I simply can’t believe that this performance has had only 25k views! I’m a 78 yr old Texan who was living & working in oil patch in the UK and N. Sea, when Don Mc was in his prime….and he just never got out of it….He’s still a very classic, humble human being who’s in love with music and a gift of poetry…a rare combination for any generation. My question is this to the young people today …”What will you be singing 50 years from today?? I simply would not want to be even a year younger than I am and believe I was blessed to grow up in the greatest generation of music ever…50’s, 60’s, and mid 70’s! I still sing and play…. and remember where I was and who I was with when all these great songs were delivered by the artists! And, James Macdonald….you, sir, are a gifted and talented singer & player…I pray health & prosperity over you and that somehow, Don McClean will get to hear this cover you performed…he will love it, I assure you! God Bless!
I've seen your renditions or 3 Don Mclean songs, James. They're all excellently done. They make me long to come back to my guitars. That will be my major daily activity as soon as i retire fm work. Thanks for your posts.
If anyone else had to cover this song, it's divine providence that it should be someone of your talent. A sensitive homage to the original as well as to your own abilities. Rare!
You are dead on correct! I’m 78 and was living in London when Don Mc was in his prime….and he just never got out of it….He’s still a very classic, humble human being who’s in love with music and a gift of poetry…a rare combination for any generation. That was so absolutely beautiful. Your vocal triplets were so perfect and added to the heartfelt feeling you displayed for the song. I was truly moved by your performance ❤❤
Hard to find covers where feeling overshadows great technique...that's you brother... great sound and great cover honoring the master's creation. Thanks.
This is very likely my favourite Don McLean song; one of those great songs that doesn't reveal the title until the closing moments. This is a very poignant version, beautifully rendered.
Just come across this absolutely brilliant! Such a sad lament. Remember singing this around the South of France in the early seventies with a friend who I've long since lost contact with. Thank you for taking me back!
James, you have rendered a simply exquisite cover of this rare much-underappreciated classic Don McLean song. Thank you for the pleasure of your exceptional artistry.
Listened five times in a row, and I still can't believe what I heard! It's as though James channeled Don! Amazing! Should anyone brag about their rendition, see James and he'll straighten that out!
Absolutely beautifully played and sung. I would love the tabs for your version, or better yet a video tutorial :-) Thanks so much for sharing your talents!
Just discovered this very gifted and talented musician who did what i should have done..be patient and practice practice practice... what a great voice and what a superb delivery
I normally hate covers but this is as good as Don's. I think the voicing is nearly as good as Don's and the instrumental is quite a bit deeper and more complex.
I learned to play this song a little while back exactly like Don plays it. To learn this beautiful song, note-for-note with two video tutorials, tabs and play-thru included for only $6.00, go here: www.jerrysguitarbar.com/guitar-video-lessons/individual-songs/don-mclean-empty-chairs/ . When I listen to James' rendition, I can start my day off on the right foot. Just a beautiful cover!

AT 83 stumbled on this marvelous rendition of Don's lovely composition. Strong memories of my early thirties...unforgettable....
Never thought anyone could capture this song like Don. You did it though! Thank you.
