In grade 12 music, for our playing exam, my music teacher told us we could play any song we wished, this is the track I did for my exam. I did not do anywhere as good as your cover. This is an amazing cover and I love the touch of the Steinberger. Thanks for showing us how it's played. Cheers
That's awesome! I also did Rush for my school music exams when I was a kid haha. I played Freewill with my friend on drums for our performance. Thanks for watching and sharing that story!
Oh man! After I got rid of my 4001 about 87 wanted a Steinberger so bad! They were like $1500 so I bought a Washburn copy, black headless. So much fun to play live, as I was always afraid to turn and hit the cymbal with the Rick, plus it was so top heavy. Your extra fills are awesome, just lime Geddy in the later years.
@@TheRealThomasPaine1776 thanks. Glad you liked it. Thats a lot of money for the 80s. They were much cheaper a few years ago when I got mine in about 2010. They are back up a bit now
I am a drummer and just dabbled at bass. It always amazed me how Geddy played so many parts and underlying tones of the songs and created so many different keyboard Sounds. Grace Under Pressure was my first Rush concert. Your performance was fantastic! Thank you for helping us see how the magic is done!
@@hemibass That was the best one. Signals was a repeat of Exit Stage Left. Even though Geddy had the coonskin hat hair lol on the others Alexes effects and tone were very thin.
I am so amazed you got the end so spot on! I think some of it is on the studio verson but its way down in the mix so I have always loved the GUP live one. Excellent job!
@drwheycooler8423 thanks! Yeah the bass isn't very high on grace under pressure. Always felt like it was a little bit in the background. Luckily on power windows they put it right back in the foreground! Thanks for watching
Awesome job dude, those keys sound identical to the original especially! Reach out if you want a track from this show with certain elements removed because I figured out how to do it perfectly with this and ESL specifically (depending on which parts we are talking about)
This instantly became my favorite Rush cover on TH-cam. Of course I know that Geddy Lee is a god among men, but until this video I never realized how busy and groovy this bass line is. Such a killer sound on your gear, too. You really let the bass shine in the spotlight the best way possible.
Great to see your new vid pop up in my notifications! Great job, as always! :) The bass alone is tight, but the synth is just that additional ingredient to bring the whole dish together. Rock on!
Thanks. They have gotten really expensive now but back when I got mine they really weren't crazy money. Maybe they will go back down to something more reasonable on the market soon!
Man....I LOVED IT!!! Glad you incorporated the keys too. Gives us insight into the subtle sounds! GUP Live is one of my favorite albums. I've worn through The Weapon track 100x over😂. Outstanding work!
@@CTTH100 Haha his channel is great too! I'm actually in a Rush tribute band already, will have some content coming out soon from us. I'm very excited about it!
Fantastic job! You nailed the sound as well as the playing on everything. I was wondering about the low end keyboard and why you just didn't split the keyboard but then I read your description and it all made sense. You have now inspired me to go back and play this one and try and nail it down.
Another great video, this type of content is awesome and inspiring. In fact, this channel is a big inspiration to get myself into bass guitar. I have a sire v3 second generation jazz style bass guitar, it’s awesome for a whole pile of genres. The only issue I have with it is it has fret buzz on some of the frets. I always thought that bass was a more easier version of guitar, since you don’t have to play chords. Later on, I realized you can do a lot more stuff on bass guitar, like pop and slap technique, Geddy Lee’s technique, finger style, etc. what an awesome channel!
Thanks so much! That's great to hear my channel makes you want to play bass. I was going to get a sire fretless a couple of years back but I chickened out because of money. Might still end up getting one. Thanks for watching and thanks for the lovely comment!

You should have had the bass in your hands when it was time to play the keyboards like Geddy always did but of course nobody even comes close to the talents of The Man Geddy Lee even though you do play bass and the keyboards very well
Thanks. My room isn't really setup to be able to record like that. I just don't have much space near my pc to have cameras and synths in position (whilst standing with my bass)! I play in my Rush tribute band as normal though, switching between bass and keys etc. Thanks for watching

@magicsinglez this one is standard tuning. If you mean how do I tune it because of the headless thing, it's some knobs on the bridge that you twist to tighten and loosen them. Thanks for watching!
I've thought about it. I might eventually get around to doing them but if I did I think I would try and charge for them somehow. It would be a lot of work for me!
Ged actually kind of ripped that bass part from Blue Oyster Cult's Don't Fear the Reaper (Rush toured with them a few times) but he sure played it better!
I have heard that song before but don't know it well. Would be interested to know if that's how this one started its life as a bass idea. Thanks for watching

Thanks! I know what you mean about the Steinberger. It's a sound I really like, but it will never top the big aggressive sound of a Fender Jazz. Yes I'm in a Rush tribute band! Hope to have some footage to share this year
Yeah you are not alone in that regard. Every time I use it I get very mixed feedback on the tone. They are interesting basses with quite a unique sound in my opinion but certainly not for everyone. Geddy got rid of them after a few tours and I've heard him say he doesn't really like them more recently. Glad you liked my play though thanks for watching :)
@@hemibassthe tone here is authentic for that period of Rush, so I'm cool with it. It's probably a major reason why Geddy's parts from these albums cut through the wall of synths so effectively.
@@mattmckeon1688 Yeah I also read that he had to play around with the tone a lot on the live Grace Under Pressure footage because he didn't like the Steinberger tone unedited. Would be interesting to hear what the original sound was like!
He recorded the Grace Under Pressure album with it (why he didn't use the Rickenbacker I've no idea) also played it on the tour and then also played it live during the following Power Windows tour despite recording that album with a Wal. Geddy said he liked the light weight and could move around the stage without accidentally knocking into a mic stand with the lack of a head stock. He mentioned in an interview only using it for the Grace Under Pressure era and not liking it much anymore but he clearly forgot that he kept using it for Power Windows live as well and also had it as his backup bass during the HYF and Presto tours if his Wal broke mid-concert. There's a TH-cam clip I saw awhile back with him playing a white Steinberger L2 on Closer To The Heart during the Presto tour. It's arguably the most rare least seen bass guitar he ever had in his collection
