  • This bowl blank was used to test out different bowl gouge grinds and I could use it as a jam chuck but this really fits this blank so you see in this video how I work without let camera rolling.
    Enjoy

    I've said it before so I hope you don't tire of hearing it. I love watching a production turner work! You, Richard Raffan, Alan Batty, Dennis White and Bill Jones are special. You all can turn craft into art but your heart is in the craft.

    No matter how often I see you turn at 'normal speed' I keep being surprised at well, the speed! A lovely bowl indeed. One of the first times, if not the first time I can recall you using 120 grit, that beech must have put up a fight. Thanks for another educational and entertaining video.

    Thanks tommi,
    Really quick and easy bowl.
    How long do you take start to finish, raw timber to finished bowl, say about 200 mm by 70 mm, 8 inch by 3 inch.
    Can you show in great detail a video on just making a quick foot . 100 mm foot for a 250mm bowl. Finished foot so that you don’t have to go back to refinish or recheck..
    How different would that be for a production run of small bowls about 100 mm by 60 mm.
    I feel that I’m taking too long to complete my bowls. I’m leaving mortise in bottom, which doesn’t look as good as large tenon with small chucking rim. When I try to do large tenons small rims, I have problems with turning inside of bowl, either tear out or bowl off lathe. Could be taking too big a bite of wood.
    Anyway video with good descriptions of tools and angles of bites on wood.
    You make it look so simple

      Hi Greg,sorry for late response, 200x80mm bowl would take if its dry wood around 12-16minutes, depends on wood as well.... But usually around 12mm to do it if the wood wants to cooaperate....if I rush it I could make it even faster but I don't like working like that.
      Same thing goes for cutting foot on bigger or smaller bowls, you can leave it straight sided,small dovetail or round foot(bead).... For vibrations,I would say that maybe you haven't cut the foot correct and the jaws haven't seated properly and then it can vibrate.
      I would always go for tenon instead of recees on bowls, even on plates and platters if I had the jaws big enough.
      I'll do a video on this,its a good topic

  • @turningwiththewoods

    Question for you - a lot of turners like to hollow from the outside leaving the inner mass. Do you always go from the inside first or just with dried pieces?

    • @tomislavtomasicwoodturning
      @tomislavtomasicwoodturning  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Its just a different way, mass in the bottom is helpfull if the bowl wants to warp rapidly,and if I go thin then I would go from outside in.... Hope it make sense but on usually stable pieces it doesn't really matter in my opinion

    • @turningwiththewoods
      @turningwiththewoods 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tomislavtomasicwoodturning thx. that is what i figured. i just tend to always go from the outside and leave mass on the middle and then go down in levels.
