@@04tundradc48 I just picked up an 04 with 208k miles. Timing and water pump replaced at 189k. Any suggestions on other things I should do to make it long travel capable?
First gen Tundras are so underrated. These things had damn near lexus like build quality unlike the plastic cheap interiors and massive panel gaps of the generations after it. This was peak toyota build quality.
I have a 2005. Bought it from my mother when my dad died in 2012. It only had 33K on it. Now in 2023 it only has 88K, so neither one of us drives many miles. At this rate, it will hit 100K during it's 20th year birthday, maybe. It was my dad's last vehicle, so to me it's kinda special.
1st gen Tundras are the sweet spot and yours sure looks mint! Right size, right amount of power, it just does everything so well. I had one for years and as much as I love my 2nd gen Tundra I prefer the 1st gen for everyday use.
@@Garagetopics spot on. I put helper air bags in the rear of mine and it made it a much better tow rig (I used to tow my race car on an open trailer behind it and the air bags levelled it out nicely and helped stabilize the whole package while hauling since I could run proper tongue weight and not have the nose of the truck in the air).
I think what you’ve done with this Tundra is amazing. Almost as amazing as finding a Tundra like this in the first place! After an exhaustive search with many long days driving across several states, I must give up on my Tundra search. Everything I find is rusted out, high miles, or the paint is completely gone from baking in the sun. Worst of all is the many dealers that lied to me about the condition of these cars before I spent my time driving. I’m extremely disappointed I’ve yet to find a gem like this one.
Perfect size! AND, it's wide enough for 4X8 sheets of plywood and drywall. An actual work truck. Your first video helped me decide to buy one, and I am VERY happy. Thanks!
Beautiful truck , congrats. have had an 06 Access cab for 6 years with about 125000 miles. paid 8k cdn (6k us) lol Had the radiator, water pump and timing belt replaced . Have driven from Toronto to Phoenix a bunch of times with 0 issues . Love the truck and will pass it down the food chain to my grandson in a couple of years . Love the videos and really useful info. Many thanks.
4 years ago I bought a 2002 Tundra double cab with 300K miles for a farm truck. I feel like I'm working out of a Lexus the interior is so nice. It is one tough truck though. HARD use, but it don't care, keeps right on humming.
My ex girl friends father is selling me his 05 Tundra with 78,000 miles. Garaged since the day he bought it new. I'm excited like a little kid. I'm straight up going to copy what you did. Sorry, but it looks like exactly what I want mine to look and ride like. He was going to sell it to me right before covid, then couldn't find the truck he wanted. Been waiting a while, but its finally go time! Appreciate your vids!
Just now reading this. A 2005 with 78k miles? Jump on it. Have the 2003 Tundra 4.7 liter. The motor is amazing. Biggest downsides to the truck front brakes wear out quickly, in any slick conditions the rear end is like butter and fuel economy is abysmal, otherwise jump on it.
Between you and my brother, I decided to buy an 04 also. DC 4x4 limited. In under a year I lifted it with a Dobinson's kit, all the required maintenance too, and new stereo and front speakers. This is the first truck I've owned, and I love it. My previous car, a 2002.5 24v GTI, I had for 17 years and only sold it cause I moved to Hawaii and could only justify taking one car (decided to keep my 1990 GLI). So I'll have this truck for a long time.
I've had my 06 for 3 years at this point and it has held up amazingly. 265k miles, and all i've changed is the oil, windshield wippers, and tires. I did add an touchscreen system and bluetooth audio, as well as black out all the chrome emblems and new headlughts to update the look. Definenlty the best mid-sized truck ever made!
Love these trucks. Mine has over 200k and only "issue" I've had in the last 5 years is the tailgate handle. Easy 30 minute fix and good to go. Most my friends have newer Rams and Fords with something going wrong every year.
Lol I have an ‘04 with 140k and my handle broke a couple weeks ago too. My truck is a phantom gray limited and my factory handle was color matched. I ordered an aftermarket from eBay and just slapped it on. Took 10 mins and I didn’t even paint it.
I have had mine over 4 years now. Same truck double the miles as yours it’s a beast. If your in search of one in the northern states find one that had the frame recall done. Amazing vehicle I’ll never sell it.
I have a 2006 XSP (a double cab 4x4 SR5 with leather) and it's got 170k miles and it's honestly so comfortable, long but maneuverable, it's not all boxy, i personally like the rounder look... I'm very happy with it even though it only gives me 15 mpg
For the tailgate, take off the cover and check to make sure the latch isn’t rubbing. I had to grind just a hair off my latch to stop it from rubbing against the tailgate support weld.
I have a 2022 on order and I've decided to keep my 2006. It is exactly like yours only salsa red, and I copied your exact Bilstein set up front and rear. I have 170k and like you, I have not had any issues since I've owned it from 2008. Best damn trucks!
