- As chatter about a polar vortex spreads on social media, KHOU 11 meteorologist Pat Calvin breaks down what this Arctic phenomenon could mean for Houston.
He’s a good teacher. Give him a raise.Remember this is winter and winters get cold. You should prepare no matter where you live.
Not to compare, but the last time the local weather professionals told us not to listen to social media or people on TH-cam, Harvey dumped 50+ inches of rain on our city. If you wanna get a few things to be prepared just in case then great, if not, that’s on too. Simple as that.
Amen geoengineering watch says that all weathermen are under a gag order so they're probably not allowed to tell us the complete truth because then they wouldn't be able to damage our property and our lives which day is actually a group of evil rich Mastermind fools that want depopulation.
You're an idiot. Track the weather yourself, moron.
This guy deserves a raise !!
I feel like I just watched an introductory lesson on weather reporting. Thanks for the great information.
@@rickintexas1584 School time 😇
Its hard to forget what happened during the last PV event. I just hope Ercot can keep the lights on!
Oh man isn’t that the truth ❤
Yea and Far West Texas gets 80 inches of rain a year.
They won’t…
No, they will not, the grid will fail when the other affected states start drawing power from the Texas grid. Watch the TVA: TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY ,grid collapse 😅😢🎉😮
@@LisaTurner-d1b haha! Exactly! Count on power outages. We got 5 ft of snow and -14 where I an in far west Texas.
Great explanation of polar vortex and upcoming change in weather. Thank you 👏🏻
There is nothing wrong with getting prepped now just in case things change just before it gets real bad so that you are fighting everyone at the grocery stores and home depots!! Better safe than sorry, like last time!! Oh by the way, there is nothing wrong with getting information from social media channels. Weatherman plus is a great and accurate channel!
Yes Mark is a blessing 🙌, he's been consistently correct.
Also, Mitch West weather👍🏿. He's been on this for the past 2 weeks and a good wholesome family guy
Love him!!!!
Weatherman Plus on You Tube is a very reliable source. Other reliable weather channels on You Tube: Ryan Hall, Y'all, Mr. Weatherman, Mitch West Weather, Max Velocity Weather.
Pray Texans are safe this time 😢
Just stay inside when need to, if you need to walk your dogs wear more clothes, earmuffs and gloves.
@@SMBiggestFanpeople’s barns were caving in and being buried by snow. hundreds of thousands of cattle were at risk. some lost their entire herds. it’s bigger than what people can control.
It's called winter. Deal with it.
Texas prep now I've been following this for a couple of days and it seems to keep getting worse and I would recommend the weathermanplus for you're information
I agree
Ercot forgot about rolling black outs for my little town in 2021 and we froze for 5 full days. I cannot deal with sleeping in my car with 2 dogs and a cat for 5 days again. It's an econo sized car, which is why the gas held out. Thank God for the heater.
Buy a small generator or a propane heater. Be proactive. Don't depend on anyone but yourself. You should have learned this already.
Best explanation of Polar Vortex!
This guy needs a raise
The time to prepare is now. Better to be ready than not 🤷♂️
excellent job explaining the probabilities and maybes and maybe nots!! In this epoch of social media, I very much genuinely loathe, genuinely hate, and genuinely despise the many clickbait channels that clickbait and fear monger and take advantage of so many unfortunately misinformed or uneducated people when talking about stuff like this. no i am not a meteorologist, but the spectrum of probabilities and the concept of probability of course applies to many different subjects and sciences
I rebuke any abnormal cold weather this season in Jesus name.
Yes. But ask in His will.
@@bluelight6520 you have a severe mental illness. In Jesus' name.
bet you wont be doing that when spring rolls around😑

Are you serious 😢
Excellent explanation, thank you
Has Ted Cruz reserved suites in Cancun yet?
It will be Cabo San Lucas this time. That way it doesn't rhyme with his name.

So, 😮wait to make preparations until it gets really cold so then we really know when to act and run to the stores and get supplies plus groceries .
