If I'm right, and I believe I am, this is a song from a son dying of AIDS to his estranged father who surprised him by showing up in time to see him before he died. One of Sir Elton's most beautiful songs.
This was a unique song because not only is it in part about Elton John's relationship with his father but inspired as well by the death of Elton's friend Freddie Mercury.
Wow! Ty,I'm just really chuffed right now. Thank you so much for playing my request. Sir Elton/Bernie Taupin certainly write some beautiful, thought provoking songs.Have a good night and be safe!
Not just father and son, but it could be between family members, family and friends, between friends. And although it was released during the HIV/AIDS epidemic of the 90s (whew! almost 30 yrs ago!), it could also apply today about someone dying of Covid-19.
This period of time was the height of the aids epidemic when many religious people believed that aids was sent by God to punish gay people. Many disowned there children for being gay and many died alone because of this ignorance. The power of this song is "I can't believe you love me, I never thought you’d come”. Love always wins.
I am a Christian, and AIDS is the consequence of actions, not a punishment from God; my Lord would not have a father hate his child, any more than He hates us. I always lose it when I hear this song.
I so love this song. I remember when it was first released, back in 1992. I had just graduated from High School at the time. And although I'm not known for getting emotional very often, I remember bawling like a baby when I heard *"The Last Song",* by Sir Elton John.
Elton John & Bernie Taupin had written a different song about the AIDS crisis, called "Love Is Worth Waiting For," that Elton previewed in concert but it was never released. This song is so much more powerful. I'm sure the difference was Elton's friendship with the late Ryan White, a hemophiliac American teenager who fought to be re-admitted to school after he was diagnosed with AIDS. LIWWF was written in 1988. This song appears on the album The One which was 1992. Ryan passed in 1990. Elton donated proceeds from this song to the Ryan White Foundation. Was hard to listen to this tonight reflecting on a loss.
Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics for most of Elton's songs. My favorite Elton John songs never made the radio. Indian Sunset to me is the best song ever written about how the native americans were treated. Great story using music. Have Mercy on the Criminal, Burn Down the Mission, Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters, Come Down in Time, Country Comfort.
The living years by Mike and the Mechanics had the same theme..... Someone has to make the first move and if it's rejected, then you have at least tried. Your conscience is clear
I'm so teared up right now. What a beautiful song. And everything you said touched my heart and soul. It's Easter Sunday today even though this is 2 years after you did this reaction. But Jesus works in mysterious ways in our lives. Can't help but think of him and the father. Anyway. Hopefully that makes sense. So so emotional. Yes we need to communicate with those we love and forgive and allow healing. ❤️ 😇🙏🏻💞
You should watch the video of this song. The father rejected his son because he was Gay- now he’s in Hospital dying of AIDS..the son looks at his father, father looks at son and there’s reconciliation between them before the son died. Shows how people should show their love before it’s too late. 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔
This songs is played at the end of the movie And The Band Played On about AIDS. Very powerful song about a young gay man dying from AIDS and how his father comes to see him. My own son is gay and I couldn't imagine any LGBTQ person not having the support of their family. Sadly, it still happens. The official music video makes me cry every time I see it.....
The song is for the boy that died of HIV from a transfusion. The school and the world turned against the boy who held his head high and rose above it all.
This was written to bring awareness to separation of father and son due to sexual preference and AIDS. CANNOT LISTEN WITHOUT TEARS! Dual meaning: Bio-Father/Holy Father.
Its so well written. You wonder through the song who is visiting this man dying of AIDS. Is it a friend or an old lover, who? You have to wait clear until the end of the first chorus to hear that its his father. I really wish that the person hadn't spoiled the payoff,so it could hit you properly.
Love Elton thanks! If can would u play the mills brothers singing cielto Lindo from the 1930’s hits. My mother who will b eighty in august loved them so much. The used their hands & voices to mimic the sounds of musical instruments although one of the brothers played guitar. When u can work this in would b much appreciated🙏🙏God bless you
This song was done to support Elton’s AIDS Foundation, depicts a father coming to terms with his son being gay, and closes the incredible movie, “And The Band Played On” which is about the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, its lightening spread, and the millions of lives lost. The song is a tribute to those affected and died. The movie can be streamed free on You Tube and I highly recommend it.
Please do the Elton John song called INDIAN SUNSET from the same concert Greek Theatre 1994. It's a song about how the Native Americans were treated by the White Europeans. It's a very deep & moving song. Thank you!
Great review awesome song. If you get time to check out another father/son song that can tug every emotional string Andrea and Mateo Bocelli “Fall on Me”
Hello MRM, I love Elton John. Period. I tried sending you an email, and I will. But right now I'm just learning to turn my phone off and on. 🙃 I'm going to contract Patreon next and them my info. I may even get in time for a song request in June. Hey, it's possible.! Rock on MRM
@@Modern-Renaissance-Man tried sending you an email and it wouldn't go through. If you/when you get time would you send me one??? From there I understand how to just add you to my contacts. The phone I now have is more secure but also more complicated. I really get frustrated with myself but I'm me. What else can I say. My email address: beardenkaren4@gmail.com. I will contact you later. I'm very grateful for any assistance. 🙃
Elton mentions about releasing the hidden truth. About the fear the has overcome the son. The hidden truth is that the son has AIDS, and he is dying from it, and the father is having a difficult time accepting it. Parents, no matter what it is that your child is dealing with, they are your child. Always.
alot of people dont know that this song is about aids and what impact aids has on the world when how alot of people including celebrities died bcause of this disease and aids is still going on even through covid and coronavirus
I feel as if he is talking about my wacky family, who can hold grudges for years. Awesome song although next time people may have to put a warning on it like a 1 tissue box for mildly emotional 2 for heart breaking......😥
God I love Elton. He was brilliant live! This is a super touching song, & beautiful. Not my fave from him, as his collection is massive, but he really doesnt have a bad song IMO 🙂🖤🎹

