It will be interesting to see how far he goes this year. Mesenbrink is a no-nonsense kind of guy. He never stops attacking his opponent. He has really good, quick moves. He is a dangerous opponent for everybody.
More than anything, I enjoy how he goes about it - always a great attitude and ends every match with a smile on his face. To that end, he can absolutely win B1G’s and finish top four at Nationals.
Reminds me a bit of Nolf. Constant motion, gets angles, lots of attacks. If that comparison holds any truth he competes with those guys very well. Also wrestles Nolf and Dake in the room so, he's not going to be awed by O'toole or Carr. The significance of that room cannot be overstated, IMO.
lol. Haven't kept up to speed the last couple years. Went to the Oregon State duel then went down to see if we could meet Sanderson. Met this kid while he was talking to other people...had no idea who he was. Good kid. Friendly. Down to earth. Took pictures for him. :) Hope he does well.
I felt the same way after seeing him tech Olguin. I wasn't sure where he was, but now I really feel he has a chance to contend for a title especially since he doesn't have to wrestle the other top 3 in his weight, I think that will work out to his benefit.
I wonder if there was some illness in the Oregon State wrestling room. Sure, the PSU beasts won, as expected. But outside of those, there were lots of surprises on how big PSU won (including 125).
@@JadedOptimist and no future guys who weren't in college during covid could ever have the opportunity to win 5 titles. He would become the 2nd greatest NCAA wrestler in history on accolades.
The lack of a weight cut can be a disservice if he meets someone like O’Toole in the Finals. Hopefully they meet in the Semis. Dude is the real deal. It’s not like he teched Olguin because of the 3-pt takedown or with riding time. It was the 2nd period. He’s not getting no less than 3rd at NCAAs. Olejnik, Ramirez & Hamiti aren’t beating him in March
I completely agree, it looks like he could easily end up in the NCAA finals. Similar to Levi last year, Starocci, Brooks, and Vincenzo their first years with PSU…….
He's the real deal! I don't see any weakness. Offense ✔️, scrambling ability, ✔️ gas tank ✔️ wrestling IQ ✔️. I eagerly await the Big Ten schedule for him. He's a threat to division, no doubt.
Seems like PSU has one of these guys every year that we have lower expectations for their first year but come in and beat someone they shouldn't and are an immediate threat. Last year it was Levi. Both are really fun to watch, but I was shocked at how precise and deliberate Mitchell was in that match. So yeah, you have it right, the cart is well behind the horse, CP. Going to be a fun tournament season.
Real deal! Top 2/3, not sure he can take O’Toole. But has the deepest gas tank I’d say. I want to see how he does after getting taken down. With his aggressiveness and fearless style he might get dumped a time or two. Gonna be fun to watch him 4 years!
I think Penn State has some magic dust they sprinkle on good wrestlers and makes them great wrestlers, makes great wrestlers into unstoppable wrestlers
@@BruthaVIII yup a massive disappointment he had 0 offense. I’ve seen a few people say that apparently Mitchell throws him around in the wrestling room
I saw his match at Oregon. I had no idea how good he was. It was shocking frankly. I came away believing he is going to make a big impact come March and that there are only a couple of guys that can possibly beat him, and that would be the two national champs Carr and O'Toole.
165lb could actually have 3 national champions if Shane Griffith drops back down from 174lb. With 3 time national champion Carter Starocci and one time National champ Mekhi Lewis at 174lb , it's not out of the realm of possibility
Messenbrink has INSANE offense. That alone makes him dangerous. His scrambling put him over the top. Hes in the mix with Keegan. He beats Carr without a doubt. Olejnik just lost & Ramirez ducks anyone ranked after beating Carr
Penn State continuing to monopolize college wrestling. Cal Baptist to Penn State, Cal Poly to Penn State, Minnesota to Penn State. A total joke if you ask me.
Many of these kids have plans for their future in wrestling. They go to the place that is best equipped for them to achieve their goals with the best coaches in wrestling. If they continue their career in wrestling they can just move to the NLWC. Ever hear the phrase Iron sharpens iron?
Too soon to tell with MM? Or clearly a title contender?
Starocci called him a "psycho" and meant it as a compliment. Enough said.
All American for sure, however, I think that Keegan and Carr still are a step above currently.
Number 3 right now
@austinhavard4240 ...I respectfully disagree. I think 165 is a 2 horse race between Keegan & Messenbrink
It will be interesting to see how far he goes this year. Mesenbrink is a no-nonsense kind of guy. He never stops attacking his opponent. He has really good, quick moves. He is a dangerous opponent for everybody.

He’s a better hand fighter and has better positioning but is less creative.
I think he beats Levi also
Good call. Believe he did previously in an open tourney. @@ericday2427
Mitchell is the real deal in the toughest weight class. Christian your videos are so good and insightful. Keep them coming!
Thanks! I plan on it.

Messenbrink and O'Toole went to the same high school in Wisconsin. Two years apart, but still. I'm guessing they are very familiar with each other.

MM will be in the NCAA final this year. Look who he has to wrestle with in practice. Potential Hodge winner in Staracci
I wonder if there was some illness in the Oregon State wrestling room. Sure, the PSU beasts won, as expected. But outside of those, there were lots of surprises on how big PSU won (including 125).
Van Ness is a leader for PSU as well, he will be back
Another fantastic video! Thank you CP!
Thank you Dino.
Like to see him wrestle Levi at 157, think that’s a more natural weight for him, might be a touch small for 165 but still awesome
There would be no point because both are doing well at their respective weights and they both have a shot at winning NCAA’s which is more team points
Fully agree, he reminds me of Sidakov
Need that Flo Sticker on the Computer Christian. I watched the FRL today and was disappointed to not see it.
Doesn't Starocci have the opportunity to be a 5x NCAA champion? This year Brooks graduates, but Carter has another year, right?
He said he's not coming back but Cael can be pretty persuasive and being a five timer has to be hard to resist.
yep
He would be the first ever 5x champ, wouldn’t he?

He’s the real deal all the way.
great show
Tech Falling the number 11 in less than two periods is probably a good indicator that he is top 5 caliber
3
Also….Always that potential Starocci comes back for Year 5.

Waiting to see the effects of coming out from under a long ride, but do like the engine and attacks when in space.

To me he's a combo of Askren's funk and David Taylors' multiple attacks...
A combination of two of the best collegiate wrestlers we've seen in the past 20 years is not a bad shout. And they're both coach him.
@@jwood1658 I was unsure about the new 3 point takedown rule... Now I'm seeing it benefit PSU.

Mesenbrink tore up Mikey Caliendo last night. Mesebrink is no joke and I think it's gonna be Mesenbrink vs O'toole for the Title.
All we know is, Bernie sure as hell ain’t gonna be the one scoring them lots of points 😂
Mitch should take big 10 and if not Sat night at NCAA’s has the stamina to take 3rd
Why the hell was he at Cal Baptist?
You can here people talking in the background for a lot of the video
Who cares
Mitchell vs O’toole
I do think he has a bad matchup with Kegan. I’m thinking a cradle!
Its what we do
Bob Costas woulda done it in a shirt with a collar and a tie. You can too hombre.
Have him and otoole wrestled
And now he has techd Amine.
Keep an eye on Ohio States 😊Bryce Hepner
Mitchell breaks guys with his pace so I think he stay with anybody in the top ten.
