I'm building a snack bar countertop for Pilot Lake Campground. Now you got me thinking about building a timber frame ping pong table for the camp. Thanks a lot! 😁
Draw bore dowels are AMAZING! As an exercise I made a drill press and bench vise stand using construction wood with draw bore doweling and no glue at all. That table was solid as a rock for 20 years before moving to my new home shop made it "surplus". But the new owner is still enjoying it and it's still solid as the day it was built.
That is one fine looking table. Looks strong too. Should withstand more than a few seasons of teen aged campers. Well done. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Real nice. It'll take some real work to wreck that beast. This summer's campers: "Challenge accepted!" I recently built a timber framed trash bin with weather-treated 2X4s & 1X4s that were still wet. Your joinery turned out a lot better than mine.. Even so, I've still got the best looking trash bin in the neighborhood, so there's that going for me.
Pretty amazing work, James! Really well done! 😃 About the hard wax finish, I wonder if we could make something like that at the shop. You know? Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
I think it was Groucho Marx who called the game G nip G nop, 2 syllables, hard g sound, kind of like guh.... I have never been able to say ping pong since, and it is ping pong spelled backwards... Did you make the shuffle board table in the back ground?
Would that finish be a good choice for a workbench? I am building a new one out of white ash for the top and red oak for the base. Was thinking of just going with blo but that finish looks great. Nice job.
Might have been better to make the frame a foot smaller in each direction and have the tops hang over 6". It would be less in the way of the feet and knees.
I think that "belt and suspenders" might have been the expression that you were looking for, or "belt and braces" as it is on this side of the pond. Unless of course there is something that I am missing, in which case please let me know what an eejit I am.
Looks very strong 👍but the issue here is: Normally ping pong table's front legs are a bit inside the table. But the one you build, the legs start almost where the player hits the ball and there might be a big chance that when the player needs to hit the ball when he/she is closer to the table, the players leg will hit the leg of the table. Especially those 45 degree angle support pieces that are in front will not be comfortable when playing... Check the other playing table's legs in that room, they are good examples for how game table's legs should be build! Further then that, it looks perfect 👏👏
The build's great, as always. The rods, however, um… I am afraid of them. They really should have a safe failure mode IMHO. Especially with teens running around.
Yes and yes. The expansion and contraction due to heat is almost identical. The bond is far stronger then the wood itself. in most cases it is a far superior adhesive then any PVA. Epoxy is usually more flexible, better at gap filling, better water resistance, and controllable open time.

Such a great build!! Love how it turned out!

My teens will put this to the test for sure! I'll let you know in a few months how it's holding up!

Great project completed with hand tools!
That is a beautiful piece of furniture!
I did think of some not very funny comments to make but decided to just shut up and appreciate what you did there. Well done!
That went back and forth.

the name "hard Wax" is a bit confusing as it is way more then a wax oil thinner mix. it is closer to an epoxy that looks like a wax finish.
I was wondering if this was going to come out. Thanks so much.
First furniture project to finish in the new shop.
Thanks for sharing.
Great work, James!
Table Tennis is cool fun. Hours of bouncing around a table. LOL. Great build James. Love it.
Nice project, thanks James! ❤
Great stout project as always. Did anyone notice the missing clogs?
Great job!
Thanks
This is pretty sweet!
Thanks for sharing that!, good work and fun watching!
Very nice looking table! Leave it to teens to find a way to destroy it, though! The rod net holders may become known as the "Impalers".
Thanks James, great project
I'm sure that will last forever!
Love draw bores
I remember you talking about it before but could you remind me what those blue clamps used with the notched 2x4s are called again ?
those are old beam clamps. th-cam.com/video/RvTgV32QJuo/w-d-xo.html
@@WoodByWrightHowTo excellent, thank you very much.
Nice!
So modest James. We know you're an Olympic gold Metalist in ping pong 🧐
Well the chamfers are what separates us from the animals after all...

What's the weight capacity of the long stretcher? My intuition says such a long run would be weak in the center without a middle leg.
There is still 4"X 2" worth of Red oak with a span of 6 feet between diagonals. That is more then strong enough.
People used to build "tables" as strong & heavy as that in bomb shelters during Cuban Missile Crisis

sure. I am actually thinking of using it for that on my next one.
love it, once again what's the name of the finish?

Nice build. Where did you get the OSHA approved shop socks? I have a pair of steel toes flip flops for my shop. 😂

So, this is for full contact Olympics ping pong?😂 I got my first “first” view at 60 thanks!

Osage orange bats, lignum vitae bats, live oak bats?
"pants and suspenders"...seems to be the British version of the idiom?

I love it. But I don't get the dad joke at the end... Pool balls? Love the base though

Strong table - but not so good for table tennis - it should overhang to allow short game.
Second Comment 😎😎😎
Epoxy on a timberframe? I suppose only time will tell.
belts and suspenders!
@@WoodByWrightHowTo You hope.
There is no downside to adding it. Only possible upsides.
@@WoodByWrightHowToI am dubious. Is cured epoxy stronger than the wood? Does epoxy have the same coefficient of expansion as the wood?
