seen racers and fans performing CPR on someone who’s gone down. You have to understand, getting medics out to an accident is difficult. One instant took about 20 minutes. Someone has to get to an emt which is usually back at the pits. Then you have to show them where the incident took place which usually requires going against the race direction. And in a lot of spots a UTV isn’t going to fit so you have to double them out there with their gear. It is NO JOKE. Learn basic cpr as a racer because you’ll be the first on the scene of an incident and it may save someone’s life. We love the fans not only for the support but you’re the ones that help us racers when we go down. Response time in the woods is nothing like response time on a MX/SX track. Be safe.
THAT was pretty darn neat. Never thought I'd see Off-Road from MXA. I switched from Moto to Hard Scramble/Enduro after a tib/fib 1990. Good people-great times. Now do an Enduro on some virgin singletrack👍👍
Please spare the quad footage next time!👎
Loved to see you out there! Always cool so see someone so eager to learn the sport and give it a shot! You killed it!
The Baylor boys keep a little more energy storage on them. haha
Them boys are strong af. 😂
A woods guy my whole life. Love to bring guys in the woods and get em crying for their mama😢 gncc is open trail...come to P.A. or Jersey Pinebarrens. you'll get your sleeves torn off your arms..! Many can't deal with it..
Absolutely enjoyed your ride Josh. I've only done Moto during my 6 decades however you may have just peaked my interest in doin a lil woods riding. What a great event. Nice riding my friend. Looking forward to the next one ✌️😉
Awesome video!!
GNCC Looks so fun!
Impressed that you did so well your first time👍👍👍
Love the GNCC content!!
The guy that you're talking about at the end was my good friend and riding buddy since high school. He has rods from L1-L5, a rod in femur, another rod in his lower leg & ankle, 2 plates on his pelvis, and is having trouble eating and also requires several more surgeries.
This was awesome to watch. I've experienced all of that including the "back pain" 😅 thanks for hitting up the gncc and great ride Josh.
Amazing video. Right up my valley bro ❤
Awesome video.....more of this and national enduro, please!
This was a lot of fun to watch. Would love to see more GNCC content in the future!
Absolutely loved every second of this video. Great job, Josh. That start was epic!!!!!!!!!
So many genuinely nice people. Josh did a great job in the race and you guys are killing it recently with video content - it's not olny bike tests but there is a story to is. Thank you for great content.
Way to go Josh. Thanks for bringing us along.
This is my favorite type of content.
MXA showing quads. Cool.
I always love the stories from everyone after a race day like this. "I almost hit a tree then I had to dodge a dude that was stuck on that hill" lol some of the best times you can have on a bike is offroad racing. Just go to ride, forget racing it's fun.
Very smooth rider. You looked like you weren't even trying. Thats a good thing.
Nice! I love the diversity of your work lately. If you want to ride the Florida baby brother of the GNCC, I have a 350 in the garage.
This was a great post! Thanks for giving us off-roaders some love!
Awesome video! Glad to see GNCC getting the exposure. I encourage everyone to see just how hard they can be. And shout out to Corey I remember watching him and his brother Tyler racing husky’s at the NCHSA and Mideast races. Keep up the content!
My son has been racing the GNCC on and off since minis now A 4stroke lites and only a handful of the races! We’re from New England so it’s hard to make all the rounds!! Now you need to do the 3 hour race and I guarantee that you’ll have a new respect for the XC1 and XC2 and 3 classes and if you can run with Johnny G or the Baylor boys you will have impressed me and a lot of people!!!
Awesome video, good coverage for GNCC, always a good day! Nice ride, Josh
Let’s see other athletes from other sports hold the heart rate that the Pro GNCC racer do for 2-3 hours.
Awesome seeing this exposure for GNCC and just XC racing as a whole! 🤙
You can't judge by the morning race that extra hour is the test.
