People tend to forget about the SS soldiers who buried this stuff.. What the war ended and they just forgot all about those gold bars they buried? Long since dug up and melted down to prevent identification.. And can you blame them? I would do the same.. no way I'd have "found" any gold.. I'm sure there's plenty out there in those lakes just waiting to be found but I'm just sure a good bit was recovered by the people who buried it.

I'm from upper Bavaria and in the last days of the war there were first Wehrmacht soldiers and then US soldiers billeted in our family's farm stables. Rumors around the village have it since then that the Wehrmacht soldiers did hide gold and/or other valuable things around our property. But despite finding stuff like (regular) coins and buttons from uniforms we could find no gold... Yet😜😜😜

Yep. Other places too. About 25 years ago I was given a sword that was "liberated" allegedly on Okinawa. The veteran who gave it to me was adamant that was where he got it. (But I always suspected he had bought it post-War.) It was a real honor for me to get it in either case... However it looked to me like an NCO sword since the grip and sheath were very plain bamboo. The blade was mint though. I later took it to an expert who confirmed it was real, and that the blade was made in the late 1500s, judging by the markings (kanji?) on the hilt that were hidden by the grips. Apparently the officer (not NCO as I thought) had the grips and sheath made to take to modern combat, and left he original accessories at home. The blade itself was valued at over $2000 back then. Multiply that by the number of GIs who brought home trinkets in the post-war Occupation, and that alone is a significant amount of treasure. On another note. The Japanese had plenty of decades to rob the Koreans blind, and they did. So I don't worry too much about Japanese treasure being lost.

As we all know not everyone who served in World War II was a spotless Sterling hero in shining armor. I once met a man who had a direct connection to this. In Williamsport Pennsylvania, there used to be a Mister Donut coffee shop which later was turned into a Dunkin Donut coffee shop. it was in the Newberry part of town. I remember once a rather old man came in who my father knew and we were talking for a considerable length of time. From what I can recall I do believe he was 3rd Army. He said about how he in a company of men, intercepted a shipment of gold and loaded it up and either two or three large US Army trucks. They were not far from the Swiss border I understand and he is one of the leaders of this Expedition. Now at the time the man told us this he was 87, and the war was a long time ago and a long far Place away. He boasted about how there was a sergeant, an MP, who tried to fulfil his duty by making them stop when they were trying to illegally continue South outside of the jurisdiction covered by the third Army at that time. The reason I say he boasted about that is that his subordinates did not hesitate to shoot him down. He had some rather crudely dismissive things to say about the murdered sergeant. He talked about how they managed to get the trucks full of gold into Switzerland, after giving out a hefty amount to pay for that privilege, but still arrive with the bulk of it. there was this old man boasting about how he had over 14 million dollars in gold tucked away in a Swiss Vault somewhere that he had managed to Spirit Away during war and that he wasn't the only one who was similarly wealthy. I never met that man before or since and I just cannot quite remember his name. And since my father's been dead for about 3 years ...well, you can't ask him.
Bullion is harder to make disappear. But a lot of coins and smaller bars probably evaporated whenever it moved or changed hands. It's easy for a soldier, on either the obviously winning or loosing side by that point in the war, to rationalize "They won't miss a pocket full" while planning their future. Several pockets (or several dozen) later 3-4 tons magically becomes 1-2 tons.

Nazi artifacts sometimes turn up in the trash of my neighborhood (I'm a garbage man and look through the stuff sometimes). I found a German Merit cross, silver coins with swastikas on them, as well as a Nazi-looted Polish Coat of Arms from 1939. Only a matter of time until I find some of that elusive Nazi gold!
That was a hunting lodge? The last "hunting lodge" I was in was a one room log cabin with four cots, a square table, four straight backed chairs, a wood burning stove for heat/cooking and an ice chest to keep the beer cold. Guess I was born into the wrong strata of society. Anyway, keep up the great work, Mark. You never disappoint!
There should be a museum where people could come in and look and feel the giant gold bars of the past. No amount of handling could damage them, so visitors could have some good fun. I for one would easily pay 5 bucks for a 10 minute ticket.

Someone definitely got a good portion of it. Smaller portions were probably taken by troops as they came across it and probably some more was dumped in the lake or in a nearby hiding place. I would think that after a girl found a bar of gold and was permitted to keep it, some treasure hunters probably dove into that lake in search of more gold. When they put all that whole pile of loots together then you'd see how 6 or 7 tons of gold was insignificant in the larger scheme of things at the time. It wouldn't be too far out of the ordinary for them to say 'Hey Mac! How much do you think this pile weighs, exactly?' and throw out a number. How exactly did they come up with a weight? There should be an exact written description stating 'X-amount of gold bars weighing X-amount'. This guy says it was 6 tons and then another guy may have actually weighed it all and gotten a more accurate figure. My old man used to fix old military records and he'd always say it was a miracle anything got done due to how messed up all their records were.

One could make a career out of looking for Nazi gold. I would guess someone has already done that. I would that where one gold bar is there are bound to be others. The only problem is that Konigsee is an alpine lake so you would be limited to summer months with respect to searching. Also alpine lakes aren't exactly tropical or even subtropical in nature so you would need a good wet suit. As you said, "Good Luck"!
Well, I have to say I found that very interesting, in particular the footage of the cavalry unit. My Dad served in the 107th Cavalry in an M8 armored car. They didn’t find gold, but he did tell a story (one of the very few times he talked about the war...) about his unit finding a tunnel closed by two large steel doors, in the mountains of Bavaria. They blew them open, and found a wall of ice. They tried blasting it with satchel charges, and even shot it with cannon, but to no real effect. They reported the location, and moved on. They ended the war at Mad King Ludwigs castle, where they were billeted in luxury for a splendid time, before being pulled back to France to prepare to embark for Japan.
Soldiers clearly often looted valuables & weapons, a member of my own family coming back from India said that an announcement came over the tannoy, that prosecutions would take place, and a lot of valuables and weapons went overboard (not all though..!!)

I think the locals snaffled it. Then perpetuated the mystery (and protected themselves) by claiming it was lying on a lake bed somewhere.

It will be good to see again the lost treasures during war like Amber room ( a painting from room was sold by son of soldier couple of years back in USA) , paintings belonging to museums and private collectors now lying in someone’s attic or government Area 51

I have to visit Austria, hence the reason I'm learning German. It will be treat and I reckon I wanna live there after my visit.
One could make a career out of looking for Nazi gold. I would guess someone has already done that. I would that where one gold bar is there are bound to be others. The only problem is that Konigsee is an alpine lake so you would be limited to summer months with respect to searching. Also alpine lakes aren't exactly tropical or even subtropical in nature so you would need a good wet suit. As you said, "Good Luck"!

Well, I have to say I found that very interesting, in particular the footage of the cavalry unit. My Dad served in the 107th Cavalry in an M8 armored car. They didn’t find gold, but he did tell a story (one of the very few times he talked about the war...) about his unit finding a tunnel closed by two large steel doors, in the mountains of Bavaria. They blew them open, and found a wall of ice. They tried blasting it with satchel charges, and even shot it with cannon, but to no real effect. They reported the location, and moved on.
They ended the war at Mad King Ludwigs castle, where they were billeted in luxury for a splendid time, before being pulled back to France to prepare to embark for Japan.

Soldiers clearly often looted valuables & weapons, a member of my own family coming back from India said that an announcement came over the tannoy, that prosecutions would take place, and a lot of valuables and weapons went overboard (not all though..!!)
