Hi Tara, I don’t know if you can get them in the states, but we use Mastercard cash passports, which we can either pre-load, or just load it as needed while you’re away, with whatever currency you want. They are great, it means you can get cash out at atm machines, without obscene bank charges. If you don’t use it, just take it back out once you’re home.

Banks aren't so geared up for international travelling in the US nor the staff particularly knowledgeable about travel products even if the bank offers them in my experience from living there. Also most ATMs in the US which are outside you Bank's charge high fees per cash withdrawal. From memory the cash passports you could get foreign exchange places like you get at airports, but even then I think due some coding differences in the North American banking system opposed of the other part of world I still think the can be issue with recognising pin numbers with various ATMs.

Any of the Visa or Mastercard reloadable debit travel cards are good, as you can loaded them is NZ$ and A$ if traveling onto Australia.

Even the post office does travel money cards ( in Australia, I'm sure in NZ too). I've found them to be super useful when I don't want to carry wads of cash, or pay exchange rates and I can swap around the currencyas I wish on the go with no additional fees. I have used them with ease in all sorts of obscure places of the world. But yes had trouble using them in Canada and the US. You can be in the middle of the Kalahari in a tinshed, or way up a mountain path in the Urals and have no trouble using eftpos, or pin transactions, but woah is you if you try to use it in Chicago, they look at you like you are a con artist!

Good advice re #4... which I would have expressed as simply, don't go around bragging... about anything. Do not tell people how expensive anything you own is, or how much you earn. No one will be impressed. You will be seen as very "full of yourself"/superior at best... although I have found that Americans in particular often don't realise they are coming across in this way. I think it comes from most Kiwis never wanting anyone to feel awkward or embarrassed around them... so it's seen as in bad taste to talk about all your achievements or how well off you are to strangers, when you have no idea what their situation in life is.

    100% agree with No 1.
I would argue that negativity is in fact the number one reason why migrants to, or from, anywhere struggle to settle into their new country.
If you chose to move, you did it for a reason that included wanting to leave where you were.
Remember that and life will be a whole lot sweeter!
From a fellow immigrant ( pom to Aus)

I recommend Mastercards CashPassport to international travellers of all kinds, it's got some annoying fees but the convenience makes it worth it. Also, I know you have a lot of Kiwi viewers cause we are all obsessed with ourselves - maybe you could do some general tips and tricks for Kiwis planning to go to the states even if it's just tailored to your neck of the woods. Throwback to being fully aware of American toilets but still having a near heart attack the first time I flushed one lol but for real it's a steep learning curve aye.

      Going to the States?
We had planned to visit an old friend in Arizona... but the last 5 years has just highlighted the differences between us and them.
And 74m voted again for Drumph! That confirmed my reservations.
It wouldn’t be an enjoyable visit if you couldn’t speak freely; if you had to look over your shoulder all the time.
Offending someone can be a life threatening experience.
What a shame for decent Americans but any desire to travel there has gone.
Hopefully, our friends will visit us here.

It depends on what you are bringing in food wise. I have brought heaps of food in bot sealed packages and opened packages and had none of it taken off me. As long as you declare everything you will be fine. If you dont declare and are searched thats when the trouble starts.

Unprocessed food usually is hard to get through customs, particularly meat products, dairy, seed and nuts plus fruit or vegetables. For instance the reason why Tara's French cheese friend ran into problems was that France doesn't require pasteurised milk to be used to make cheese and its a chance TB could be transmitted into the country due this. Homemade foods, even one in sealed packs also are unlikely to get through as there's no way to verify it been cooked enough to eliminate potential pathogens from being imported with it.

The open minded thing is a good first tip. I watched another YT channel awhile back and all this young woman did was grizzle about all the things she had in the US wasn't everywhere else. I think she expected Australia to be America with kangaroos and koalas.

Most European countries use 230 including the UK (though it weirdly not complete across the whole country) or 220 volt. The only thing is some 230 volt appliances have enough tolerance designed within them they can cope with 240 supply. I wouldn't use a device though that heats up or operates at variable speed.

That’s fantastic. I think especially as Americans we need to remember this . So many Americans don’t travel much so they don’t get outside their own box much. Rarely do we experience a truly different culture so it’s hard for us to even know we are doing those thing. Great video

I have the converter on the kitchen bench because we brought over a $7000. USA coffee maker. We had brought the coffee maker 1 year ago before returning home. I also brought over a kitchen whizz. Didn't think about the power suitation. We have a sleep number bed which i totally love. So we use a converter for that. Made the mistake of bringing a vacuum cleaner. We had it for 9 months. Mom blew it up apparently. Not sure what she did to it. Wished we didnt bring it over. Mom went to a appliances shop and asked what is deal of the day for a vacumn cleaner. The man showed her a $700. For $100. Good buy!!! Works great. Yes I can get bags still for it. My hubby moved back faster than I'd liked to have moved so we only had one day for a yard sale. I regret not bringing our big tent from kmart. 2 bedroom with 2 big doors and netting to keep out flies and it had windows. I regret not bringing over our deck chairs that had high backs from home depo.

Tara. Fantastic information. You do such a great job, oh how true, come with an open mind and see, enjoy and learn about this fantastic country.. Not sure if this is relevant any longer, been 3 years since I have been back to visit family . But if Americans come here and want to use their Credit Cards, they will need to arrange a PIN if they have not already. That frustrating difference between the USA and NZ with Credit Cards, USA Signs, NZ PIN. Keep up the excellent work, you are a great example of the GOOD Americans that do exist.

To add: Be aware that if you are travelling with a debit or credit card that some (especially small towns) shops dont allow you to use the credit button and most if not all international debit or credit cards require that you use the credit button. so a trip to the bank for cash was the only option if you wanted to buy something. Seriously annoying

Kia Ora Tara, where are you residing in NZ? Our daughter resides in Christchurch, Canterbury. We are considering relocating from Arizona to CC, and our daughter recommended your channel. We have been to NZ three times. Of course that has been halted due to Covid, and we plan to resume traveling soon. We have been to most of South Island, as well as Auckland, Welly, and many of the usual tourists areas in the North. My wife and I are in our early 70s and in good health.
