I really loved the switch in perspective when the son sees the Erlkönig. The immediate tonal shift and the way everything slowed down really sold the delirious state he was in.
I love the art style, and even though I’ve heard the original song that this is portraying, I like that if someone else hasn’t heard the song can still understand what’s happening
Wow!!! Very impressive. It is also my understanding that in the boy's illness, he starts to hallucinate and passed away, which is what many other versions of visual stories missed. Well done!
Thank you!! I wanted to make much more of this but unfortunatelly I had so little time that I had to cut most of it :( There were supposed to be many creatures of the forest appearing, everything changing... Maybe someday :D
@Наталья Игишева @sufiwho the poem is probably, more simply, just about the actual fae and the seelie/unseelie/sidhe court that just totally "did" this stuff all the time and goethe based his poem of the danish ballad "elveskud," in which the elf king's daughter is actually the antagonist. the wild hunt especially would just follow people around, especially if there was a battle going on, and take them for various reasons. if you hear a ruckus in the sky, it was them and you just didn't want to attract their attention-- or else! lol. (unless you're from other western or eastern cultures in which it was other processions of demons, ghosts, fae, gods like thor or freya, etc. though it still had the same dire consequences.) it's the whole mythos of cold iron, changelings and fetches, all that stuff. it's so interesting, but hella eerie if you put yourself in those poor people's shoes and have no other explanation.
@Наталья Игишева but the horse would've gotten spooked at anything, that's horses. and most animals, lol. the fae ride horses and in many cases _are_ the horses. though they definitely killed the boy through sickness as the entire fairy/faery thing was often what we could consider just neurodivergent and sickness and plagues weren't actually devils etc. 'changelings' were often just kids who had autism or adhd and or spoke their mind in unbecoming ways (bridget cleary's a famous case in that last instance).
Beautifully done. I've loved the Schubert piece for years, and while this doesn't use that piece I was equally moved by your artwork and animation and Mr. Kuczyński's soundtrack. Brilliantly done.
I love you captured and emphasized both the father's determination and emotion. Amazing how much emotion and expression can imbue in those few seconds. The sublimation of emotion . Really moving.
woah, I think the choice you made here to have the child be the one reaching out to the Erl-King and the father the one desperately running, slapping his hand away, is _so_ poignant. Along with the attention to detail, all the little bits in the background, the way the shadows meld into full beings and the leaves fall--- this is just so eerie and exhilarating at the same time. I love it!
I know that this animation is supposed to be an illustration for the poem by Goethe, but with how this animation turned out the story that goes through my head when watching this is as follows : This is the sequel of the poem and the man is the same father with the poem. He has since moved on and have another son. But under some circumstances he and his second son have to pass through the forest quickly. Unfortunately, like the first, the second son also caught the Erlking's attention and tepted the child (or it could be said that the child caught the same illness with his brother's and halucinates again). The second child almost gave in but then the father snapped him out of it and rushed through the forest, this time safely.
That change in the boy's face colour is what draws the line between what we read and what's actually going on behind the poem. Brilliant interpretation. But....i was expecting the lied honestly.
Wow, I got goosebumps I even shed a tear at the end. I just love this work, I know it by heart, I watched different video sequences on TH-cam. This one amazed me

