I hear you, girl. I started my loc journey a few months ago for the simplicity, to be rid of the incessant products, and...I ain't gonna lie, Lisa Bonet's fly locs been tickling my fancy for a while now lol. I'm a hippie at heart and I wanted a set of my own. I hate salons so I wasn't about to commit to retwisting every few weeks with build-up promoting gel, only to risk future balding like I see on a LOT of my the loc'ed sistas where I live. Retwists don't last in my hair anyway even with gel, so it seemed pointless. The obsession with making sure every kinky hair is in place otherwise it's not "neat" or presentable is more mental slavery I'm not interested in. If other hair types can wear their hair loose and it not be looked down upon, then rock your afro locs or your frizzies. Faux locs are all the rage now, and the look they go for is a loose, unravelled locs style. Faux locs just imitate what locs naturally do, yet we call it messy and ugly on ourselves in its natural state. Time to stop the madness. Simplicity is the gold standard. Every black woman I know misses out on so many things because they're always fussing about their hair. Locs aren't supposed to be another thing to complicate our lives. Just live and love your beauty.
Love this Miaka!! Thank you. Even with locs, some people are still trying to achieve the European aesthetic of "smoothness" Let you hair do what it wants to do, and celebrate the absolute power and beauty of how the hair grows out of your scalp. Every other race does!!
Your crown is beautiful, and you’re preaching to the choir with your mindset... I’ve listened to several youtubers, and the trend I’m noticing (with the exception of Yannie and few others, you included) is a lot them ( women mainly) are on an aesthetic journey, nothing wrong with that but you’ll notice by the focus of their conversation whether or not your conversation resonates with them... the obsession with shrinkage/length as oppose to the health of their locs, and the “how can I control the frizz” amuses me, that’s like a swim student asking their instructor “how can I swim in water without getting wet” The very nature of locs is nonconformity... I’ve grown up around Rastas (the majority of them freeform); these conversations never come up and would sound silly to them... the other point is there’s a clear contradiction when youtubers profess to be all about that “natural life” and they’re face is beat down with enough makeup for an entire Broadway cast... make it make sense🧐 Thank you for this refreshing video💜✌🏾
I love this! I love Yannie too. I totally understand why she doesnt take new loc clients bc their concern w frizz is wild. Like do you know what youre doing? lol. I gotta pin this!
yea I never understood why people have such a problem with the frizz! everyones frizz is different and beautiful. it gives it character and just looks and IS so freeing. people are too conditioned fr
I originally wanted free form but still against my better judgment went to a loctician (paid over 200 dollars) to get my base done. I have 120 locs. 3 weeks in and do not want want to retwist. Didn’t want them this SMALL! So I May combine them, and just let them do their thing. I keep seeing videos about thinning and it’s discouraging. But this video really helped me solidify my feelings. I will not retwist, I will not buy all these products, I will embrace this journey and allow my hair to be free! Just like me! ❤❤❤
Yes it's better to combine them sooner than later when they have matured. Freeforming definitely gets better results on thicker locs. Good luck on your journey 💜
Thanks Lauren. I’ve been locked for almost 2 years and you’ve been my inspiration. I may have retwisted 3 times in my journey at the beginning! I am FREE of obsessing about my hair. I look after it by being mindful of what I eat and the water I consume. I wash once a week and haven’t used oils in about a year ( that ended my itchy scalp pronto)! I will separate once every couple of weeks cause I want my locs separated and that’s about the only maintenance I do.
@@deestrings8552 I now oil once every 1.5-2 weeks with a rosemary oil infused recipe I made myself. I tend to oil after I wash, and that's about it. Very little oil as my scalp is very sensitive. I found that my roots were thinning and needed a little nourishment. That's why I decided to oil. Everything is going well so far.
I'm one year in and your video has made me love my own locks even more. I need to appreciate and love the stage that I'm at. That said... I look forward to reaching your length
I don't know if you knew this but Hollywood required black women to cover their hair in films. This was a holdover from slavery times where enslaved women were required to keep their hair covered with scarves. Dorothy Dandridge was required to cover her hair in "white" movies she appeared in. African American women were not permitted to display their hair on camera unless they were in an all black cast movie. There, stars like Lena Horne, etc. were able to show their hair. The hair, obviously, still could not be in its natural state. The actress Rosalind Cash (RIP 🧡🙏) refused to straighten her hair for roles or wear a wig and lost many film and tv opportunities as a result. I completely agree with you. All women with African textured hair should stop trying to escape their natural hair. Even now, they are covering their hair with wigs and weaves and trying to do anything except embrace their natural selves.
I love your video, wisdom, and opinions!!! Loc that shit up, and go on bout your business!!! Thick, bushy roots. Full, frizzy locs. Just downright beautiful!!!