Love this comment
I don't understand why people go buy groceries like for a month's worth when it's only a 2-3 day event. You'll see people getting a full cart or two.
Maybe loss of power and maybe go without for a while like we did for Beryl.
lol what
Get what you need now. If everyone waits until the MSM to let them know it’s time to prepare it’s too late
Remember 2021 it was cold then and everyone said what you are saying now! if in doubt plan ahaed
I don't care if it's cold. I'm a southern boy and I don't care for cold weather but I can deal with it. As long as the electricity stays on.😢
Don’t count on ele system
Latest model runs are showing cold temperatures with a winter storm for central and south central Texas next Thursday where he had the graphic up showing 50° high temps. Yes, this could change come next model run but I don’t understand why meteorologists wait until 2 days out to get everyone prepared. Ever since 2021, people fear this type of weather. Atleast tell them that computer models are hinting at a storm instead of showing cloudy mild temperatures.
This is for Houston, not Central or even South Central Texas. If you want more accurate temps for those regions, look at those stations predictions. Houston at least 100 miles from the closest region you are referring to.
@ it’s for Houston also. Wintery mix/ice possible with snow the more west you go.
Thank you for this. Well done
That was really helpful information! Thank you for explaining this!
Thank you for giving such a clear explanation
Houston Specific is appreciated
Note; there are close to2 million more people in Texas in 2024, than there were in 2021. The power grid will be extremely stressed!
I agree and I expect it to fail again 😢😢😢
Yikes!
I really enjoyed this explanation, it was very informative.
If another February 2021 occurs, Houston may have a problem again.
Excellent explanation, great job by the meteorologist!
Thank you for trying to help defuse mania and misinformation
I’m going to New York by the end of January. I need to know what the temperature will be like then.
I’m praying for no storms, I been in Houston too long now I no longer have my snow legs. 😅
Don't let the door hitcha where the Good Lord splitcha, Yanker!
Everyone needs to have storm supplies no matter which climate comes our way.
Thank you for the down to earth weather reports
Only question is will the Texas grid go down?
Of course .... that's a given. Sincerely, Houston
Can’t wait for the power to go out. Can finally use my new fire place 😄
Most definitely. That's what we need to prepare for.
I'll have my home ready. Will Texas have its power grid ready?
No
@@philliphall5198 D'oh! 😖 (That's what I thought.)
I live in Texas and never lost power
Where's David Paul?
Why are you deleting comments that disagree with you.
So you delete every comment?
There are a lot of models showing that there can be a heavy amount of snow in Texas. I mean, something can or can not happen. Just be prepared and safe.
Hopefully, it goes and stays in the East Coast. The South is already dealing with alot of weather changes lately
I put money that houston area is going get hit hard
Yep! because Pat is a horrible reporter'

Houston has been slammed all of 2024. We've been without partial power since the tornadoes
At the beginning bro sounded like he was worried about becoming insignificant.
Weatherman Plus, Max Velocity and The Goat: Ryan Hall ya’ll
@jlynnc9559 Weatherman Plus for the win!
No offense but the social media weather people warn us of these events way in advance using the same prediction software that our local news uses. But the social media weather people don’t talk to us like we’re unable to understand big scary words like polar vortex. The big difference is they don’t try to control what the public gets to see. The world and the weather have changed, we like getting potential disaster warnings as soon as the models show it.
So , it's cold , I just turned the Heat on but only have about $30.00 LEHIP Left . My SSI got 2 % but they took away $9.00 of the $120.00 SNAP , I switched from real Medicaid and Medicare with Extra Help to an HMO PPP to get OCT for some Food Money , but Now I will no longer get Heart Surgery 24\7 without Pre Approval . It's basically living on a little less than $1.000 a Month .
Why would you turn the heat on when it’s 68 outside? 😂
@@WakandaleezaRazzhow do you know where he lives to be 68 degrees? He could live in Maine or Southern California. He never said he lives in Texas.
