    No wonder Van is in such a good "mood" during this interview, the questions are intelligent and up to date at that time and not just another question about Astral Weeks or Moondance like that's the only 2 albums and songs that were any good of the Vanster. Finally an interviewer or interviewers that stimulate his intellect and not some dweeb pop star music biz interviewer. Van the Man!

      arfer Are there any other stories of “good encounters” with Van? I only hear stories about him being very “prickly” and unfriendly. But there are a couple interviews, like this one, where he seems down to earth.

      I stayed behind after a show once and went to front stage where a few of his musicians still were. The bass player asked me what i wanted. I said is van there? He said why? I saw i fancied a chat. He said hang on and left the stage a couple of minutes later he came back said sorry hes gone. I said really? He said yes and he always will be! God knows what i was going to say to him. Will that do? 😀

    After having read about and listened to his music and many interviews, the thing that I often find really comforting is Van’s profound intelligence and sense of humor. I have heard of his grumpiness and don’t doubt we all have this trait. What I admire most about Van’s attitude is his lack of pretense, his humility and his matter of fact approach to making music not only a quest but a lifetime vocation. His need to “wail” vocally is his response to the threshold, to sing out into the void. In that void is all the magic of past experience. He faces it by delivering astonishing poetry filled with melody and soul.

Looking at the comments below I realise what a privilege it was to have been there - and also how lucky to have been able to go see Van so regularly at this stage in his career when he was still releasing great albums like Sense of Wonder, No Guru, No Method, No Teacher and of course Irish Heartbeat with Derek Bell and the Chieftains and his extraordinary voice was still so immense.

    It was my California Russian Jewish wife that turned me, a Born Scotsman, onto the beauty of Van Morrison when we lived in San Francisco, as she was more aware of the beauty of Celtic music than I was. I was 32 then in the mid 1980s. I am 100% Celt but she did not have a single drop of Celtic blood in her, but her heart and soul most certainly did.

Fond memories of a "Deep Depression" Tour of Belfast with Mr Lynch in his car the winter after this gig (looking for a stone chair in Ballymacarrett). I've always felt this version of In the Garden is breathtaking, a sweetness in his voice throughout this entire appearance. You can always tell a late 80's recording from later periods, his voice is so explosive as he casts his head back hitting the highest note of his register . He lost this soon after the 91' "Pagan Streams" period, which is when I first noticed him not able to carry notes for as long as he once did. Like an Opera tenor hitting the top "C", for Van holding that higher note was his trademark. Its nice to have so much video to relive those moments.

      Frank Gappa Very true. His most wonderful voice started to go in the early 90's........people may say they liked his voice after that, but he couldn't do the kind of wailing in the whole scale that he used to do.

    I love the way the interview ends. Maybe I'm misinterpreting the song lyrics or stating the obvious, but to me what Van is saying in the song In The Garden, is getting back to the Garden before the fall of Adam. I also think back to Father Abraham whose faith in God was enough. Of course isn't this why Christ was crucified and rose again, to bring us all back to this state of in the Garden or having the faith of Abraham being enough?

    My father came from Van’s neighbourhood in Belfast. Dad immigrated to Canada and lost most of his Belfast accent like Van. Every now again you could and can hear in both a little lint of it. So clear and clean. They speak so the rest of us can understand their poetic voices.♥️

      ***** This how he is with non-journalists!

    • @pipeandslippersman
      @pipeandslippersman 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      arfer yeah. i think he just sees those people (journalists) as intrusive. his profession has enough crap to deal with already before he can actually get to the bit that he wants to do ... he'll suffer the travelling, the mental and physical dislocation, lust for product and profit from his 'handlers': all of that he's stoic about now. journalists and the rest of the media in general he just doesn't get! as he mentions here - he was a PROFESSIONAL MUSICIAN before all that. but, you get him in a room with a couple of guys he respects, who have done their own research and become known from it - he's going to react positively. in a funny way, he's like zappa. he broke through at a time when the music industry was caught on the hop by a new thing and was putting out anything they thought would sell! and through sheer originality, hard work and bloody-mindedness, he stayed in the biz. pretty much on his own terms. for that alone you've got to applaud The Man.

      Are there any stories of “good encounters” with Van? I’ve only heard stories about him being “prickly” and unfriendly. I’ve even wondered if maybe he has some mild form of autism, where he doesn’t really know how to interact with people ... which would make him seem very unfriendly.

    • @pipeandslippersman
      @pipeandslippersman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@CipherSerpico autism? no. i work with autistic people and The Man ain't that. just shy. preoccupied. and, as i say, a bit sick of that part of the industry. i can also furnish you with a good encounter: without going into too many details - i got into his dressing room immediately after a gig and gushed all over him! he could of hardly been in the mood, but he just laughed at me and handed me a can of stella! i was gently led away by his bass player of the time (brian odgers) and the security guys dealt with me...
