I live in a country very similar to NZ, Norway. What I miss the most after coming home after visiting in-laws in Punjab is exactly the pulsating life that India is full of. It is so quiet and it's almost dead in comparison here. It is sometimes so bad that we go into a mini-depression after spending a couple of months in India. As I always have said, India's greatest asset is it's people, and the life and friendliness of most Indians. Missing India......

Absolutely loved the line from Manisha - "You will get bored if you don't have a purpose to live here". People in jobs (like myself) don't find it hard to live in NZ but parents visiting from India surely do after the initial week or two.
It is a terrible line if an excuse not to live in a country your husband lives in.

The country looks so clean, unbelievable! I wonder when and if ever my country is gonna look like this. It’s really distressing, disappointing and heavy to accept that I might never be to a place as clean as this in my entire life!
It is clean because the councils clean it and so do our people, we like for our country to be clean . You will see signs everywhere to keep NZ clean and tidy. Also you will find the biggest city Auckland is just that , a city with all it's trash but has clean areas too.

Karl actually specified that the assualts on Indians were predominantly higher due to the fact that a majority of corner store/dairy stores/petrol stations are owned by Indians and these stores are a main soft target for loser criminals. It is *not* a race issue but a convenience issue.
NZ definitely has racial issues, ethnocentrism and prejudice, especially towards the indigenous Māori but in this case, no, it's not a "attack Indians only" matter.

Welcome to NZ!! I can relate to what your wife said about sleeping... when I first came to nz I had trouble sleeping too lol.. so quiet that I could hear my stomach growling, rumbling & digesting all the food at night. I've been here for 10 years now I have trouble sleeping when I go back home to India because of all the noises and I find it so hard to ignore.

I've lived outside of NZ for almost 20yrs - USA, UK & Germany (still in the DE).
This has helped me to have a wider perspective on the positives & negatives of my home country.
To all commentors who describe NZ as beauty on steroids, unnervingly quiet, boring, peaceful, psychotic driving Land, horribly cold, 4 seasons in 1 day inconsistent weather, friendly people, dull news, too many sheep etc etc - you're all correct, it is all that. And I appreciate the honesty and gentle critique.
But there is one comment I can't stand: when people say NZ has no culture. This is incorrect, it has two -- that being the Māori culture & kiwiana, the hybrid kiwi culture of today. They're newborn babies compared to most world cultures but the people are trying their best to show off these newborns to all and tell em aaaalll about the little things that make these babies rock. 😊
Culture in NZ is not so much within the walls of ancient rocks and buildings, or art or music even, but in the *people* . And it is the *people* who you should be open to. So practice opening your heart in NZ. I can assure you, kiwis love opening their hearts to others. In fact, you'll never make it through a checkout counter without first being prompted to give a rundown of your life story here lol. And maybe say yes when a kiwi stranger invites you to a hangi or a dinner at their place or a visit to a marae etc.
That said, don't be silly, use your instinct and common sense when accepting invites as there are idiots and dodgy people in every country. 😉
I'm proud that as a kiwi, Karl adores India and shows respect to the people and culture etc as that's a beloved kiwi custom we all try to practice. To show kindness and friendliness to all humans, stranger and friend. Honestly, it's 50% because we like to be nice and 50% fear because if you don't, in time, somehow, mum is going to find out that you were rude to a friend of a friend of a friend's visiting 3rd cousin, and you're going to get a slap behind the head, a tongue lashing or a jandal flung at you when next you visit. 😉☺️

