- I recently had some viewers comment that my method didn't work for them....This troubled me due to the absolute fact that I new my method was tried and true. So I purchased more ingredients from Pyro chemical source to see if there was a change in the ingredients.....There was no difference ....Viewers {you must purchase the exact ingredients} with no substitutes .....I have found that some powder and mesh will not work .....{note} it is a must to have {dry ammonia nitrate 34/0/0} or you will most certainly have no positive results.

I have done this many times over and it has always worked. Due to the meds I have to take, I get lots of the moisture control paks which I add to my powder bags to keep the ingredients dry.

Just made it home safely thank you for the idea it worked like a charm, thank you to the comment section for the added advice. Diaper method was used after I added the perch to AN, Mil AL 500 cheap and effective.

The fertilizer AN has a rather high moisture content. If you dry it out with some baked out epsom salt wrapped into a paper towel it will be better suited for this. Also crushing the prills to powder makes a much more sensitive version that doesnt need the chlorate at all just add aluminum powder and a little copper, iron, or lead oxide. It wont explode at all unless hit by a bullet or a fairly strong cap. Stuff into dip containers and tape to the bullseye.

Fellow viewers / I just found a new way to make a 22 sensitive target...FPSOutback makes a great 22 sensitive target....Looks very cool ...cant wait to try it...
This method works excellent, many times people purchase dark aluminum powder, basically aluminum flake coated with lump coal dust this keeps the aluminum flake from oxidizing fast enough, also just a hint, take your ammonium nitrate and run it thru a coffee grinder or ball and pestle, doing this will allow you to use less than half the ammonium nitrate and get the same results.

Sadly yes {they call it bomb making } But all it is/..... is a exploding rifle target. There is such a degree of bullshit I really don't even think they truly know why there is a problem other than the one they wont to create .
A caution if I may:
It is not recommended to mix chlorates or perchlorates with ammonium nitrate. Under the right conditions, ammonium chlorate/perchlorate can form which can spontaneously explode the whole mixture. (particularly the former, and if stored for a time) In the ten years I was involved with fireworks manufacture, I never came across any composition which involved ammonium nitrate for use in fireworks.
There is something that can be done when making a flash powder mix, and that is to add about 2% by weight of baking soda, especially if your composition contains any sulfur/sulfides. I am not sure if this would affect AN mixtures.
I'm not trying to throw a wet towel on anything, but to make it known there is a risk involved. Please be careful.
Also, in my reference material, a good flash powder mix has the same available energy as 20-30% nitro-based dynamite "by weight".(FYI)
Hey Kev, I have used your method and it works great. I tried a different aluminum powder and it is much stronger than the Bright aluminum powder. I tried using the German Blackhead 5413 H Super Aluminum Powder 3 Micron and it has alot bigger report when shot and it seemed to me more sensitive so I could shoot it further away. Just wanted to share this with you since you helped me with this first.

I love potassium perchlorate ! It likes to be confined in little containers with a fuse as well.
substitute a paper bag ( some leak powder though ) just to be safe. German Dark is quite a bit more reactive as flash. I use powdered ammonium nitrate at about half the amount or less. Extra Perchlorate ( a bit more anyway ) and a little extra German Dark Flash to the mix of nitrates. There are actually a few ways to get .22 sensitive targets. Using a harder container ( carboard) gives a much louder boom ! Carry on, your method obviously works too !
I just want to make a couple safety suggestions. When you mix the two powders you have made a very dangerous flash powder. Static electricity can and will set flash off and 21 grams is equal to 7 old school M-80's. Don't do it. Instead mix the potassium perchlorate with the amonium nitrate first. Shake it up to coat the prills then add the aluminum powder and mix. Second there is a reason they only sell 1/2 pound 22 sensitive targets. The cap sensitivity is much lower than the high velocity and the 22 mix is very unstable. Will larger amounts blow up in your face? Probably not but you should still treat the stuff gently. I've mixed and shot tons of my own mixes over the years and mixing 22 sensitive still makes me nervous. One last thing about the aluminum powder, bright aluminum will work and it's cheaper but dark flake works much better. 12g to a pound of ammonium nitrate for high velocity and 10g with 4g of KCLO4 per pound for 22 sensitive works every time.

