MSI motherboard Users need to update NOW SMM vulnerabilty Sinkclose & Logofail
There have been a number of recent vulnerabilities on the PC platform recently and some have hit the news and headlines, but are they doomsday level threats? How can we patch them? And why have MSI been hit a little harder than others?
We will try and answer some of those questions, and also show you how to protect yourself from some of these threats with a simple BIOS update.
These threats also effect other brands as well, So even if you are not on the MSI eco system it is still worth updating the BIOS on ASUS ASRock Gigabyte Biostar and other brands like DELL HP Acer and others.
This can protect your against the following vulnerabilities
    CVE 2024-36877 nvd.nist.gov/v...
    MSI SMM threat
    CVE 2023-31315 nvd.nist.gov/v...
    AMD Sinkclose vulnerability
    CVE 2023-40238 nvd.nist.gov/v...

Looks like the fix BIOSes are beta for all the AM4 models - while you would normally avoid beta, it's probably worth using one in this case
For the AM5, it seems to be the last non-beta, with the beta having the 9000 series TDP boost

    • @mikesunboxing

They are patching their bios quite fast actually. Usually end user side goes slower, people do not pay attention to their bios version n date of it.. Another funny stuff manufacturers doesn't suggest bios updates. Even on msi web site and msi center keeps saying if it is working we do not suggest bios updates, basicly says do not update your bios act like you are still in 2010 :D . If you're on an Intel 13/14gen, you should probably update your BIOS to get that 0x129 microcode, regardless of who made your motherboard. Of course: Fixes to security/stability are always a great reason to flash your BIOS. It was a bit more intimidating to do this when I started out on PCs in the mid 90s, but I find it exceedingly non-scary and easy these days with things like MSI's "M-Flash". Plus, unlike back then, you now have a ton of good info/guides re flashing out there on the web - which also makes the whole thing way less mysterious and frightening.

@@mikesunboxing To add more usable information to this: Upon updating to the latest BIOS (28/8/2024 time stamp) my television and surroundsound system are on longer recognised, I have tried multiple BIOS' to see if that fixes it - it does not, the only BIOS that worked was from 2021 and I am not using that because it is woeful and really unstable - I am currently running the BETA version, as it has the latest fixes, but still my television and sound system are not being picked up. I run an AMD system (everything is AMD), and the gpu is the picture output of course, but I now have lost the ability to use the AMD gpu audio drivers too, which is really strange as they've never given me any issue - they're actually really good, nice low latency and high fidelity. I have reset my audio drivers and setting multiple times (twice for each BIOS I tried) and still nothing.
**I have managed to get the audio working to some degree, neither my television or sound system are being recognised at all, but now the optical input works. Just. I do not have 5.1 capability nor do I have any form of adjustments - highs, mids, lows etc. - Realtek audio control panel has vanished and does not seem to be installed, it was about 2 hours ago, but has since vanished. **
I think this might be the last MSI product I own, this is utterly ridiculous now, 5 different BIOS just to get sound to come out my pc and even then it's only at 25% the quality and range I had before.

"MSI’s manufacturing facility outside Shenzen, China is massive. Seriously: the complex, which I visited in late May, currently houses approximately 7000 employees, according to the facility’s director. Many of those employees work to produce thousands of motherboards and graphics cards every single day,"
To list them all individually would be a laborious and pointless task.