During covid the rules were relaxed and I raced NETRA 1 HR 30MIN sports man A/B in the am got second then B vet 2 hr moto in the afternoon to a 3rd
Proud of that accomplishment and it was hot as hell
Normally they don't let you do that so people don't do one lap in am pull off and have an advantage for the second race. I will admitt it was an advantage off the start with the dust knowing the trail. I was leading until last lap and I fell apart was so tired I barely hung on to 3rd
GNCC is awesome, probably the most fun race for any skill level. Funny when you race the sportsman class and think you are fast, then you see how fast the XC1 guys are!! Best race I have ever done has to be St Clairesville!
That hill is gnarly as all heck....i was at the bottom when you went thru
Nice billy bolt hat there at 8:49 🇬🇧
Man Cameron Sisk is the guy who beat you and he is a local guy who rides with us and can absolutely fly on a dirtbike. You did great for your first time. Definitely try the 3 hour
Sweet GNCC content! Hope to see a big crowd at the Hoosier this year!
This was awesome!
looks like a good course. so often the xc races where i am are short lapped (
What an awesome start!!! And just overall an awesome race! Super cool seeing a moto guy out there trying his hand at some off road racing. I am a desert guy but I love to go hit a local moto race every once in a while
GNCC is wild! So much fun though. Completely gassed after these races.
Awesome start!!! Good ridin ole boy!!!
Great video. But if you really want a butt hurtin', come to round 2 at Hog Waller in FL! The sand whoops will absolutely KILL you!!!
That was awesome! Gncc is on my bucket list.
Cool seeing a moto guy give offroad a try.
This is great!
As an Ole CR 500 A Open rider, Race Sunday. Get the real experience!
Havent seen James for a long time, such a nice guy, still the best pics of me racing where his pictures.
Need to do the 3 hour to see how gnarly it really is cause the PM race is wayyyy tougher than the AM race
Man, this brings back ancient memories!
Hey were you letting the camera hang loose, relying on it's stabilization to keep to get a good picture?
Cool as all heck MXA is at a GNCC. Also sweet you that you rapped with all the other bike magazine editors.
Jday off-road seem right up joshes alley!! 1/2 woods 1/2 moto
You should have interviewed some women racers
Wow killed it off the line for your first dead engine start race!!! IMPRESSIVE
Siiiick!! GNCC is definitely the business...
Excellent ride Josh.....just as we expected!!
Good times! Great show!
Impressive.
Insane start dude!
Trevor.. U always kill your edits 🔥🔥✌️
Great coverage. Keep them coming.
This is sick , let’s be honest off road is way more fun
The video is good and I like watching it 👍
Bold move going with just the mud guards instead of actual bark busters! 😅
This isn’t motocross…..I’m telling Jody!!
Badass! Great video … bring me next time!!!
Great video, Impressive ride, still 3 girls ahead of him. Those gals must be bad ass
heck yeah mosey!!!!
I started woods racing in the last year. What dudes are doing in the woods is absolutely nuts, but its not spectator friendly
So Awesome!!
November 4, 2024. Stanton, AL. Come ride a national enduro on some of the most primo single track in the country.
Excellent video!
Impressive Josh way to show how a Moto dude can ride a GNCC!!👍👍
I did my first one and it's so fun but damn it's hard
As an quad racer I’ve always thought dirt bikes looked more physically demanding but I guess it’s backwards with you guys😂👍🏼
Epic video!
that was fkn cool ,Josh
well done!......completely different kinda riding
450 for 3hrs would be brutal......350 would be perfect bike maybe
seen earlier Kalub Russell videos nd incredible how fast they can go thru them trees
Great stuff....
I think you race another gncc. Off-road racing is awesome.
You looked solid out there.
Cool video!
Josh, what is that camera you're wearing on your chest? I have NEVER seen video quality like that when the camera is getting bounced around!! Awesome video, dude!!
With the Yamaha. Just pull the cold start. Since it switches off with the throttle.
So gnarly! 💪
In a way, this is just bringing home what Motocross originally was ~100 years ago. The name motocross came from two words, motocross crosscountry.
Out of everything quads are the least fun to ride after you become decently skilled in overall riding .
You need to do snowshoe. If you want to test yourself. I raced the first one there. Back when David knight was still racing.
AWESOME video!!!
Yea lovin the off-road content keep at it!
loved this video
Time to go to Spain or Portugal and try an Enduro GP
