Awesome video of my favorite Jazz Band! They were and are til this very day Super Authentic. You know Fattburger's Sound the moment you hear it. Nothing in the world like it. The very first Jazz Band I hitched my wagon to while being a young Marine at Camp Pendleton and just learning Smooth Jazz. I so miss that San Diego Jazz scene along with Lights Out Jazz on the radio station back in the mid 80's. They use to play smooth Jazz from 6pm til 6am and then eventually started Playing Jazz 24 hours. What a Great Time in my life.
Nothing says more about smooth jazz in San Diego than listening to Fattburger on a Saturday evening at the Catamaran, or Humphrey's, or a Sunday afternoon at UTC, Mission Valley, or Fashion Valley, or on some occasions at Seaport Village.
Be very careful,if you listen to this over 3 times, you will always sing this song to yourself for the rest of your life,as well the rest catalog, thank you fatburger,p.b.cafe,rusty pelican la jolla....ect.1985,1986
I listen to FATTBURGER everyday pretty much for the last 5 years. Even tough I've been around a while, I am just getting to learn more from the vast catalogue they put together. GREAT MUSIC
I was born in 1989 and this first song always make me get a really good mood, the name is awesome too "good news" who don't enjoy good news? For heaven's sake. It's really a shame I won't be able to go to a concert of this band, but I'm thankful I'm able to listen to their music now. Thanks again and greetings from Colombia
I Saw Fattburger At Zanzibar blue in Philadelphia in 2007, along with a very dear friend" Steve "You Know Who You Are. We saw both shows that night. I loved it
This is unbelievable!!! There is very little material of Fattburger on TH-cam, so a clip like this is extremely rare. Only video of the old classic line-up! If there's more: keep it coming. Thanks a mill for posting this (are you Carl's son by any chance?). RIP Carl and Hollis.
Hi, Nice to hear from you! No, I never got to see them live, unfortunately. I live in Europe (born in The Netherlands, based in Germany now). Do post some more soon, that would be great. You must miss your dad a lot. He was a great musician. I love his keyboard solos. Fattburger was one of the pioneers of what they call smooth jazz today (although I personally dislike that word). It was just great music with different influences from funk to latin to jazz to pop. Blessings from Germany.
I saw Fattburger often, At the PB cafe and Halcyon on El Cajon Blvd. I shook your father's hand a few times thanking him for his excellent playing and being a nice man. thank you for upload.
OHH MY GOODNESS!!!!.....Early Fattburger on video and tight as can be...Fantastic!!!YES...Please.Carl. post some more if you can... I'm a huge fan out here in Boston, Ma.I got to see them play here in '93 and it was simulcast live on a local jazz station that night. A friend of mine said he recorded it and has it somewhere in his collection of tapes over the years and will gift it to me when he finds it....What a show they put on...I was in heaven!...Your father was the center of the party that night...An extraordinary and gifted man he was and is soo missed by many here....Thank you for sharing a piece of his brilliance with us...God bless.
I recorded it live from the radio that night ! The old WSJZ 96.9 in Boston. I've thinking about that the past few days. Used to listen to it all the time, and of course haven't had the tape for at least 20 years. They opened with "Night After Night" and it was killin !! This was around the time I started going to see Boston band Heavy Metal Horns every weekend. Such great times !!!

Wow!! This is Classic.... God Bless Hollis and Carl....This brings back great memories. Especially of me running the streets of San Diego quenching my thirst for jazz. Thanks for this post!
My life...used to go see these guys EVERY weekend and some weeknights - The Catamaran, Fattburger's Cafe...and *sigh* oh the magic...so, so long ago but lingers...Make This Dream Come True was my most favorite with Ella Ruth Piggee :-) Hollis was wonderful too, very approachable! This really makes me miss my home town. Thanks for sharing!!
Grew up on these guys! Actually found two autographed albums at record shop in Ocean Beach a couple of weeks ago! 03/2024. I feel blessed. I miss these guys a lot! RIP Hollis & Carl
fantastic early video with the GREAT Hollis Gentry...the first time i heard and saw Fattburger was in the late '90 at Blues Alley in Washington DC...when i came back to SD in 2001, i saw them often at Humpherys...
Saw them once live @ The Cubby Bear, Chicago 89-90 or so. Steve had already left. But the set was awesome. One of my all time favorite bands. RIP Carl Evans
Still have the beautiful DaVinci book Carl gave me as a B’day present. All the memories of opening Holy Smokes. It was a good time. RIP Carl and Hollis.
i love that people are dancing!!! grooving!!!! i remember seeing a video on youtube on which the great jazz teacher barry harris talking about how they used to go see jazz ensembles to dance!!!!
Hi Carl thanks a lot for posting that video. I've been listening to Fattburger for such a long time and even once saw them at Humphrey's Backstage Live. God bless Hollis and Carl. It would be great if the remaining members would team up to produce new Fattburger tracks. It would be great if you could share more videos of the band as there is hardly any live material available. Thanks!
Nice performance...I have several of their CDs, and didn't realize that One of a Kind was originally released in '86 (have the '93 edition). Most unfortunate about Carl and Hollis, but at least they were able to enjoy excellent musical success.
Alan Phillips is still a good choice though for their sound. But Carl Evans Jr. is irreplaceable as stated by Alan Phillips and an idol. I wish I got to see him. But I was only 10 before he died.
Good News if this pandemic over Fattburger can perform in Java Jazz one of biggest jazz event. Unfortunately, without great keyboardist Car Evans jr and Hollis Gentry.
DeeJayRoyal, They were playing at the Catamaran Resort Hotel in Mission Beach, San Diego. I live in San Diego and I am a huge Fattburger fan. There will never be another artist like him. You're right! Thanks for the correction. I got my locations mixed up. The Catamaran...yes and Hollis Gentry. Trip I was just talking about them both recently with a Lyft driver who had a Fattburger Cd. It all seems like so long ago....
This version of "Good News" might be better than the album. Certainly funkier The dude dancing at 0:15 is the vibe. It's starting to look a little spazzy in the next shot, but he hit that one
I have been a fan of Fattburgers since 1985. I was stationed in San Diego and frequently went to their shows. Great music and great memories.
Did you happen to know what happened to them? Their website is from like 2006 and not too much online presence