Great country & people. Very friendly & polite. Pretty cold too with great food and environment. I think if you like nature and space it’s perfect. Culture - NZ friend was one who taught me a lot about great pop culture!
Hi. I saw another video from him which highlighted violence towards Indians living in NZ and I got very discouraged about even visiting NZ. I am from Trinidad in the Caribbean, but some of us here are of Indian descent or mixed with European and African. So why are Indians targeted and abused like that in NZ? I surely didn't expect this!
@@gabriellewilliams396 one has to expect that in every country - racists exist. It's not specific to any culture or country and if one is truly honest with themselves, we are all just a teeny bit racist. E.g we tend to assume that our own culture and people are the most accomplished and the best examples of the human race...to some extent. 😉
As for the ethnocentric and racist abuse Indians and Asians suffer in NZ, well this is more about societal prejudices of the "other", socioeconomic standings and statistical probabilities and little about the Indian culture.
Case in point: there is a higher % of Indians who own and operate corner store/dairy/convenience stores in NZ than any other ethnicity. They are small businesses targeted by scummy individuals wanting a quick buck as they're manned by Indian families who usually provide very little resistance during a robbery. This skews the perception that they're being targeted for being Indian when it is most likely because they are seen as easy targets by criminals.
Of course this doesn't answer for attacks outside these businesses but I can only assume that they are:
- partly due to racism (perpetuated by the mistaken belief that foreigners "use" NZ without acculturating to the native cultures)
- some foreign communities tend to stick to their community even in other foreign lands
- and the belief that foreigners have a higher socioeconomic standing (mostly due to hard work) than local people
These mistaken beliefs, while they highlight the character deficits of morons who believe them, they also indicate the economic and cultural prejudices said scummy moron may have experienced themselves through generational trauma and subjugation of their cultural identity and race.
i.e the cultural history and makeup of NZ, like Trinidad and Tobago, revolves around old British colonialism that did not deal kindly to the indigenous Māori. While much has been addressed, still the system that oppresses remains, now renamed as neoliberalism. It continues to perpetuate an unfair social class system that leave many nonwhite - Māori, Polynesians, foreigners - at the bottom, fighting for the scraps. This engenders a society of haves and have-nots that colour our perception of people. Unfortunately some percieve Indians to be part of the haves, and express their biases unfairly.
Scratch a little deeper, underneath the sensationalist media headlines of racism, and you'll mayhaps see that the issues are not about Indian Vs New Zealanders, but about economic, social and cultural injustices that still exist in NZ and unfortunately, some Indians get stuck in the middle of that.
With that said, one also makes an individual choice in how they behave and not all choices can or should be condoned. In the end, our behaviour reflects our own personal choices no matter how or what influences them. So It doesn't excuse why some get attacked, nor justifies these heinous actions, but it helps to understand and come to some sort of peace, that Indians themselves are not the issue, but the need for NZ society to work harder towards a more equitable position for ALL peoples in NZ.
As a Māori, I understand your concern and disappointment.
Dreams are hard to let go and while NZ is a beautiful place with friendly people (overall), it is not without its issues and has much to work on.
I only hope that you choose to see beyond the headlines and make your own mind up on how you may or may not like NZ. It is not for everyone, and that's ok. 😉😊
P.s apologies for the super long essay. Racism & prejudices are blanket terms to cover up very complex sociocultural issues. It takes time to unravel the blanket to get to an understanding. 😊

I visited NZ in 2015 during my travels, spending about two months there. It’s an utterly stunning country, possibly my favourite. I drove all over the north and south islands, my only regret was I didn’t hire a car with a bigger fuel tank! Amazing scenery and amazing people. I can’t wait to go back someday.

Reminds me of taking my Indian partner to visit my family in Australia. We live in Israel not India but it's probably halfway in between in terms of noisiness and liveliness. When we arrived he said "why are there no people on the street" and I told him it was relatively busy because it was a sunny day. Also couldn't stand the unpredictable Melbourne weather and having to wear layers. One of the major things he noticed was how quiet everything was and the lack of honking.

I was lucky enough to live and work in India in 1983-4. I have never forgotten it, I still have dreams about it, and even as as Kiwi I feel homesick for the subcontinent (and for Japan too, having lived there for a number of years also). Natural social connections and social agreeableness are not the same in New Zealand as it is in many other parts of the world.

My great grandparents were from India and I've been to India twice but it's so noisy and loud always. Punjab countryside is the only place where I felt at peace and could get a good nights sleep. My dad lived in NZ for few years and absolutely loved it. To each it's own I guess.

The house you saw at the hotpools is called a "Marae" (meeting house) typically used for a last place of resting for family and friends to observe those who have past before being laid to rest...was used as homes pre and post colonization and the poles you saw are called a "Pou" which would typically depict a ancestor to the people of that land and also hold the story of the "Tangata Whenua" (people of the land).

NZ is amazing, as is India. We travelled both islands in NZ a few years ago and the South Island in particular has a jaw dropping view around every corner, especially as it was winter when we went. We have been so fortunate to travel to both such contrasting places and all the differences are what make both places so special. i love the story about queuing in India. we were at the Pune train station and being polite Australians, we were letting everyone in until we realized we would miss our train if we didn't hold our ground.

I’ve spent 6 months in New Zealand , when I was younger and a globetrotter. That was in 1983 . Beautiful country and friendly people, as a Sikh convert, wearing a turban, I was able to hitchhike, and I can say I didn’t face many problems. But it’s true, after travelling in India with a girlfriend from Christchurch , we felt New Zealand
was quite empty and almost too quite.

i live in bangalore, people do randomly greet each other here in our area on morning walks. and its a lot less aggro here , unlike delhi and north india. and yes i came back after living 17 years in Sweden. I do agree with manishas point there, life become boring without a purpose as you can go months before really talking to people in those cold places.

New Zealand has been a land of fantasy for me. it started with LOTR. but after watching it in documentaries and youtube videos the fascination only grew. I wish to visit it once

The shades of green in New Zealand are so vibrant and lush, it seems like an incredible country to visit. If I ever get down to Australia, I'd love to spend some time in New Zealand as well.
