Only a few months on from the release of the Px7 S2's, Bowers & Wilkins are back with their flagship headphone model, the all-new Px8's. However, can we find enough substance to justify the hefty price tag?

I just received these headphones today.
I've spent about 3 hours with them before hooking them up to my burn in rig later tonight.
I've streamed Qobuz lossless, Apple music lossless and FLAC files.
I've tested the ANC, the transparency mode and a 45 minute phone call.
I then A-Bed them against three headsets, the Dan Clark Audios Aeon 2, the Sennheiser HD800 and the Focal Radiance. Each of these sets have their strengths and weaknesses. The PX8 held their own against the mentioned sets wired, and were excellent for the call and the ANC was almost as good as the Apple AirPod Max ANC.

Okay so I've had these for a little under a week now, and also had just about every ANC pair under the sun that's on the market today...and I want to give some of my thoughts on these
Are these a huge upgrade over the Px7 S2...in my mind yes, but for non-obvious reasons. The build is improved? Yeah. The comfort is improved...of course. But, it's the sound quality that's the most different. Notice how I didn't say better (though it is) but different as well. Here's what I mean. Note this also sort of applies to nearly every other pair on the market save the Focal Bathys.
These have a very unique presentation and timbre. I wouldn't call these dark, but they are quite warm. They are extremely agile and punchy, tightly controlled bass. The soundstage is where I find it most unique. It is not a necessarily spacious soundstage in a 3d sense, like the Focal Bathys is or Airpods Max with spatial audio on are, but it is extremely wide in a different way. I don't feel enveloped by sound. I feel like I am sitting front and center stage at a concert and the entire track is in front of me. I can clearly pick out where each instrument is, I can hear every nuanced detail, but they are in front of me and clearly separated. I love this. It's an extremely unique sound and it's so engaging. I can sit and listen to these for hours.
Trust me. These are the headphones of your dreams. I respect the reviewers opinion that if you aren't driving these with 24 bit aptx hd sourcing, you're missing out...I'd respectfully disagree. Apple Music Lossless is still great, and because of the extremely unique tone and presentation of these headphones vs anything else on the market, I would recommend these hugely to anyone looking to experience more out of their music, even if you may not have the cleanest sourcing. I promise you that it's worth it if you care about your music and you have the budget.

@@troensvitnesbyrd not even close anymore… These are the new kings either that or the focal bathys.
H95 are great but they are a year and a half going on two years old at this point and technology has passed them by note that you can see them on rather sizable sales these days, which usually means there’s a new model coming at some point and I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a new model in the next six months

Use a good headphones amplifier. If you buy a good one $200-400 you can increase the volume by a significant amount. The problem would be with the drivers or the headphones themselves. If they are not able to drive that high of a volume considering that the amplifiers are good, you will get crackling on your music, which would be because of the headphones. But these are loud in general than say Bose headphones. I have tried only Bose but their mobile department lacks volume in their internal Amp circuitry. I have read many reviewers mention B&W PW8 have good volume, I am probably going to buy these because I can return them back (says on the website).

As a user of PX8 for few months, I was not entirely happy with their sound quality (was lacking this fun factor). I decided to try lower class (PX7 S2) as I do really like B&W sound signature. My immediate feeling was, more balanced sound. Higher frequencies are not too harsh, bass is present but not disturbing, and I dont know if this is only me, but have a feeling of more space in sound stage. I personally like PX7 S2 more than pX8 and based on my experience I can say but PX7 S2 instead of PX8. But sound quality is a subjective thing of course.

IMPORTANT - READ BEFORE YOU BUY THE PX8: In looking at both the Bowers & Wilkins PX8 and the Focal Bathys I had decided to purchase the PX8 HOWEVER In contacting B&W I found out the BATTERY inside the headphone is NOT REPLACEABLE. Bowers and Wilkins Service told me the battery should last about 3 years (just past warranty) and after it goes bad you throw the headphones out and buy their newest model (this is CRAZY). In contrast Focal will service the battery in the Bathys for $200 parts and labor which is expensive but saves your investment.

Let’s be realistic. Unfortunately this culture of constant upgrading is embedded in people. People upgrade from iPhone 13 to 14 even though nothings changed. They upgrade from px7 s2 to px8 even though marginally improved. So in 2 years it’s very likely that this px8 will be on used market place for $200 which means you’re better off buying a new than serving it to replace the batter (even if you could). At least they are honest about it.
I just think $800 is overpriced for what they offer. But the battery life doesn’t bother me much as pretty much any headset will lose 50% + of its capacity in 3 years based on your usages