I feel you, praying for us on limited income 🙏🏻
You are a great meteorologist
Houston Texas,Baytown TX, and Pasadena TX Let's get prepared and get MRE meals just in case the power goes out.
Thank you!
Doubt we will see any, but if the stars align and the vortex makes it far south enough and mixes with the Gulf Stream to give us snow. That would be nice.
🙏🙏🙏🙏
Happy New Year stay safe stay warm and stay strong 🕊️
Dude have a little compassion. Those of us who lived through the winter storm2021 in Houston get scared
He's just trying to make people understand that this is all probability based and we're a bit far out of be sure. Because people hear one thing about what could happen and start telling everybody it IS happening. Then if it doesn't happen "oh the weather people are always trying to scare us" and don't listen to them at all. 🙄
I feel sorry for meteorologists and scientists in general having to deal with the decline in education amongst the population.
Thanks for the explanation.👍
Awesome forecaster!
Same weather man says the bolt red will be in Texas all the way to Mexico
Not cold but freezing temperatures
We need to take if our houses the pipes
This city was not built to freezing temperatures
Plus water electricity trash internet may be interrupted
We need to prepare - yes enjoy today but prepare for the future
I knew in advance and have been preparing already. We're grilling up meats on New Years Eve. Hurricane Beryl we lost all fridge and freezer food.
Thank you.
he just covering it up bc he knows we’re gonna get it
What's the Over Under on Centerpoint? 💰💰
😂😂😂😂
To expect failure while they're on their mega yachts
Great explanation of a polar vortex but you did not once discuss the rain and freeze that is expected in Houston and surrounding areas. I don't have to be a meteorologist to predict the weather once its raining.
6:22-6:24 2nd week of December you mean January
I think he misspoke when talking about the probability distribution map. I believe it is an aggregate showing probabilistic bias meaning saturation indicates how high the probability is, color indicates bias with respect to average temperature. Solid purple being the high probability of air much colder than average, and solid red/orange indicating strong probability of temps above average. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
So superficial. Local news metereologists talk to people like we are children
I been here possible massive snow 2 back to back ❄️ Storm coming to east Texas and extreme cold weather ❄️🥶💯...
Pretty scary when the meteorologist don’t even know why the polar vortex gets dislodged sending arctic air to the Deep South. You said it was a wavy jet stream that’s causing the cold, that’s not true. The polar vortex moves from the arctic because of stratospheric warming at the arctic. Air that is 60 to 70 miles high warms over the polar vortex and arctic which begins the step down process of sending arctic air to the south. Our coldest arctic cold outbreaks come from this stratospheric, negative oscillation, a blocking pattern in Canada trapping cold air to the south, and it usually takes 4 to 6 weeks as it works it way down from the stratosphere and Canada. Multiple cold fronts starts the step down process with each colder than the last. This is what happened in February of 2021 with the historic cold snap over most of the lower 48. The jet stream does buckle when we get arctic intrusions but it’s the result of a stratospheric warming event and cold dense air rushing south not the other way around. Jet stream buckle doesn’t cause the cold, the cold causes the jet stream buckle to happen.
I`m already seeing people at the stores shopping like it`s the end of the world.
Exactly. For what! It's like a 2-3 day event and people buy like a month's worth of stuff 🤦♂️
@@jcmib7probably won’t even happen at all either
Thank you for explaining this
Get ready guys. This is now like 2021 february. Get the fireplace ready. We gonna be on deep freezing for some days.
Will Centerpoint keep power on Galveston Island?
The NLP is off the chain by the way. Are you a meteorologist
Seems like we’re getting a lot more of these than normal. I can’t put my finger on it, but I think there’s something going on with the climate.
The gulf stream is an ocean current, not an air current high in the atmosphere.
Soup season is here. Stay warm my friends.
Happy new year 🎆
The sad thing about this is that we don't believe the weather people.
