    What do you think of when you hear the letters GTO? If it's speed and style, you're on the right track, and this week's Muscle Car Of The Week is long on both. This 1969 GTO Convertible is loaded with options rarely seen on these cars, and also packs a Ram Air IV 400 with a 4-speed. From The Brothers Collection.

    It is worth noting that the 370hp rating is under rated. This was done to deal with a Pontiac Directive that no car exceeds one HP per 10lbs. of car weight. The reasoning behind this restriction was that insurance companies were dramatically raising the rates on "high powered cars". This under rating was acheived by "pegging" the rpm at which the HP rating was listed. They used the estimated RPM at 70mph, approximately 3900 RPM with 4.33:1 ratio rear end. At 5600 RPM the Ram Air IV actually produced 420hp and 445 lbf⋅ft of torque.
    My 69 GTO has the base model 400, which is accurately rated at 350HP and 360 lbf⋅ft of torque.
    Magnificent Car, thanks for sharing it with us.

      Jeremy Thompson can it beat the king Buick

    • @jeremythompson9122
      @jeremythompson9122 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlejandroP1980s Not too many cars of that era could beat a 70 Buick GS/GSX 455 Stage 1 in the 1/4 mile with a good driver behind the wheel and the right set of gears in the rear end. In 1970 it had the 5th quickest 1/4 mile time of any new muscle car tested by any magazine. Motor Trend said the Buick Stage 1 was the quickest muscle car they had ever tested but other magazines got quicker times out of a few 426 Hemi powered Mopars and an LS6 Chevelle. The big disadvantage the Buick had was the durability of the 455 Stage 1 engine with its 2 bolt main bearing caps, thinwall casting, and undersized oiling system. That resulted in a lot of cracked engine blocks when put under an extreme load like drag racing. However they were still really quick because the Buick 455 weighed about 150 pounds less than a Chevy 454 big block despite having 1 cubic inch more of displacement

    • @banditboy2010
      @banditboy2010 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jeremythompson9122 Agreed. Ram Air IV camshaft was a 308/320 advertised duration which was lopey for a street car and sounded really nice. However, I never knew the engine specs on the 421, but boy oh boy, you could hear it coming from a mile ahead. What a distinctive sound that came out of the exhaust. A guy once told me in order to beat a hemi, you better pray it was slightly out of tune at the line. It takes skill to perfectly adjust both carbs and very few guys can manage it.

      @rosenb37 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      @bgh70, the Judge was not a stripped-down car at all - it was a deluxe GTO with the doodads that were starting to become popular at the time.
      Whatever the case, both the regular GTO and the Judge were available with this engine.

    • @bgh70
      @bgh70 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Judge was a low dollar performance car. It had many of the regular GTO options deleted, such as no trim rings on the wheels and the headlights did not close. It was built to go fast and nothing else.

    • @rosenb37
      @rosenb37 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      @bgh70
      As a rule of thumb, when someone says "Do some research on it" (as you did before you deleted it), he usually is the one who should do some research on it.
      As it stands, the Judge was a performance package that gave you the GTO's first step-up engine, spoiler and stripes, Rally IIs without trim rings and, I believe, Polyglas G70x14s. It was purely an image machine that had nothing to do with being low-dollar (especially considering it was over $300 over the standard GTO, which was WAY more expensive than a Road Runner or even Fairlane Cobra).
      Every GTO option was available for the Judge, including hidden headlights. Not sure where you got the idea that the Judge did not have hidden headlights.
      Are you one of those guys who sees a blue Judge with hidden headlights at a show and tells the owner that they have a fake car because Judges only came in orange without hidden headlights?