I just started my loc journey 2 months ago and I'm committed to semi freeform. I have already had to pop and separate. I'm loving the simplicity of it. Thank you for the video. 😊
You are one of the first who put me on to how dope semi free forms are vs manicured. Don’t get me wrong, both are beautiful, but I have a strong preference for thick locs and no retwisting. I won’t be going back to loose for a while, if ever! I agree with it being such a good fit for black women especially. It really brings out our natural beauty and I believe promotes inner peace! (Not saying you can’t have inner peace without locs lol…but it’s truly freeing to just let your hair BE and still look gorgeous)!
Your journey has been beautiful. I am thinking about this path for myself in the future. I have sisterlocks, and this is my second set of locks. The first set was micro-braid locks. I had 276 the first time, and with SLs I started with 550 apprx. I loved/love both journeys but I am coming up on 5 years sisterlocked, and I just want really low maintenance now? Like as in 4 reties a year max. I know I can't do that with sisterlocks so I'm starting to really think about combining, first because I don't want to start over with short locks. So idk. we gone see! Thanks for sharing.
Hiii Lauren! Glad to see you post! Your skin is sooo beautiful goodness! And you knowww the hair is popping. I am so grateful to be on this wash and go loc journey. One year on the journey no retwist, so glad to have inspiration from queens such as yourself. It keeps me motivated, growing and glowing. I don’t wear make up either and I love being in my natural state. What a freeing journey to be on! I loveee the freedom. Can’t wait to hear from you in the near! Stay blessed. P.s I love that, what would we do if we lived in nature, beautiful way to look at things
Loving the way u have decided to embrace your locs not twisting them. I had to start my locs over after approx 12 yrs because of thinning. Now about 1 yr and 6 months of starting all over again the thinning area is now full. I only palm rolled a few times at the beginning and now I'm semi free form and just separate my locs. I've decided I'll never twist my locs again too! 😅
Before I locked my hair I met a woman with grey and silver locs almost down to her calves. She has been locked for maybe 20 years and she had stopped re twisting her hair. I have gone as long as 3 months before I got nervous and retightened. It’s a goal to work to.
Thankss for sharing! I’m almost 2 years loc’d & I’ve semi free formed from the beginning (minimal retwists). I’m currently aiming to not retwist for an extended period of time. It’s been almost 3 months since my last retwist & I’m excited to see how long I can go without another one. My locs in the front of my head are much much thicker than the back so they don’t hold a retwist very well. They also loc pretty close to the root & it’s like I’m adding extra tension & forcing them to do something they don’t want to do when I retwist. To me, it seems like what’s the point of retwisting if you also can’t even tell from the front that the locs are twisted. I love my fluffy free roots & so when I do retwist my hair, I wash it out within a week so that I can get back to being able to play in my roots. During this second year, doing braidouts on unretwisted hair has been my favorite! It also helps me appreciate and see the difference in length & thickness once I leave my hair straight. Thanks for sharing Lauren! I just might join you on this journey of never retwisting again🤎🤎
How did i miss this comment?! lol. I agree retwists are only nice for about a week and then its pretty much out the window especially if your active and sweat. Right now braid outs are my thing too i like how they keep my roots seperated without leaving my hair flat to my head if that makes sense. Good luck i hope no retwist works out for you!
You are naturally beautiful and it’s even more beautiful that you’ve embraced that. Great video and I’m so with you on this subject. I’m a year and a half in and I’m down to only using shampoo, a water based leave-in, and rose water. And I might retwist every once in a while still only using those products. My locks are thriving and love low maintenance!
Hi Lauren beautiful locs. I am 3 years loc'd and I have been retwisting every month. My locs are pretty much no hassle and now I want to try to begin retwisting every three months. I have 120 locs and the problem I am having is I really don't want to have two hairstyles, an afro and loc'd ends. My last retwist was 12-27-22 and I am going to try not to retwist again until the end of March. I am hoping for the best. Continue to enjoy your journey. Great video.
Thank you! I do feel like it's best to do more regular retwist on skinnier locs. I've noticed they get more thinning depending on your texture and how long you wait. If the hair starts growing outside the loc or you have to do a lot of snapping to separate the roots I would go ahead and retwist. Listen to your locs!
I am sooo with you👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 question though, will our locs just “Loc” on their own without retwisting? I really don’t want them to do something crazy. I will continue to separate post washing but I am SICK of retwisting
I feel like it took a while but my locs do naturally loc at the root over time. Areas where my texture is softer still have some loose root but it doesn't bother me. As long as you keep them separated they should do fine!
I ask myself the same question “why isn’t every black woman wearing her hair in locs?” Some won’t like free form locs but there are other styles of locs- enough types of locs for everyone!

Thank you! My hair is a lot thinner in the front as well. I try not to do styles with to much tension but if I could go back I probably would have done larger parts around my hair line. Listen to your hair if you notice it getting thinner then semi freeforming might not be the best option.
