    Track and Layout planning are a hobby within a hobby for me. If I had spent half the time that I've spent designing track and model railroad plans that never got built in building actual model railroads, I would've built half of them by now!
    In this quick overview of a fairly complex design that I did for a client last year, I show my methods of building a physical 3D model of a model railroad benchwork that can be an excellent tool and a reference while building the real one. In a way if you do this exercise, especially for larger and complex layout, you sort of build the whole layout before you start building it which can be of huge benefit for both ambitious beginners as well as experienced builders. Who doesn't want to know what the future holds for us?

    Definitely think that to make a mock up like you’ve shown, will help avoid clearance, alignment and spacing problems.
    It’s a great idea, and I shall apply it for my layout construction.
    Love the model of the model, great vid, excellent idea!!

      Thank you Vincent for your kind words and I am glad that this was helpful. I am a person who cannot visualise things completely in 2D. So, a 3D, physical replica helps me immensely. Moreover if you’re taking help from someone to do the benchwork (like in this case), this method really gives clarity to someone who is not close to the design.

    Such an authentic idea. Never had seen this idea before anywhere else. Computerized design is good, but this scaled down model is the best way to make sure the result is as desired. Thank you.

      Thank you Robert! I’m glad that you think so. You can be as objective as you need to be while doing this in different stages. Like this particular one is good till the bench work and track work stage. Once you reach that stage in the real project and ready for the scenery, the same model can be used to do a mock up of scenery, buildings etc. it’s really a very interactive tool. Thank you for looking. Cheers! Kaustav

    Many years ago Hornby made plastic small scale tracks of their 00 scale. They were great. Have looked and looked on e bay to no avail.

      Yeah, I can’t remember on top of my head but either Atlas or Kato did the same as well - they called that track planning template. Never had one myself because I have never actually designed or made a layout with set tracks - it has always been flex tracks and turnouts. Thanks for looking, cheers! Kaustav

      Glad it was helpful! Yes, I always find making miniature models of larger projects helpful. After all that's one of the key reasons 'models' came into being - 'visualizing the future!' 😎

    Competently executed as this project may be, a highly talented modeller like you is wasted on this kind of mock up... IR is waiting for your creative energy 😀

      @TrainsandDioramas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      haha, thank you Ranjeev! You know it better than anyone in this whole world that Indian Railways is tough and it certainly doesn't feel like a hobby when you're into it - it feels more like a job! I tend to balance fun vs. job when it comes to Model Railroading, so my fun side will always focus on other aspects of the hobby. 😎🍻

    Kustav, you did finer construction on your model of a layout, than what most people do on their actual layout. I love the animation of C3PO at the beginning. It looked really good. You need to do some more of that!

    • @TrainsandDioramas
      @TrainsandDioramas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you my friend! It's a great tool to build a successful model - believe it or not, my client for this project was a first timer when it comes to building a layout and with this model and the help of a carpenter, he was running trains within 2 months of starting the project!
      The C3PO stop motion was really 'at the moment thing' that came out well. Yes, now I want to do a little more of a stop motion animation for sure. They take an aweful lot of time, but it is worth it in the end.
      Thanks for stopping be. Cheers! Kaustav

    This is a good idea. I have this software. But I will need the paid version. The free version is to limited to do a whole 12 by 16 foot room. Thanks for sharing.

    • @TrainsandDioramas
      @TrainsandDioramas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I used the free version for many years before moving to the paid version (back then the limitation was that you could use only 50 pieces of track /layout elements). I think if you enjoy track planning it makes sense to buy the paid version, especially since it's a one time payment. Cheers! Kaustav

    Very nice! Have you thought of a name for your new scale? ...and when will there be operating trains on it. Watch almost all of your videos.

    • @TrainsandDioramas
      @TrainsandDioramas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LOL! Thank Tony! Haven’t given this scale a name yet, may be we can call it HOby15? I think we need to get into the realm of nanotechnology for a working layout in this scale. More suitable perhaps for the true space age when model railroaders travel to distant parts of the galaxy...
      Thank you for all your support Tony, really appreciate it.
      Cheers!

      Anytime Mark, send it over via email or through Facebook messanger. It is always fun to make these models and I am sure it will help your future expansion especially if you're thinking of making it a bit complex :)
      The C3PO stop motion took about an hour or so. may be a bit more and it's very rough around the edges, but it was real fun when I sped it up. thinking of trying something like that with articulated HO figures when I have time (god knows when!).
      Thank you for stopping by my friend. It seems you're having great fun with trains and that's what this hobby is about. Stay well. Cheers! Kaustav

    Truly amazing work! How many man hours did construction take you?

    • @TrainsandDioramas
      @TrainsandDioramas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you! I didn't really paid much attention to it, but the layout planning and the mdel taken together it was not less than 30 hours The construction of the staging+level 1+ helix section took the longest time, plus when you're filming, the cemera adds 10 hours! 😂

      Hi! We call it PVC foam board or 'sun' board here. It can be anything though, even cardboard, or plasticard. Thanks for looking. Cheers! Kaustav