I just picked up mine with 193K for $10k in mint condition!!! It is not 4WD but I don’t need it since it’s mostly for hauling trash from flips I’ll be doing. I have a 100 series for the 4WD adventures. 😊 you are spot on as this truck size feels perfect!
Just bought one recently same color installed fuel rims on it wrapped with nitto ridge grapplers -12 off set and icon stage 2 lift and I gotta say it looks beautiful! Best thing about it is that I only have 58k miles!
My parents bought the first gen tundra 06 new we’ve had it ever since, 16 years later hardly any serious issues and standard maintenance has allowed it to 253k long miles and still going
Thanks for the update! Glad you're still enjoying your Tundra! This coming March, will mark 2 years that is I'll have had my 04 double cab SR5 Tundra. I have loved every minute of owning this truck. Such a well made vehicle, and the size is perfect to me. Your early video comparison between the Tacoma is one of reasons I went for the Tundra. I was leaning hard for a second gen Tacoma double cab but the prices at the time were higher than what I could stomach. So glad I went with the Tundra. These first gen Tundras are awesome trucks. Thanks, God bless.
I have an 06 since 2010 and the only thing I have replaced are twice the battery, three times the tires and every 5 thousand miles the oil that’s it ., right now the odometer reads 107 k miles so I m planning to keep it for many more years the best pick up truck I have own!
I have a 2013 Tundra Platinum. It has 188k miles. Great truck i purchased in 2014 with 19k on it. They definitely hold their value. Mine came with a body lift and 33" tires with an 18" wheel. You can't go wrong with a Toyota!!
I have a 2006 SR5 2 wheel double cab I bought used with 33k on it in 2009 for 14k. Never did anything to it until last year when a number of maintance items needed done after 118k , Spent 4k on it , sterring, timing belt, new suspension etc. Was well worth it. Never one engine issue. It currently has 123k on it. Frame is clean living in GA. The truck has always been outside and still looks great, I do keep it waxed. The black window trim has fadded alot and I'll probably paint it this year. The front orignal head lights are getting foggy so I'll probably upgrade to the new ones you used. My wife keeps telling me to buy a new tundra but I love this truck other than the gas milage. My guess is I can still sell it for 11- 12k. The new Tundras just have not won me over yet.
I have an ‘06 Limited with 138K on the odometer. I bought it brand new after being tired of selling my Chevy trucks every 5 years. It’s been very reliable although I have had a few issues (A/C compressor, power steering rack and tranny mount) but all worth it. I’m fixing to put some money in it now because I’m never getting rid of it. It’s white so the paint is shot, needs new leather on the front seats, new Bluetooth stereo system, needs the lower ball joint repair. I would get in this thing right now and drive across the country.
I have a 2004 just like yours 288,00 miles, I just had someone hit the front corner around $6000.00 damage the Insurance was talking about totaling it . but it was all cosmetic. So I had it fixed. I just had the timing belt and water pump changed every 90,000 miles for the forth time. There is no way I could replace it with anything better.
Thanks for sharing your Tundra knowledge. Bought an 06 Tundra last weekend and was super pumped. Then I found your channel where you say watch out for rust on the frame. After looking again they sprayed over the rust. Bad purchase and now I’m trying to figure out what to do!
Contact your local Toyota dealer. They should probably replace the whole frame if it’s bad enough. The frames were recalled So they should do it for free. Definitely contact the dealer
I’m currently on my second FGT. Unfortunately I’ve had issues with the secondary air injection system on both. I put a Hewitt Tech bypass on my current ‘06 DC. That helped for a few months and then the bypass caused issues with my mass airflow sensor.
I have an 04 that I’ve had for 13 years and I just recently replaced the radiator a couple weeks ago. I like those headlights! Can you tell me what brand they are and where you ordered them? Thanks.
The first gen tundras are awesome. Of course they are older and so they don't have all the high tech stuff compared to the new ones but i love mine. All trucks used to be that size. Then the companies starting going crazy building huge beasts and wanting $60k. Bring the old ones back! And I’m in the market for one soon so if you getting tired of it let me know 😂
Hey man I absolutely love that bed cover you have. I have the same exact truck as you with a tonneau cover that is all one piece. how do you like your bed cover?
Bro my dad bought a 06’ darell Waltrip edition tundra, only (2,000) made. I’m 24 now it’s been my truck for the passed 2 years, has 169k miles never had to do shit besides oil change, tire rotation blah blah.