Burt Reynolds No it's not NG but messing around with explosives you really don't understand isn't a good idea. The flash powder mixture he makes before adding to the AN is actually worse than NG. NG will not detonate from static electricity, 21 grams of flash will. It wouldn't just blow off a finger or two, it would remove entire limbs. That much flash doesn't need to be contained to explode.
The 22 sensitive stuff works because you have taken a relatively stable explosive and made it much less stable. I've seen videos of people hitting a pile of high velocity mix with a hammer. I have yet seen anyone do it with the 22 sensitive mix.

dnssigns Please. Did you really try to say flash will remove limbs? Maybe a few pounds but an m80 goes off in your hand it will burn your hand you meed your hand closed to do the damage. This is not a very high explosive. Yes it still is dangerous and yes its explosive but saying Flash is more dangerous than NG is laughable. Just mixing NG and you can go boom. Thats high velocity detonation.
SmithN' Wesson youve never seen an m80 then. If one goes off in your hand, most of your hand will be gone from a true m80. The point he was trying to get across is add the potassium perchlorate to the ammonium nitrate and mix that first then when ready to shoot add the aluminum powder and mix that in. Doing it that way is less likely to explode from discharged static electricity and what he is stating is very intelligent. Contained flash powder even 2 grams is dangerous. You have a nice component for a good sized bang. Why anyone would say you are trying to trick them is beyond me. This is pretty much the same way I make this and have never had an issue. My guess is that someone may have not followed simply instruction or tried to improve on something that needs no improvement. Anyway, great job and instruction video!

Your mixture may be "right on the border line"; that is, it may be suboptimal, but it still generally explodes for you.
But someone else might try to duplicate it, and their aluminum powder may have more oxide on the flakes, perhaps more or less of a stearic acid coating, maybe a somewhat different particle size distribution, etc. Or maybe they tried to initiate the mixture on a day when it was cold outside, perhaps with a slightly weaker .22 cartridge, etc.
In other words, with the chemicals you got from your supplier, with your .22 rifle and your choice of ammo, etc., you've had good results, but there are variables involved here which could cause someone else to have poor results.
For an experiment, I suggest increasing the amount of aluminum powder, as it may result in a more powerful, more reliable mixture.
I will give it a try.
Let's see, your mixture is 9 grams of Al per 4 lbs of NH4NO3, so that's only about 0.5% fuel. Maybe you could try 1% (i.e., 18 grams of Al) and see what happens? You could even go up to 5% or even higher, but at some point the sensitivity will fall off, even if the mixture is more powerful.
Another way to get a more sensitive mixture (which also has a higher VoD and detonation pressure) would be to crush the ammonium nitrate prills somehow, to make it more of a powder. (But you don't want to pack the powder too tightly or it won't detonate).
Check out Table 1 in the following paper and you can see that when the AN particle size was less than 0.2 mm, the critical diameter of the mixture was only 7mm, the VoD was 3.3 km/sec and the detonation pressure was 2.8 GPa.

Howdy Kevin, great video and recipe. Works just fine for me. It could be that the viewers who were unsuccessful obtained the incorrect al powder. Most likely a spherical or spheroidal particle type as apposed to a flake. This has a huge impact on its reactivity. As (Harold Smith) mentioned 1% al would be better than 0.5% for your fuel ratio (more intimate mixture)with your oxidizer. Keep the videos coming! Good job.

Any reason to use bright flake aluminum instead of dark pyro? I’ve always found dark pyro to be superior for flash powder and homemade exploding targets, but I’ve never made .22 sensitive targets.
Dark Pyro plus potassium chlorate can go off unexpectedly, with perchlorate its OK to use it though. Keep all 10.

