Saw this as part of the TCM"s tribute to James Dean Live performances. I thought he was really outstanding in this particular teleplay. This should have gotten him an Emmy nomination (I don't think they had the single dramatic actor/actress category then). This one reminds me of his acting on his features films.

James Dean was a workaholic. In just five years, he has starred in some 37 productions for TV, made theater and films.

exactly. the surprise for me was he saying when he first moved to new york he was overwhelmed by the city and would spend hours watching movies on the cinema near his hotel room. now imagine how did he manage to star in so much productions without having major health problems? because he clearly was a pretty sensitive soul we can tell so how in hell did he do to not fall apart all that time

Most of Dean's TV work was done in his early struggling New York days, but he was working more than you could say of alot of actors in New York , alot or actors then we're regimented , basically all the same, then this guy comes on way way ahead of his time and bang, people noticed his extraordinary talent,he was so dam real,he studied people 24 hours, taking their mannerisms for a part,he just walked around doing this in coffee shops,in the Street, anywhere, don't forget thes productions were done live, in three days, and Dean's work was really quite astounding, nobody like him then or now,he became the character ,threw a few actors because they never new what he would do, the director's often said it looks ms good from in here ,they had a screen showing them whats happening while the actors performed, this was biang transmitted live I must stress this with limited rehearsal, Dean was so loose in his acting that you would think the scenes are real, which is what he was aiming for in every scene,it's no mistake that he went on to greater things, films for example in a very short time he was snapped up very quickly, because he was serious, acting was his life, and he studied all the time, that was the secret to James Dean.

@Roger Martin he looked up to Brando and clift, he once told dennis hopper " I'm brando saying fuck you in one hand and in the other I say I apologize I'm monty clift and in the middle is james dean". His acting I believe was purely his, yes he had elements of Brando and clift but they weren't as vulnerable as he was considering his upbringing and I believe that vulnerability brought out more in his acting. That being said the 3 greatest method actors of that era

Wow. I have waited literally 30+ years to find other footage of James Dean acting and thanks to You Tube, here they are. What a gift. Nice to see something besides his 3 major films with his work. I had heard of these TV appearances of his in New York in '53-early'55 for years and read about them, but I never thought that I would get to see them. He was simply the best that ever lived, in my opinion. You just can't take your eyes off of him when he is on the screen and he steals every scene, even from greats like Rock Hudson. God, I wish that he had lived longer. Gone way too soon. Thank you for posting this..

Patrick Couch I'm very pleased to find all this too. I've seen 2 of his 3 movies and I think one TV show, but that's it. I didn't even know these existed. I was looking up Rod Serling and stumbled upon all this, I am very excited to start watching! I'm glad to see I'm not the only person these days that loves old school actors when those on television and the big screen actually had talent (not that there aren't some really good ones out there today, but back then, that was the time). I don't know if you know about this show or not, has nothing to do with James Dean, but David Janssen (well known for the Fugitive) had a previous show before his Dr Kimble days as Richard Diamond, Private Detective and it's my all time favorite television program. Unfortunately there were only 66 episodes I believe and I ran through them in no time flat, but check it out if you haven't already. I love that show. I made a playlist with all the episodes of you can't find one. There used to be 9ne,but then I think the person deleted it, so I made one. Enjoy........

JAMES DEAN started it all - HIS sideburns and pompadour pushed back longer hair for the time led to Elvis - HIS attitude spoke of the rebellion of American youth to come which then influenced the youth of the world - HIS image and attitude led to what would go on to become what we know as rock and roll music - Elvis - Chuck Berry - The Beatles - Jimi Hendrix - rock - punk - grunge - It is all tied together - BUT it had to start sometime - And that sometime was with JAMES DEAN - who in my opinion was a Rebel WITH a cause !

Jimmy studied people, his mother was known in the family for her ability to mimic others actions/mannerisms and talking and so Jimmy learned from her. Both Jimmy and I, he on his mother's side and I on my mothers side are related and are cousins from the same family of Wilson's that still to this day live up around the same place in Indiana. Long before I'd gotten into the Ancestry website and tracing back my family line I admired James Dean, had posters of him up and so it was a shock to me to find we were related and from the same Wilson clan. I always thought it was interesting that out of all of them in our family he and I were the only ones that needed glasses as kids and were incredibly nearsighted. RIP cousin Jimmy, I would have loved to have gotten to know you but you are loved and remembered not just by family but by people all over the world. You continue to touch lives and your art lives on inspiring others, which is what you had always hoped for. I hope you're up in heaven and reunited with your mother Mildred, and your father Winton. I know due to her cancer and then your father being drafted for WW2 that you guys didn't get long to be a real family but I hope that has changed in the afterlife, you're all remembered and loved. Our family up in Indiana still tell tales about how you raced around on your little Czech motorcycle you painted up black and yellow like a hornet. I'm honored that the same bloodline flows thru my veins as did thru yours, as you are a beautiful soul inside and out; shine bright like the brilliant star you always were!

Sixty-six years ago, this was what the Golden Age of Television looked like- theatre, via a Cathode Ray Tube, containing low clarity lenses, poor sound quality, with the live performances of novice and veteran actors, all caught and preserved on a classic B&W Kinescope. This is James Dean at his raw and spontaneous best- a thin, struggling NYC Thespian playing- as usual- a psychopathic, troubled youth, looking for his father's approval. Though his Hollywood films were in color- something that left him looking more "contemporary"- NBC television captures more of the dated quality of the time period from which he emerged, and from which he was never to escape, the 1950's. A strange and foreign time, a time that I myself can remember in my early childhood just a decade later, but barely. Images in this work seem truly eerie. The fact that Rod Serling wrote this teledrama, does not make things any smoother. There are elements of his surreal, more famous program in Dean's lines, particularly the part when he talks about "Johnny", a mysterious, invisible pal who would call him ("Joey! ...") from the street during the early hours of the morning. This person seems to be almost like a ghost; more a representation of an innocent childhood lost, rather than of a real person, or even a sinister Angel of Death, who in the end, woos him to the window of his bedroom, where he is greeted by an array of bullets. In any case, this download, though at times melodramatic, is an excellent hour of American history, depicting both a by-gone era and one still vital, with its true-to-life characterizations of broken-hearted fathers, delinquent sons, weary wives, country homes, kind neighbors, war heroes, poetic children, disillusioned cops- and Rabbinical "Poppa Goldens", complete with coffee, sandwiches and cigarettes.

+stardustgirl I love him too. But a CGI avatar would be in bad taste. It wouldn't be the real man. Just basically a picture with whatever programming the creator wanted. I understand what you mean though. It would be amazing to have him back. But it wouldn't have any of the things that made Dean such a great artist. Those things now only exist on celluloid and the handful of videotaped live TV dramas like this one. Great work for a guy who made 3 movies in a year and didn't live to see 25. Only one film had been released when he died. He was largely an unknown up-and-coming actor. Thankfully there were some people working in New York that wanted to make use of the new videotape machines the networks had acquired. If they hadn't then these TV dramas would never have been seen again after their first airing.

It's amazing to realize that Rod Serling wrote this! The first thing I think of when I think of Rod Serling is The Twilight Zone. I knew he wrote other things, but didn't realize his career started somearly and that Serling actually wanted Dean for the role. I thought Dean had already passed away by the time Serling `s career beg. Wow..these two geniuses actually knew of each other!

Like Dean, Serling broke through in 1955 with the teleplay PATTERNS....that is on TH-cam as well
