Operation Bodysnatch 1945 - The Weirdest Monuments Men Mission

  • A special pre-Halloween treat is this strange but true story from the dying days of World War II in Europe. It involves the Monuments Men, four very important coffins, a salt mine and a secret operation with the grisly name of 'Bodysnatch'. I'm not going to say more, except watch and enjoy!

    The remains within were probably little more than remnants of bones. So it was more an exercise in moving large cumbersome objects i.e. the overly large coffins, which of themselves are unimportant.

    I will never forget the day i found out Hindenburg restet literally a few hundred meters from my home.
    I went to marburg as a university student so i didnt know Hindenburg was there. One day i watched a documentary on him at home whem they casually mentioned he rests in Marburg. I, in total suprise, rushed to the church and there it was. One of tje most famous german statesment laying in my neighbourhood like it was nothing

      I can understand why Germany would want to avoid even the slightest indication that they were honoring their Nazi past. I also understand that Hindenburg, as the leader of the Weimar Republic, was head-of-state when Hitler gained enough votes for his party, along with the support of lesser parties, to become leader of the Reichstag, which resulted in Hindenburg reluctantly allowing Hitler (whom he despised) to become Chancellor, which led to Hitler becoming the dictator who led the world into war. I also understand that by that time Hindenburg was a very old and frail man, who no longer had the strength or stamina to fight a protracted political battle against Hitler, regardless of his personal feelings. Long before the rise of Hitler, Hindenburg was a skilled soldier, diplomat and statesman. He should be remembered and honored for that. It is sad he isn't.

    I find it quite amazing, that the Americans gave this matter so much thought and treated the recovered remains with so much respect. They could have easily disposed of all of the remains and claim the insignia for themselves, but they chose not to. That’s just so great.

  • @landfair123
    @landfair123 6 ปีที่แล้ว +101

    At leased Americans have more respect for the dead. They didn’t have to go through all that trouble. The Russians would have just burned the bodies. The French and British probably would have put them in unmarked graves.

    St. Elizabeth's Church in Marburg is a fine example of medieval and almost pure Gothic construction. Even without the tombs of the Hindenburg's,, it's one of the few examples of a monumental 13th century church in Germany that survived the war intact. The church and nearby Marburger Schloss castle shouldn't be missed of you're a fan of medieval structures.

They were important personalities and it would have been a shame if their corpses weren't treated respectfully. It's good to know the Monuments Men were conscientious and considerate about their work. They did a really important job.

    Hollywood made a movie about these Monuments Men and fictionalized it. They took an incredibly interesting story and made up a bunch of fiction that was much less interesting then what actually happened. If you are going to butcher history using dramatic license I can still enjoy it (Braveheart) but to take an exciting, interesting story and make it boring I will never understand. I was stoked when I first heard they were making a monuments men movie and then I saw it with such regret.

    Nicely done! Now remember the beautiful and fashionable uniforms of the Prussian armies during the era of Frederick the great, or during WWI when Wilhem was the last German emperor. And the nwatch the horrible formal ceremonial uniforms of the Bundeswehr. Even on the ceremonial uniforms they have trousers where they put the ends of the legs into the boot... Even the east German Volksarmee had the decency to keep fancy ceremonial uniforms...

(This is expertly portrayed in the Adam Curtis documentary, On The Desperate Edge of Now.) So I suppose they didn’t want any part of contributing to potential shrines for patriotic feeling.
