The first time all 5 were together was the day before the audition for Sing Off. So yes, that probably is when KO and Avi met.
That is when they met in person. They were all talking via phone, but Kevin was finishing finals at Yale.
What Kevin did in the beginning was a motorcycle starting. So cool.
and Avi's bass sounds like the engine idling. They were amazing right from the get go.
Been looking forward to this one since you started. For an old rock-lover like me, these kids slay it. Love to watch the new generation a cappella morph seamlessly into heavy rock. Kevin's 'shot' was pure dramatic fun. Great reaction. I'm subbed and with you for the Sing-Off journey.
Scott, Mitch, and Kirstin knew each other as kids and sang together in high school. Scott and Kirstin graduated and went to different universities. Mitch, being a year younger, stayed in Texas for his senior year in high school. Kevin was in his senior year of pre-med at Yale. Avi was in the music scene in California.
Scott got into an a cappella group at the University of Southern California. He met Ben Bram and they decided to put a group together for the Sing Off. They recruited Kirstin and Mitch. Ben said they needed to add a bass and a beatboxer. Avi was a known bass singer so they recruited him through mutual friends. They found Kevin on TH-cam. His video of beatboxing while playing the cello had gone viral.
Timing was an issue. Mitch skipped his high school graduation to get to the audition. Kevin, understandably, wanted to complete his final exams so he could graduate from Yale. Kevin did not meet the others until the day before the audition.
After they found out they were going to be on the show, Avi and Kevin stayed at Scott’s parents’ house during the summer so they could practice together.
A missing piece here is Ben Bram, whom Scott met when he joined SoCal Vocals. He was in his senior year and was hired on graduation to work doing arrangements for this show. He was instrumental in creating the Pentatonix sound, which is why he shared the Grammy Awards with them for Daft Punk and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.
@@thechomiji You raise a valid point: Ben Bram does not get enough credit. He is the 6th, behind the scenes guy. He definitely deserved the Grammys
Two of the remaining episodes are killer! Marvin Gaye and Florence and the Machines are vehicles that allow PTX to take it way over the top to secure. Their win!
Mitch had these small moments where he added flourish, and I LOVE that. We might call it "Classic Rock," but stuff like this was revolutionary when it was new.
This is the one that i believe EVERYONE new they would be the winners!
Kevin was taking his final exams and graduating from Yale pre-med just before they got together. The earliest he could get to California left them just one day of rehearsal time before they had to audition.
I think this is the first time I've seen them use the brief silence that they nowadays use so effectively to showcase the following part: for example, in "Hallelujah" before Mitch's solo.
The next performance was done on the same night so Kirstie was sick for that one as well. Mitch is kept mostly under the radar until the 12th performance kind of like an ace in the hole but when they release him OMG!!
I read that the producers made them keep Mitch under wraps so the competition seemed like more of a competition. Could be true, though the videos of the guys talking I've watched recently only had them mentioning that they did not get to style themselves and laughing about "masc Mitch" and how low he sang compared to his preference now.

That crazy sound you're hearing at the beginning is Avi doing his overtone singing, also known as Tuvan throat singing. He did it several times during _The Sing-Off,_ and I don't understand why the judges never noticed it.
Even though Kirstie was sick as hell (it was VERY obvious during the judge's comments), she was a trooper. This was the one that made every other group on the show start to sweat hard, and it just got worse for the competition from this point on. AND it was still a few more performances before they unleashed the beast that is Mitch (they purposely held him back until just the right moment). Avi & Kevin both joined the group just before their audition for The Sing Off, but Kirstie, Scott & Mitch..."The Trio"...had known each other and sung together since they were children. And yes, this song was the forerunner of what became Heavy Metal a couple of years later.
You need to watch them in the finals of season 4 when they perform I need your love for the crowd.
Blown away! Avi - CRAZY! Kevin-CRAZY! Trio-Awesome! Avi definitely made this song, but all the perks they added in made such a smooth well put together performance! I think this was the first actual PTX brilliance combination that we got to witness! Just my opinion! Thanks for the reaction and keeping it real! POT ROAST! :)

So, I love that you are doing these. Please, after the final performance, please make sure you do the episode where they announce the winner. Yes, we know they won, but it is awesome to see Pentatonix and how terrified they are before they hear their name. I cry each time I see it! The emotions they go through when the realize they did it, is awesome to see!
Great reaction. Thanks. I think the competition was a bit worried after this Pentatonix performance. (As they should have been.) I love the opening sounds made by Kevin and Avi and the dramatic sudden silence during the song. They tried different things while on the show and they all paid off well except in performance 2. (Even that one was not too bad)
I don't know how sick Kirsten really was (she looks like she just wants to lie down while the judges are talking but they definitely built up 'behind the scenes drama' for the sake of good TV. You can hear Scott's voice is getting pushed to the limit as well, and that comes back to bite him a little in 12. I think everyone has filled you in on the different rumors about why Mitch is "leashed" but he is so good about doing his part to see them succeed, it shows that he isn't a spotlight hog. You get a taste of him in 10 (I've seen reactors melt on this one) and full blown Mitch emerges in 12.

@@Sate12 They cut back on junk food too and started putting more healthy food on their riders. Not unusual for kids away from their momma's cooking for the first time. They admitted later than they felt awful and changed the menu.
I agree. By the end of this performance the other groups were now hoping to come in second. And PTX just got better. By number 12 there was absolutely no doubt of who was going to come in first.

I remember one reactor freaked out about how Avi sounded outside by the tree without a 🎤 in the intro. Actual basses are so rare (as opposed to baritones singing bass). If you watch any of the other bands' performances Kevin & Avi blow them all away every time as the rythmn section.
I repeat: the Group songs at the beginnings. You can hear every member of PTX no matter how many other groups are on stage

I think Scott had more experience performing so he took the lead more often in the Sing Off.
I agree. Mitch was basically a shy teenager during the Sing Off. He didn't come into his own until a few years later.
The producers of the show thought (incorrectly) that Mitch's high contra-tenor would not go well with audiences, and were afraid of putting any attention at all onto his sexuality (even though he had been out of the closet for many years at this point), so the group purposely held Mitch back...at least until performance #12. That's when they finally unleashed the Mitch beast and the world finally heard and saw the real him. The producers also wanted each group to have a "leader", and even though The Trio had always been an equal partnership, Scott was kinda nominated by the others to take the lead for TV purposes. In reality, both Kirstie & Mitch had more stage performance experience than Scott before the Sing Off began.
@@larrywt656 I got the same feeling that the producers were wanting Scott to be the leader. While all of the Trio had a lot of stage experience, it did seem like Scott may have had more TV experience. Star Search Youth edition I think it was.
You really see this in the openings. I think the purposely pitted Scott and the guy from Dartmouth Airs against each other in those openings.
Another funny thing about the openings is you see lots of Scott and Kirstie, some Mitch and Kevin, but no Avi. I did not see him once. I guess they kept the basses in the back.
This one put them in the top 3 for sure, #10 put them in first place, #12 sealed the deal.
And they did it on stairs.

Just so you know--you missed a brief backstage appearance with PTX talking about this performance. Could you please just let each video run to the end? You can always edit out the end if it doesn't include PTX. But most of the time, it does. We longtime Pentaholics love seeing reactors watching even those little snippets of Baby PTX!

Spoiler alert: Unfortunately, Mitch doesn't really get to shine during the Song Off performances. They kept their arrangements in his lower range.
Mitch was shy and self-conscious back then. He preferred a place in the back row. This career brought him out, though, and let him bloom when he finally believed people really did appreciate him and his talent. Now his self confidence is front and center and he's developed a good amount of sass.
