Wow! I had no idea this was actually a thing! I've had this for years (I'm 72). I would try to find where or what was causing it, but nothing would show up, no rash, no insect bites, nothing. I'm glad to know this isn't an abnormal thing. The only thing I treat it with is a back scratcher. It helps temporarily, until it goes away on it's own, which it does after a couple days. Watching this got it going, but my back scratcher's across the room, and I have a cat on my lap. 😬

I use a dry brush, it seems to be the only thing that actually touches the itch and relieves it. I’ve had it for years. I figured some sort of nerve damage. I have that sensation in a couple of other places too, but it started just under my left shoulder blade.,I’m right handed.

I had this for many decades. It disappeared, along with my joint pain, when I changed my diet due to a different condition. I eat a very low carb diet, and this seems to have eliminated whatever foods triggered the problem. On the rare occasions it returns, I review what I’ve eaten for the past day to try to determine the cause.

My skin is calmer and I have fewer facial wrinkles. My hair is thicker, too. I pat my skin dry with a soft towel. Please avoid scratching with anything, including hard towels. It makes everything much worse. Simple non-perfumed lotions are best like Sorbolene or QV lotion. Wash your bed sheets regularly as skin mites can cause itching but don't use lots of detergent in your washing machine as you may be allergic to that. Try to avoid any hard back scratchers. Exercise helps everything but splash your face with cool water afterwards. Meditation helps all problems in a general low key way.

This is a very good explanation of this condition which I have suffered from for over 20 years. I have tried the various treatments mentioned but these really only treat the symptoms rather than treat the cause.
I have personally found that chiropractic treatments and posture changes have been the most effective way to treat this condition. Most of us are guilty of sloppy posture and becoming more aware of this and adjustments from a chiropractor or physical therapist will help the most imo

Same for me, had "the itch" for decades.
I thought I was the only one.
Am 70, right handed, mild to medium itch on my back right side (exactly in the location described) and relief provided by a backscratcher.
Always thought it was either due to a mole/skin cancer (I live in the very SUNNY Outback of Australia) an insect bite or dry skin.
Over the years have asked Doctors and skin specialists to have a look, all have looked, shrugged their shoulders and said "there is nothing there".
I now suspect now that it is caused by my bad sitting and/or standing posture. I am working on my posture.

I have had this for years. In 2000 I had an accident that damaged the thoracic area of my back. When I asked my dermatologist about it I described the itch as "intense", and told her it was different than my usual skin itches. She said it was most likely a nerve damage issue. She prescribed Ketoconazole cream and hydrocortisone cream. I use both and it stops the itch for about 24 hours, until I reapply. I stopped scratching it because that seems to explode the itching. What is hard to remedy is the fact that I am female and need to wear a bra. This is proving to be an item of torture. It moves just slightly on my back every time I move and causes more symptoms. Mine is only on the right side. It takes getting used to and after practice, you can ignore it to a degree.

I'm a woman who has this on the right side of my spine and more mid-back. I have some suggestions: Using lotion twice a day to keep it hydrated (prevent dry skin from exacerbating the problem). Icing it to stop the itch really works well. Trying to do exercises which strengthen the muscles between the shoulder blades helps. Also the vibration from the Next Roller is a tool when the itching is intense. It's also been better since I started using a "LifePro vibration plate", which I purchased for moving my lymph system. It's similar to the Next Roller, in effect, so vibration seems to help curb the itch. Oh! Try a bra which clasps in the front. It seems to work better. Mine is on the bra strap line too. Good luck!

Myself and another person in this comment section had it from food allergies. Try starting with brown rice, ghee, and bragg's soy, eat nothing else for a couple days, then start adding food, wait to see when the itching starts again. For me, it was onions, for you it might be something else.
If I eat onions, within the hour, right under my left shoulder blade, total fire.
It might be onions for you, too, or another food, but as changing diet worked for two of us in the comments, odds are, it will work for you.

For the first couple of months of the winter, my back is covered with excoriations, gouges etc, as I scratch myself during the night, without even realizing it. My back has so many little dried blood spots appearing I look as if I have measles! I keep my nails as short as I can so as not to exacerbate the situation. It only occurs during the winter months. The itching is chronic and I have to use a bath brush, backscratcher etc. to relieve the itch, and also to cover my back with Hydrocortisone. This has been going on for years, and I had assumed it was just dry skin, and have a humidifier on my bedside table. I had no idea this was an actually condition.

Many thanks to JJ Medicine and to all who have shared their experiences in the comment section. I first saw a dermatologist about this when I was in my early 60s, and he couldn't find a skin-related answer to the problem. To his credit, he guessed that it could be a nerve misfiring. This was in the 1990s (I'm 92 now) and I had recently had a compression fracture in the neck area, so I assumed that was the cause. I have never found a topical lotion or an oral medication that helped, but I keep a back-scratcher in every room in the house.