I just use a 70/30 mix of potassium perchlorate and 325 magnalium or bright flake and I only shoot 22 shorts at my targets and I’ve made 1000,s over the years and I’ve never had one fail to explode. My backing is a 1/2 thick by 12/12 square for my backing. Why waste extra money on ammonia nitrate when you can use just these two. I ever save my old used aluminum sheeting and grind it up and it even works just fine as long as the aluminum is fine enough.

It would, but you get a lot more bang for your buck (literally) by using ammonium nitrate.

By weight 70%potassium perchlorate, 30% Elkhart dark, 3micron. It is ball milled so the edges of the tiny flakes catch fire more easily. On a very small scale. Next get a double base gunpowder like "Titegroup by Hodgdon". It's an old formulation that is believe it or not 40% nitroglycerin. Mix the 70/30 powder with the double base gunpowder 50/50 by weight. Be careful, it is strong. I use it for some personal salutes on the 4th and new years. Don't sell illegal fireworks. People can lose hands, lose hearing for life or a dog can pick it up and have to be put down. You must have full control from beginning to boom. What I like about this mix is if it catches fire without being in a cardboard shell it just slowly burns like gunpowder. Once contained it takes off.
I believe you from the start. the ones that can't do it can't add up the proper mix.

There is another aspect to this. I've always mixed in sulphur. The KClO4 reacts with the trace sulphuric acid to make pechloric acid. The perchloric acid is very sensitive. Throw a rock at the mixture.

Also if your going to do this at least mix the Aluminium with the AN first then the perchlorate. That way your not making flash. The perchlorate is desinsitizing the ammonal. Right now your detonating the perchlorate. You can tell from the lack of orange in the smoke. Just some friendly advice to keep you safe and you can use less aluminium mixing the correct Ammonal ratio.

I love your method! It works great! Have you tried Sonic Boom Rimfire 22 Binary Targets. Im pretty sure they use powdered ammonium nitrate instead of prill. And 2 tablespoons of that sounds like 1lb of high velocity binary mixes. Its insanely loud for being so little. If you haven't tried it i strongly recomend you do so. Its sold at cabela's.

Not sure how long you've had the explosive AN...but I'm sure people's problems are because you can't buy explosive AN at local feed store anymore they changed the rules of purchase after Oklahoma incident. Only a licensed blaster has access to that.
Kevin: if that bag of 30 grams of flashpowder goes off in your hands, a tornado strength wind hot as a welding torch will blow through your fingers. Your eyes are at risk and your ears too because over an ounce of flashpowder is selfconfining. Please diaper method it. If the finished product had gone off in your hands, both your hands would have been meat loaf and you would possibly have been killed. Please be more careful and promote the techniques the fireworks industry use. If you won't, please wear workman's gloves, eye and ear protection. Moreover, wear a mouth mask, because aluminum dust of that fine a mesh is fine particulate dust that you invisibly inhale an will clog the most delicate parts of your lungs, causing respiratory impairment, worse than smoking!

I got some 34-0-0 from the co op and aluminum powder and mix it and hit dead on and nothing but my 34-0-0 has some kind of gritty stuff on it

21 grams of Potassium Perchlorate {HP}High purity and 9 grams of bright flake alum powder 200 to 325 mesh ….Note you will have even better results if you purchase alum / mag powder that is 200 to 325 mesh . The mix should be added to 5 pounds of 34/0/0 of ammonia nitrate . It is recommended that you use caution when mixing the mixture with the ammonia nitrate …...avoid any static , sparks, or open flames....I personally only use 2 teaspoons of mix with a pound of ammonia nitrate at any given time . And for your safety and others that are in the vicinity do not ever use near metal …...This method works and will kill anyone whom is careless . However if common sense is used this method can be very fun and sure to put smiles on any ones face.

