Always run your grinder or file over the coils. They could look copper but most modern ones these days are copper colour coated aluminium. Because of the usual disappointment these days of finding aluminium windings in the dryers, washing machines and other appliance motors, I've opted to sell them as electric motors to the yard. My yard buys electric motors for 80c a kilo which adds up over time.
use cutting wheel to cut vertically down the center of each coil,, then use a chisel or a flat head screwdriver flip the wheel over and pry the copper off