Thank you for this video,I’m 64 and I’m having this issue since last 2 years,as I’m diabetic & hence when I have any sugary food or drink, the itchy ness is most severe,so I was assuming that it was because of the sugar intake, but can now understand that it is a medical issue.most doctors couldn’t understand the cause of this itchy sensation.thanks.

Thank you! My 93 year old father has been struggling with these symptoms and has had no relief from any dermatologist. He will present this possibility tomorrow at his appointment.

Very interesting! I had an area on back (T 5 & 6) & my dermatologist & he said it was due to my desiccating discs. I suspect there is more than 1 cause of itching, but you have enlightened me to other nerves involved. Thanks so much.

Wow, this just poped up on my recom. and I'm gobsmacked. This is what I had for the last three months coupled with random stabbing pain. I went to the doctors and got physio therapy for a while and it's getting better but I did not know that this has a name. I'm a bit too young to have it but I had to take some meds for the last two years that put me artificially into menopause 30 years early.
Exercise helped me a lot and I hope it will be gone for ever as the itching was sometimes worse enough to keep me awake at night and the random stabbing pain was hard to ignore when I had to sit at a desk. Thanks for finally giving me a very possible diagnosis

At 77 years of age I have finally found this is an actual thing! I have had an area between my shoulder blade and my spine that itches. I cannot recall how long this has been happening, but I cannot remember when I did not have it.

I have always called it my "itchy spot" because that is what my mom called hers. Both of us right hand dominant, but our itchy spot on the right. Gonna try Dicolfenac because I already use it for arthritis with great relief. Thanks for the information.

Thank you sooooo much for this video!!!!!!!!!!!! I have had this condition for years exactly in the area you describe! I have never been able to understand why it itches so badly and there is never anything there to indicate a cause. Recently, I had a CT of my back after a car accident and it did show a large osteophyte in my thoracic spine. As I have a lot of arthritis I can now connect the two issues and believe this impingement on my spine is causing this sensation. It doesn't cure it but it certainly helps to know WHY this has been happening. I love your video! It was so informative, Please make many more of these!!!!!!! I will be a subscriber for life!

I am so happy to find out what this is I've been experiencing this annoying thing for some time, and I couldn't figure what was causing it, I thought maybe nerve damage from back surgeries I've had, when it flairs up it itches like hell! drives me crazy! I use anything that can reach back there to scratch, and some Cortisone Cream, then it will just go away until next time. Thank you so much for the video.

Well this explains a lot. I had this for about 3 years. I probably have some scratch scars. Eventually it left. I have a few other spots that itch for no apparent reason.

Wow !! Thank you for sharing the information on this condition. I have wondered so many times what this itch l get is. Now l know. I've had it on and off for years, thankfully not so acute as needing medication. I have been able to use "mind over matter" to stop it. I did read that a persistent itch could be cancer related, not wishing to alarm anyone !! Your description of this kind of itch is deffinately correct for me. Thank you again

Since being physically hit and put up on top of a hood of a car; later diagnosed with fibromyalgia, I have had sudden itching of back, chest, legs arms at different intervals and distance in time between. Have had allergy tests done and I am allergic to many, many things. I thought it was that, but this seems logical to what I am probably experiencing some of the time. Can drive you a bit nutty and is very uncomfortable especially when you think you have taken care of it and five minutes later to a half hour or so it’s back bothering you. Thanks explains much, good presentation.

Astonished to find this video. Fortunately I have found a chiropractor who, not only doesn't think I'm crazy, he has been treating me through a very gentle form of myofacial release. It's based on vectoring and is part of my treatment for chronic Lyme disease. Thank you for posting. I will share this video with him. It may help in adjusting how he treats this particular issue.

Thank you for this information! I have had this for almost 7 years so far. I tore my left rotator cuff and had shingles on the same area (my scapula). Since it is primarily caused by a nerve issue, I assume the torn rotator to be the culprit.

Like so many commentors I feel so relieved to see this has a name!!! I thought I was crazy! Mine came in early age though. My 20's. The itching was CRAZY, in that exact spot, with intense heat. Through the years it comes and goes. Less as I age, actually, but what worsened was the shoulder pain and spasms on that side. I don't know if they're related? But I have INTENSE to small spasms and a deep muscle pain, neither of which seem to accompany the itching necessarily, or even each other. Never seems to be a pattern or chronic "reason".

This fits perfectly. I get it about once a month on average. I took to calling it 'the fairy with a feather spot', but notalgia paresthetica is much more impressive. It should give me a head start over everybody else at parties.
