This is an incredible time capsule. Dean and Roy Glenn work really well together. Glenn was one of those unsung character actors that was gold anytime he was cast.
I don't quite understand the negativity among many comments toward Dean as an actor. He showed a vulnerability on screen that broke new ground. Only Montgomery Clift could parallel it. Brando got credit for" breaking out", but he was just a theatrical Dean at the beginning of his career. If anyone thinks Dean couldn't act - i.e. create convincing characters, consider his REBEL performance w/Natalie Wood. Then look at his character here.. He was an actor's actor. And had he the time, he'd have shown us more depth and diversity through opportunity and experience.
Of note: "Theatrical Dean" refers to using bare-bones vulnerability as a tool and echoing it from the stage rafters. It's not about who did what first. Brando was brilliant, but he never conveyed or recognized the strength it took to really show UR ass with no cover or METHOD make-up. Dean never had any fear about what he brought to the screen within his character - within himself.
@@RobertStambaugh-l5r The comparison I made has to do with the ability and willingness to show complete vulnerability. Regardless, any comparison involves a lifetime of Brando vs a few years of Dean.
Somebody here said Jimmy Dean wouldn’t be remembered as a great actor today, The thing is you’ve got to do is to put it all in context. Look at the actors Dean was working with. He stood out. Twitching and mumbling, and improvising. He did stand out. Maybe he’d be dull by today’s standards…..but in the 50s/early 60s, he was great. Mainly because he broke the confines of “acting” in those days. Lenny Bruce wasn’t a great comedian….but for the times he was doing his act…..he stood out and broke barriers. The first to do that…..like James Dean
i agree, for all his mumbling charlie chaplin-esque shuffling he was a genuine talent as was natalie wood. both hard working pros underneath the 'talent'. i think jimmy wouldve done really interesting things if he had have liv ed longer. mebe not groundbreaking bc he already achieved that, but certainly he wouldve continued to make some fine contributions to the actors trade. rip
Roy Glenn, who played Burt, was the best actor in this sort film, better than James Dean and Natalie Wood, in my opinion. Sherwood Anderson was a talented writer, and this story on Self Improvement succinctly shows that we all are fools.
Gostei muito de assistir esses filmes de James Dean! Eles foram feitos para a Televisão ou para Cinema? Ou são peças de Teatro? Por que a General Electric participa disso?
You know all these comments about James Dean is just more of people wanting to tear down anythimg and everything. When what they really hate are themselves. Really sad.
I agree. People are just praising James Dean because they've been taught that they are SUPPOSED to like him. People have lost all ability to think for themselves, resulting in the hate they shout when someone points out the straight fact that James Dean was a corpse who couldn't be bothered to open his mouth and made tiny little yawning sounds like a kid being forced to be in a school play.
The narration lead us through the story. Filled in parts and also told us what the character thought of his youthful actions. It's a story of making wrong choices for the wrong reasons. He was an innocent living in a small town and never exposed to the world's pitfalls. Remember, this was before movies, radio and TV bombarding us 24/7. People growing up in small towns or rural areas had limited exposure to the "outside" world.
This video should be shown to every millennial who has been taught to think James Dean was good even though they've never seen one of his movies. With this movie, you don't have to waste an hour and a half of your life. One little half-hour video, and you'll see what garbage he really was. He sounds like he's talking through a gag, and he looks like he's already dead. No emotion or expression at all.
This might sound completely insane but I was watching the 1958 sci fy horror movie The Blob and was thinking that if James Dean had live he would have been cast as the lead instead of Steve McQueen also Natalie Wood as his love interest!!! To me I think the writers for the original Blob wanted to make a Rebel Without a Cause vs The Thing sci fy movie!!
I know it may be considered a horrible opinion, but I never thought much of James Dean. If he didn't shuffle off so early in his career, I'm convinced people would be saying "James who?"
And on that note, I totally agree. And here we have Ron Reagan. The main reason why we have so many homeless on the streets as he closed down all of the mental health hospitals. And then as karma would have it he develops dementia only it was hidden and the white house pretended that all was well.

TV sure has changed...these morality tales seem so innocent ...still love them though - thanks for posting
Foi uma maravilha. Voltar a ver James Dean, ainda que num pequeno filme de TV, foi na verdade espectacular !

Dean could act the socks off of Brando , in the same way Connie sings the socks off of Streisand .

This was a live performance and early in his career before the three movies he became noted for.

@@mynameisworld I find it strange that fish who find it necessary to swim upstream bemoan the fish who choose to do the opposite.
Undoubtedly, best scenography ever, makes Cameron's Titanic a cheap job in comparison.
I really enjoyed this. 👍
Every one has there own personal feelings. Good story good actors. I keep my life simple. Dean good Reagan bad. Thank you.
🥱🙄
Both bad actors
wonder if Nick Ray saw this. He probably did.
I really didn't like the narrating part.😊
Yeah, they were trying too hard to be Our Town.

What kind of wood doesn't float ??

going by his acting in that film he should never have become as famous as he did…just about the worst acting I have ever seen…
💯

EAST OF EDEN really shows Dean's talent. He's a very natural actor
JAMES DEAN - He was just confused and "In The Closet". Terrible actor.
Hmmmm, says he who has Henry Cavill as his pfp 🤔 Have you come out of the closet yet 🥴
Yet people still know who he is
Will they still know you?