Due to unsavory people using ammonium nitrate for bad terrorist stuff, most cold packs are no longer pure ammonium nitrate anymore, they are Calcium Ammonium Nitrate and will not sensitize like in this video. I suspect the reason Kevin has had a lot of skeptics to his recipe is because they're using Calcium Ammonium Nitrate instead of AN and they don't know it and then it doesn't work. You can thank the government for keeping us "safe" from having fun.
If you get quality ingredients I can hereby attest to this method being extremely effective.

You made a remark about mixing in the flash powder along with a phrase that has gotten a lot of people killed in a broad range of hazardous activities over the years. "I know this isn't ideal, but I've never had a problem." If something is dangerous, and the danger is a catastrophe if it occurs, like blowing off your hands and blinding yourself, recognize that a very small chance of a disaster, say half a percent, is unacceptable, AND that "I've never had any problem doing it this way before", can lead to a disastrous false sense of security. Please recognize this trap and be careful. Look at the Space Shuttle. That craft was really very dangerous. A 1.5% failure rate. Until the first accident, people were lulled into thinking it was way safer.

I know you said 22lr. But will it work with a pcp rifle. At about 80 yards it has roughly 25- 30 fpe 44(muzzle). Is that enough?

a couple things. Do you Not use any Mag/Al Powder in this mix? I just watched the vid again and it shows you use the Bright Flake 325mesh Aluminum Powder. is That it? No Mag/Al Powder at all? Also, you mention 21g of the Potassium PerChlorate (and put in 2 spoonfuls *even attempting to take back a tiny bit) then you say u need 9g of Aluminum Powder and proceed to put in nearly 6 spoonfuls... ?? WTF ? am i missing something? Is the Potassium PerChlorate weigh a BUTT TON More than the AL Powder? Because 21g is more than Double 9g and yet 2 spoonfuls / 6 spoonfuls ??? Yes it would seem like I am adding a lot of alum bright flake but I assure you the 6 teaspoons seen did make 9 grams in total and yes the potassium perchlorate by weight{ spoon} can add up very quickly to 21 grams ....The reason you didn't see mag/alum is because when I did this video I didn't have any at the time. but it works very well also just remember to add 9 grams of it rather than 9 grams of the bright flake 200 to 325 mesh.. Keep in mind that the alum is flake and very light in volume were the potassium perchlorate is not as fluffy and its weight can often be achieved very quickly .

How do we know you shot it with the 22 rifle? You were off camera when shooting said rifle. I bet you used a 75 mm fully semi automatic rifle with a flash supressor. So we still can't believe that you are not trying to trick us!

What voleicty of ammo where you using I only was able to get it to detonate once. I used sonic boom ammonium nitrate. The size of the pellets where much small. I was using a 10/22 takedown with a 16in barrel. Cci mini mag. 1250fps pretty sure voleicty was the issue but I would like to get ur opinion. Thank you.

Can you help find some thing that would work for an air rifle. I've seen the firebird targets for air rifles and that's a little to much. I just want a nice flash and puff of smoke. Not really a bang, potassium perchlorate with red phosphorus but red phosphorus is hard to order online. Any suggestions.
Aluminium powder and copper oxide thermite will explode the way you want. I think Backyard Ballistics did a video on making targets that way.

Wrong. That is a myth built by either using very weak firecrackers or trying to detonate large amounts. The targets work and are sold by multiple companies.

molecular sieves would dry it out.they're small porous ceramic beads that absorb water. Kinda like putting your phone in a bag of rice. but it's cheaper just to buy a new batch of ammonium nitrate.

Well ANFO is ammonium nitrate and fuel oil, Im assuming the targets your talking about are something like tannerite. Targets like that are ammonium nitrate and aluminum powder, called Ammonal, so there pretty much the same thing.

I use 34/0/0 with potassium perchlorate and Bright flake alum powder 200 to 325 mesh ....Mag alum 200 to325 works even better.

chlorate is 3, perchlorate is 4. Theres a difference in KClO3 versus KClO4.
