Favorite Parts: 1) Cyndi Lauper's solo - nailed it. She thought every artist was laughing at her voice during rehearsal, but it was her bracelets that were making the feedback noise. She said she felt under-dressed, but ended up doing amazing! 2) Huey Lewis getting nervous amongst his peers because he was not initially scheduled to sing a solo. But he was asked spur of the moment to fill in for Prince. He was amazing and did a fabulous job with his 3-part harmony. 3) Bob Dylan struggling with his solo, but Stevie Wonder helped him out, playing on the piano and taking the time to rehearse with Bob at 4 in the morning. 4) Bruce Springsteen with his cheerleading voice bringing this song to another level. 5) Dionne Warwick - Her voice is just amazing on this track. She stands out for just one single line of singing. 6) Michael Jackson - He co-wrote this with Lionel. Michael dedicated his heart into this song. He didn't even show up for the AMAs that night so he could be at the studio preparing. 7) Lionel Richie - He was the glue. He is the most underrated artist and deserves more credit. He helped bring everyone together, which is not easy. 8) And last but not least, Quincy Jones for orchestrating this magnificent ball of energy into something great for humanity. This songs still plays well today in 2024.
I’ve probably watched this 300 times, no idea. It never gets old for me! THIS could never happen today. We wouldn’t be able to get this many FABULOUS singers (IMO) and they would never do it for free. Prove me wrong world and I will take back my words.
@@uglyDIY You mean besides the ones here who are still alive! This is the group of people who define American music. When people think of American music, 7/10 times you’re going to think of this era. 2/10 times it will be before this era, and just 1/10 times it will be from the mid 90s onwards.
I just watch this on Netflix it's been 39 years ago it took me back to that little first grader and looking at seeing how many are no longer with us. Always been beautiful .
@tarrakis Cyndi, Kim Carnes, and Huey Lewis did several takes improvising harmonies together at the request of Lionel Richie. One thing that held them up is that the people recording kept hearing a clanking sound concurrent with Cyndi's part. Turned out to be her jewelry! In true 80's fashion, she had maybe 10 necklaces, 20 bracelets and long dangle earrings. Everyone laughed, including Cyndi, when they realized the source of the problem. The subsequent take was the iconic bridge we know today!
@@appletree6898 Cyndi initially thought all the artists were laughing at her voice. I could tell she was a little sad. But once she realized that it was her bracelets that they were laughing at (and the beautiful microphone), then she let loose with her amazing voice and this is what we got. Cyndi truly showed up even though her boyfriend told her not to go because the song wasn't going to be a hit. Much respect for Cyndi Lauper after watching the documentary.
The making of this song was truly MAGICAL! So many stars here I grew up with and loved, their combined talent here will never be matched. It breaks the heart to see so many of these artists have passed on. I really noticed the beauty in Michael Jackson's voice, a true Superstar. Kenny Rogers and Tina Turner look so young here, it was 1985 afterall; the 80's really was the very best era for music. R.I.P. to all those who have left us for a better life, you are truly missed!!! My comment made in February, 2024.
Steve Perry with such a perfect and unique voice, the harmonizing between Paul Simon and Kenny Rogers, Kenny Loggins smooth voice, Michael’s parts, the power and emotion in Cyndi’s voice. Wow. Freaking goosebumps!!
I found it a bit hilarious in the documentary how in most of the shots from the studio he's this typical introvert at a party, just kind of hanging around and listening to others having conversations.
It's crazy how much talent we had back then compared to today. None of them touch this group of individuals. Man I miss my childhood. The best music imo

I don’t care what anyone says about this song. This was magical. People truly paid attention because of this music. Nothing like this will ever happen again, and that’s a sad fact. It was momentous then, and will ring true forever. So much talent in one place is amazing.