Gratuluje! :)
May I ask how long it took to create this animation? I'm just a beginner in my illustration/animation process and I'm always curious to know what lies ahead :)
+PancakeTutu Of course :)) Hm, if you give it all, it should take about 3-5 months. I took me longer because I had other classes as well and I wasn't sure how exactly was it going to look like. I struggled with the concept for a few months. First time takes longer but you'll learn a lot in the process :) Please, let me know when you make something, I'd love to watch it!!
+Rida Farooq Thank you so much! :D I didn't think of that but you're so right xD I got inspired mostly by... Naruto (the eyes) and Venom I think. But it's always hard to tell where ideas come from :)
LOVED THIS!! I heard Schubert song and was thinking of learning how to do animation just so I could make a short film to it. Thats not needed anymore. This was really great!
Hi, I'm a French teacher and I will show this to my pupils too : we're going to study the poem "Cauchemar" by Paul Verlaine ; it's inspired byvGoethe's Erlkönig. This vid is amazing !
oooooo the erlkonig was so perfectly creepy (I should not have watched this in the middle of the night) and I loved the lead up to the climax with their hands reaching out to each other. But then it ended so quickly afterwards and I was left wanting the rest of the story. I guess deadlines often spoil creative masterpieces :) Awesome work!
but you did a lovely job, its awesome to watch :3 and the sounds, i really like how you managed to work all together without sounding cheap or like from inside a can
That's actually wrong. Goethe changed the name from "Elfkönig" from a scandinavian fairytale with an Intention. "Erl" referes to european "Erlen", which are trees, so that it wouldn't be directly connected to a fairytale. instead he wanted the poem to be close to nature and these kind of images. But it's definitely not an old german word for elves.
Given the length of the film, I was expecting you to use Schubert's setting of Goethe (or Liszt's setting of Schubert's setting of...) which are about this long. But what you did instead, to my ears anyway, was to be use those same abrupt shifts in tone, but with new music. Bravo!
Haven't you heard: I'm Sakamoto brought me here. Besides this is a very beautiful song that I couldn't help but to listen to it's original version and not the anime version. But nonetheless this is a very good song that I've came to love
I really loved the switch in perspective when the son sees the Erlkönig. The immediate tonal shift and the way everything slowed down really sold the delirious state he was in.
Ah, thank you, I'm very glad you noticed that :))
@Наталья Игишева but that's what's amazing about the poem: that it admits that reading as well as others.
I didn't need to sleep tonight anyway.

I love the art style, and even though I’ve heard the original song that this is portraying, I like that if someone else hasn’t heard the song can still understand what’s happening
Benjamin Kuppler I think Kaitlyn is talking about Schubert’s amazing rendition.
Beautiful animation. I find it interesting that you had the child survive in your version.
Thank you:) Oh, but he didn't survive ;)
@@lune-moon5664 The two leaves at the end and the small one falling and withering symbolizes the child dieing.
Wow!!! Very impressive. It is also my understanding that in the boy's illness, he starts to hallucinate and passed away, which is what many other versions of visual stories missed.

Looking forward to it when you are done!
@@miklassic I think it's perfect the way it is. The shriveling of the leaf at the end tells you all you need to know. Brilliantly done.

This is awesome and I really hope you did well on your project because holy cow this deserves an A+.
It is in Poland: "5+"
I don't know how I stumbled over this, but this is the best version of Erlkönig so far. Love it. 😍 The metaphor is just perfect!

You're too kind, thank you so much! :')))
Congratulations, this is amazing! I really love both the animation and the music. Keep up the good work!

There's an etude by Marc-Andre Hamelin which, to my mind, could work brilliantly with this superb animation.

Fun Fact:
'Erl' was the old german word for 'Elven'
So the Erlking was the german version of an Elvenking
+Starscreamnemesis Ooo, I didn't know that :D

WOOOOw amazing, imagine this with the Schubert´s music, but i like the story without the music. It´s different, congratulations!
Absolutely *stunning* and underrated
Doing a animation is very hard. Keep it up with your hard work
Thank you so much, I will!:))
I can hear Schubert humming along.
WOW, wie hast du das animiert.?
Brilliant. The only """complaint""" I have, is that I wished the music your friend made sounded a little more like the song made from the poem! :P
Breathtaking!!!

Wow!
Absolutely beautiful animation! Have you heard of Shubert’s take on the poem? It’s quite beautiful too
This was brilliant
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe ( Germany´s Shakespeare...and more): "Der Erlkönig" (The Erl King"), a very famous poem.
Schubert: I hate you but I also love you.
wow richtig toll

Mein Vater, Mein Vater!
Terrific and terrifying. Happier ending than most erlkonig productions and this wasn’t a happy ending lol
The leaf at the end falling and withering resembles the death of the child
Its so good!!
loved it
:))))
Amazing, that's all I can say
Max ist cool