Is a 2005 Toyota tundra double cap with 203k miles for 5500$ a good deal ? Inside is mint condition except for some bad body damage but it’s patched up
Got an ‘06 DC Limited, drove it of the lot new in ‘07. At 160k now. 4.7L V8 motor n trans will go for fucking ever if you do the scheduled maintenance. Edit - When the stupid smog fans go out - they will eventually - get a bypass kit from Hewitt Technologies. It’s like the one dumbass move Toyota made engineering the 4.7. They’re stupid expensive and the aftermarket ones fail within a year. Thank me later
Yep I have read about those pumps going bad. Unfortunately I'd be willing to bet that company that overrides the system may have a hard time fighting off the govt based on all the diesel emissions nonsense going on
@@Garagetopics Maybe, maybe not. The emissions fans only have one job, to heat up the catalytic converters faster on cold starts. They literally only run or effect emissions for the first 90 seconds of run time, and only if the vehicle has been off for 8hrs or more. Anyways, they’re available now and work great to keep the fans off, clear the check engine light, and get you out of limp mode.
@@ToyotaNutjobI’ll take the VVTI that came in the ‘05-‘06. The Hewitt kit is a small price to pay for the extra ponies and that beautiful sound when you put your foot in it. Doubly so when you throw a cold air intake on and get those induction sounds 🤌🏻
1st Gen Tundra's are great, until you get denied for full coverage insurance. No one wants to write a policy for a 20 year old truck that's ready for a classic tag
@@Garagetopics I'll check but this was from an insurance broker that deals with a few different companies in PA. I was told the only way I can get full coverage insurance on a car 20 years old is if I put a classic tag on the truck and then that limits how many miles I can drive it per year. Its disturbing because I only have 42k on the odometer
I have an ‘04 myself…have had for almost 8 years. The thing is still a beast. Gotta hang onto it.

Good video. I have a 2003 Tundra with 320,000km. Still going strong only issue is the rust! Where did you get the headlights? I would like to finally replace mine. Thanks
All trucks used to be that size. Then the companies starting going crazy building huge beasts and wanting $60k. Bring the old ones back! And I’m in the market for one soon so if you getting tired of it let me know 😂
Bro, I just love your truck, let me ask you something, when you did your lift kit, did you also add a center bearing drop kit for the drive line?
Thanks! No I did not. I'm right at 2.5 inches of lift to avoid a lot of the negative impacts of a taller lift
What lift do you have on this truck? What size tires?
Hey man I absolutely love that bed cover you have. I have the same exact truck as you with a tonneau cover that is all one piece. how do you like your bed cover?
I loved it at first, but I just got a simple roll up cover and it is a lot easier to live with. It does rattle with wind but no sound in the cabin
@@Garagetopics do you happen to still have the folding one?
@@Garagetopics and what did you not like or like about the folding one?
Love my 06’ just hit 93k.
Wheel and tire setup? Is your truck lifted?
What brand is the headlights again? I got an 05 Phantom Gray DC, but mines 2wd. Need new headlights. Last ones I bought, it wouldn't adjust
Yita is the brand on Amazon, I had some issues adjusting these as well but they have held up great
Hi, was wondering what size lift kit and brand? What size tire u running? Thanks
How did you paint the grille?
The new tacos are about the same size, but when I wind out the V-8, there is no substitute.😁
def not the same inside. the tacoma’s are so cramped
I need a 1st gen. Double cab with the 6.5 bed.
Where did you get the headlights ?
What wheel and tires are those?
Gotta get a pre 04 tundra those are the most reliable dont have it
@@ToyotaNutjobI’ll take the VVTI that came in the ‘05-‘06. The Hewitt kit is a small price to pay for the extra ponies and that beautiful sound when you put your foot in it. Doubly so when you throw a cold air intake on and get those induction sounds 🤌🏻
What was the Toyota truck model that needed the frames replaced?
Where can I get a bed cover for an 06 tundra 6.5foot bed?!!
How much did it cost you to do your timing belt?
Only problem is that everything you do a bolt is definitly gonna break
Link for the headlights!
I have the same truck bro I love mine too
Can you provide a link to that tonneau cover?
I bought mine used, but I believe this is the one amzn.to/3YWUVev
How much NOS should I run on my 05?
The government recommends the year vehicle divided by 20, so just over a 100 shot 💯💯💯
For sale,right?
Got the link for the headunit ?
Oops! Just added the link to the description
@@Garagetopics no problem, thanks !!
Decided not to sell it?
It’s a proper 1/2 ton truck.
what kind of muffler do you have on it?
Get the true duals no resonator or mufflers. Nasty.
1st Gen Tundra's are great, until you get denied for full coverage insurance. No one wants to write a policy for a 20 year old truck that's ready for a classic tag
Get another insurance company to write you up a policy, that sounds ridiculous
@@Garagetopics I'll check but this was from an insurance broker that deals with a few different companies in PA. I was told the only way I can get full coverage insurance on a car 20 years old is if I put a classic tag on the truck and then that limits how many miles I can drive it per year. Its disturbing because I only have 42k on the odometer
“Kinda low mileage for a tundra” yea no kidding, I can hardly find these under 200-250k in my area 😂
Bro your camera makes me feel like I am on drugs for real, what even is that auto focus/stabilization
