  • Top 5 things to be aware of when practicing guitar to improve technical ability. Some might seem obvious or some might seem a bit unorthodox, but a lot of guitarists want to rush to be as fast as possible and end up treading water and not really improving.

    Definitely helped me
    Out with sweeping I had some minor sweeps that I thought I played well and every now and again I get this unwanted texture went back and slowed it all at a beginners pace and totally cleaned it out.

    This is so inspirational. Very informative and so down to earth. Working simultaneously on three different projects now (one singer songwriter, one prog rock and one metal). In a month I'll finally start my pop - jazz guitar studies as well. Hopefully I'll one day reach your level and control of the instrument. At the moment I just feel like I suck, no matter what some people said.

    Thank you for this lesson! Although I know for quite some time now how importent it is to follow all these steps, eventually I tend to forget or just simply overlook them sometimes. I guess many musicians have this problem. Anyways it's always a pleasure to watch you sharing your experience!

    Awesome vid -- one more thing I thought I would add -- when practicing sweep picking, just me personally, I find it better to use the bridge pickup -- it's harder to hide mistakes that way...the neck pickup seems to allow you to make a bit more mistakes when sweeping and hide them...I dunno, that's just me though, maybe I'm crazy?

    Thanks for your awesome videos man! Do you have any opinion about standing up or sitting down while practising? The position of your guitar gets a lot lower while standing up which kinda makes it harder to have good posture. Anyway, that is certainly the case with me. I feel like I am in a lot less control, though my guitar is not hanging ridiculously low either. Would it be better to practise standing up? Thx for you answer! You're a great guitarplayer!

    Hello there, thats for ur video, i got few questions for you:
    1. What regual practice routine would you recommend for a player that have like 2 hours of time to play on guitar? for example 50% time i'll play songs i like, and other one? what would you do?
    2. Do you use some kind of audiointerface to connect your guitar to pc? and what is it?
    3. How much time would you recommend to play exercises? My last teacher told me to play exercises only, and thats why he killed inspiration to play guitar in me, it was so boring, knowing that without playng exercises i wont be able to play anything good...
    4. What picks do you use?
    Thanks again for your tips.

    As far as physical exercises i do yoga. When i started it i didnt expect to discover my body, mobility and strength deteriorated so much, yoga helped a lot. I still dont have full mobilty in my wrists. All because of guitar, my palms and fingers lean toward my body, like in a monkey, just because this is how we have our hands positioned when playing.

    Josh, I've playing guitar for a couple of months now. Mostly scales and sweepings lick and learning how to gallop recently. But I want know, do I need to know lots of music theory to learn guitar? Like notes, harmonies, intervals and all that?

    • @JoshMiddletonOfficial
      @JoshMiddletonOfficial  9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      You don't need to know all that stuff but it is handy. I'd say it's more important to learn the basic chords (not power chords) and learn some basic songs before going straight into trying to play leads etc though

    • @carlozamora8541
      @carlozamora8541 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I always use light strings. Due to an injury I had to really re evaluate my technique so I put VERY minimal pressure on the fretboard. So much so that when I go into a music store and try to play standard 10s on a shop guitar I struggle because I use 9-46 for E standard, 11-52 for C# standard and 11.5-54 for C standard

    • @Emily-uy6cx
      @Emily-uy6cx 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try gradually getting the strings thicker when your injury has healed a little more. This is important to build up the muscles in your hands

    Good video, very useful, but quite uncomfortable to watch. You warn against too much cutting and pasting when recording oneself playing, but I wish you'd applied this to your editing of this video. I found the incessant jumping from one cut to the next irritating. You might think it makes for a smoother effect, but maybe you could allow some mistakes or hesitations to stay in the mix. You'd come across as more human, and it would also be easier and quicker to make.