Nice explanation about the airflows. The argument that other people sharing predictions/signaling that colder weather appears to be on the way because they're not living in the Houston area is a joke. You show predictions/details for other parts of the country!!! Are we supposed to ignore/distrust what you've been saying about their weather? And then, you seem to actually agree with what others have been showing!!! The same facts are widely available to those that want them. I understand that you don't want to alarm people unnecessarily, but, it *is* good to be aware of what has a decent possibility of happening so that if inclined, they are able to prepare now and not need it (potentially) versus trying to prepare when everyone and their dog is figuring out that it's going to get cold. Also, for those that are travelling during the timeframe of concern, finding out about it while they're away..... not good! And, then you also have people that will be travelling *into the affected areas* too. Don't talk about other commentators. I understand it's largely about variations from a 'normal' range for any given location. Just stick to the facts as you have them, acknowledge that the situation has variability involved, and present them in a way that provides a good public service. Oh, and, yeah, lets just pretend the good folk in Canada don't exist, eh? Lets just completely ignore that they deal with low temps that generally exceed those seen by the lower 48 by a fairly wide margin, and that even for them, this sort of storm can also be a significant impact on them too.
It's not a weakness in the jet stream that causes the polar vortex to come South. Look up the term Greenland block.
A "Greenland block" refers to a high pressure system that forms over Greenland, acting as a barrier that can disrupt the normal flow of weather patterns, often causing the polar vortex to shift southward and bringing colder air to regions like the eastern United States; essentially, the Greenland block "blocks" the polar vortex from following its usual path, diverting it towards lower latitudes.
Thankyou😊
It's headed toward Belize so look out, wear Long pants and shoes this week, lol. Don't forget the hoodie.
I lowkey don’t think we’ll have that much of the cold front over in Texas
The Texas power grid will fail, like last time
Texas gets its power from windmills 😅😅😮lmao
We are southwest near Houston
I wonder 💭 me in Florida get colder
January is mainly when Houston gets cold.
So it's true? Just show us the temps.
I'm just still waiting for winter to finally arrive
I checked the weather on my phone and it said next thursday it had a 75% of snoww
they really say "cold weather outbreak" dude its called winter. it gets cold or really cold
There's many different kinds of different weather in the winter, a polar vortex is one of many kinds of phenomena that happens in the winter where the temperature is far lower than normal.
Yeah… this is very different from the jet stream patterns on sm…
Smack talking social media influencers, then talks about watching the pretty colors.
Haven't seen an any weather almanac's predict anything other than a wetter winter and not as cold. For southeast Texas.
Let's see who predicts correctly.
Talking head leading people astray!
Prepare people
Prepare for a possible grid down
AND arctic ice is currently 26% more now than it was in 2012. AND rich people are still buying up multi million $$$ beachfront homes. AND atmospheric CO² has risen by only 0.05% since the beginning of the industrial revolution. AND there are many people who stand to benefit greatly from scaring people into thinking that we are about to melt the polar icecaps, glaciers etc and flood the world.
Other site have Jan 6 low of 32 Jan 9 low of 22 and Jan 10 low of 25. TV news is dead.
I guess Summer like weather in NorCal
I clicked on this video BECAUSE I live in Alaska, and it's nice when the weather map includes us. WHY ON EARTH DID YOU MISSSPELL TWO NATIVE VILLAGES, you put Anchorage very far away from it's actual location, and you completely ignore Wasilla, which is the 3rd largest town. Barrow DOESN'T EXIST. It is now Utavik, and the other one is Bethel, which has a population of about 15 people, please show weather information where the agriculture and humans are, Denali Park might be appropriate, but Alaskan Natives feel that using the incorrect names for their towns, is a form of cultural genocide. UTAVIK not Barrow. Okay?
A cold front in January. Wow.
Another reason to build a wall across the US/Canadian border, as high as the stratosphere. Im tired or the vortex of cold air
Lol it was 82 today in houston
Polar vortex is not scary, what’s scary is 100 plus degree temperatures with high humidity and power outages. That will kill you.
Put some clothes on when it’s cold
This video could have been shorter by half and been just as informative
This guy weathers.
A lot of SM also said that things aren't set in stone. Lol. Ok Houston
