Beginners Approach To Learning Guitar - Josh Middleton

  • For anyone about to start guitar; there are a few key areas to get to grips with first. These basic foundations do play a big role in development and get you started with a musical approach as opposed to a technical approach.
    Not only does learning this way help develop basic techniques (that people diving straight into metal can overlook completely), it also helps develop you as a songwriter - understanding what makes a basic song work when all you have is one guitar.

    Oh man, the "leaping right into riffy rock guitar and neglecting all but basic chords" was something that held me back for years, I'm only just getting past it and learning that sort of thing now and I definitely feel like it messed up my playing. Definitely good advice for new players who might be tempted to get ahead of themselves.

      Alex Maskill me too ive played for 7 years before i went backward to learn basic scaes and chords and there is a HUGE difference.

      Alex Maskill same here, 15 years of playing and skipping the basics killed my progress. Ironically, it took not playing for a while to jump start everything and go back to the basics/learning theory.

    Here Here!.....to everything you've said. I've never had a lesson at all. I've been playing for 23 years. I've had to figure all of this out, before you tube and tab was available everywhere. I had to go and buy tab in book form from music shops. If I had taken lessons I'd undoubtedly be a much better player. The thing is you never stop learning and what I've found rewarding about the whole process is that I've had to figure it out all by myself.....it's made me a much more rounded player. Give me just an acoustic guitar and I can entertain a party or a pub all night, that's a skill I value. I love watching the faces of non-players when a new song that has just come out, that I've heard for the first time and you can just pick it up by ear and play it in front of them.
    Your videos are excellent Josh. Thanks for taking the time to do them. I do watch all of them even if it applies to beginner stuff, like I said, you never stop learning. Keep it up mate!

    Great advice, and clearly explained. I'd add: get used to playing without watching your hands. Your hands will learn to feel where they are and won't waste time in communicating with your eyes. This will also have a huge impact on your posture and, consequently, on your technique and ability.

    My first couple of years on guitar were spent on my dad's old classical nylon acoustic. I learned my musical ABCs through classical and Latin styles even though all I wanted to do was rock out to Rage Against the Machine. I did not become proficient at those styles by any stretch, but they did teach me a lot about music and musicality in general that carried over to my rock/metal playing. I still toss in finger-style licks here and there when I play clean.
    Great advice, Josh. Thanks for the videos.

    Very true. I have been playing for close to 6 years, I can play some of your stuff but can't improvise over a backing track.

    in my first 3 years i have almost mastered most technique from accoustic fingerstyle to metal sweep ,downpick but i can't play a full song yet .never really tried it .anyway to play a full song you generally need most technique

    • @JoshMiddletonOfficial
      @JoshMiddletonOfficial  9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      borhanus I'm not talking about metal songs, I'm talking about playing songs like 'Wonderwall' all the way through which is absolute beginner level stuff but a lot of players skip over

      Josh Middleton Ⓥ I am amazed at how many players are technically advanced but miss out what Hendrix taught us or B.B king and skip the juicy melancholy stuff like Major 7's and Jazz chords and song writing. Every guitar player should grab a copy of Queen, Michael Jackson, Jamrioquai song book even if they're not into it, just as a primer to see how they approach songwriting and how the chords move and shapes. Great vid mate!

    I agree, learning to play the basics on an acoustic guitar is the best way to start learning , I crashed and burned when trying to play metal song as I learnt .

    Does anyone know what thickness of picks does Josh use? I've been using 0,81 mm, but lately I've been feeling that I need to start using a thicker one and since I don't have a music store nearby I'll have to order them online so I won't have a chance to try them out first. I'm not sure between an 0,96 mm or an 1,2 mm.

    The amount of people I've seen who 'can' sweep pick but not improvise over a basic A minor progression just makes me sad
