@Hobarth McShane Haven’t been to Seoul, but Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok and Osaka all feel pure Blade Runner these days. Everyone says the same of Tokyo, although I disagree. Tokyo feels very Proto-Blade Runner, as instead of screens, most of its advertising and signage is with lightboxes, so feels more like a futuristic vision of the 90s, rather than Blade Runner per se. That said, streets are straight out the game Cyberpunk 2077.
Hopefully we can avoid these giant, natureless dystopias for as long as possible. It is a nice movie aesthetic, but to live without plant life I feel depresses the human will. I would love to see a city, where many rooftops can have a small tree garden. Where we can design plants to glow instead of electrical lights or lamps, even light up floors with transparent chambers filled with bioluminescent cells. I've seen how synthetic biology has the potential to build for us a very different future, with more elegance, and less waste. So if we ever reach a stage like this, we will have advanced nature alongside us into the future
Why not. But dont forget on that fact, about main idea of Blade Runner.. This world is not naturelless :) Its just very different. Humans will use that source energy, which will be most efficient. @@rangetervos3597 No. The character meant that he'd been made as a battle android and saw those wonderful things while at war, but it means nothing in the face of mortality, especially if you're only designed to live for 4 years. You know, they whole reason why they escaped and went to Earth in the first place? Apart from to not be "slaves" it was to extend their lives? We don't know, American test audiences famously did not get the film and it was the same after they forced Ford to do this idiotic narrative all over it that he hated to explain it all to everyone, like is happening now again. Ford had that pissed off voice, not just because it was hard boiled, but because having to explain it kind of ruins it, which is why that version of the film is never shown anymore, but maybe we should, for deep-thinking Americans like you. THE LEGACY OF BLADE RUNNER (1982) Most people, whether Americans or not, are unaware of just how much this movie changed not only the entire film and music industries, but every industry on the planet... the clothing industries, design, advertising, and the IT industries... all of it. Nothing is separate, and therefore, in doing that it literally changed world culture, pop culture as we knew it. It influenced all science fiction and fantasy, all futuristic design from that moment forward and it increased the SPEED with which the EBM and Electro-Industrial Music genres caught fire - the RESULT of THAT was the BERLIN WALL coming down in Germany faster as a result of the interaction between DJs in America (Pittsburgh & Detroit) and those DJs they exchanged with located in Berlin (West side) who were then funneling the new Industrial and electronic music coming out of both American and West Berlin through the underground tunnels to East bloc where in the East they began to dismantle their phone booths to build the equipment for underground club DJ setups in the East buildings, moving the clubs every night so as not to be discovered by the Stasi, and as they all continued to do this, from 1983-1989 the cultural barriers between the two sides of Berlin eroded further and the West became more demanding and the East became more aware of what was happening outside the bloc, and more and more unsatisfied, too, until the Wall finally came down in 1989. (There's a European documentary - several actually - about this though I can't recall the names at present I saw one on Amazon Prime and one on a Roku that had a DW (Deutsche Welle channel added, both documentaries were German with English subtitles).
As for Roy Batty's speech, which was written mostly by Rutger Hauer the night before his death scene was shot, his line "Like Tears in Rain" has been cited by poets, filmmakers, painters, and individuals in every industry since the movie came out as an influence and it is highly regarded as one of the most profound and poetic lines ever spoken in cinema.