You are right and the song was featured at the end of the HBO film about the AIDS crisis, "And the Band Played On."
This was a unique song because not only is it in part about Elton John's relationship with his father but inspired as well by the death of Elton's friend Freddie Mercury.
You are correct- this song makes me cry every time. It’s so deep and so sweet
You’re absolutely right
DUH.
Well, this one never fails: makes me cry like a baby...
Awww 😭💝💝
I just "happened to be" cutting onions.
Moi pareillement 😢
Saddest and most powerful song I ever heard. It's about a father losing his son to AIDS.
Yes! From the perspective of the dying son. So moving.
Excellent live performances always.Elton John delivered short, but beautiful and powerful song.
My absolute favorite song by him, ever. You are the only person to have a react to this on all of TH-cam!! WTF.
Wow! Ty,I'm just really chuffed right now. Thank you so much for playing my request. Sir Elton/Bernie Taupin certainly write some beautiful, thought provoking songs.Have a good night and be safe!
No problem!
Love this song…..so moving
This song leaves tears in my eyes every time.
Outstanding song 💝💝💝 I love songs that have deeper meaning.

Mercury died just before this song, liveable medication was on its way to treat aids but he just ran out of time😢
A very powerful song. It's even more powerful when you see the video of it.
The man can just slay a piano.

Nice song,i love the piano
Uhm, the song was about a father reconciling with his son who is dying or AIDS related illness. Not just any relationship. It's about the pandemic
Revisit 10-29-24
I almost forgot how powerful this performance was.
Peace!

I don't think Elton has ever made a bad song.
also its the first song he wrote after going into treatment and getting clean and sober....

❤️
This was written about a gay man dying from AIDs and his fathers acceptance of him. Elton is one of the biggest fund raisers for AIDS research
Devastatingly poignant.
Ok, I really need to change my profile name. That's just way too uncomfortable. I just realized...
the aides song
The regular, non-live version is far better.
