Charley is one of the Masters of the hobby. His skills are so natural. He teaches by simply following what he does in his fish room. TY for the wonderful vid about Charley.
Good to see you're looking well Charley. It was great having you as a speaker at one of our fish shows about 20 years ago. It was for GPAS in Portland.
Now this is what fish keeping is all about rite there!! I'd luv to pick his brain! Kool ol'Kat! Nice job finding this treasure. I could watch these all day.
What a great fish room tour. Something tells me Charlie has forgotten more about fish keeping than most will ever know. We are lucky that he shared his room with you Lucas, so you could share it with us. Thank you!
Charlie is a great Guy. He is easy going, funny and loves sharing his accomplishments, and experiences but above all HIS failures. You can learn a lot by just asking one question and sitting back and listening to his answer and the stories to go along with them :-)
Love these fish room tours that you do of the people that have been in the hobby forever. So cool to see the home made contraptions they have come up with to fulfill a need or purpose. Today it's too easy to just purchase equipment. I guess that can be a good thing but to me building something myself is just more satisfying. I built my latest tank, stand, light canopy and sourced most of my hardscape from the jobsites and its become my favorite tank. This guy reminds me of my grandfather. Just a wealth of knowledge and so happy to share it. Great video Lucas
Where you sitting behind Charley? I meant to come to this months but the 28 days in Feb. through me off and thought it was going to be next week. Gets a lil crazy with keeping track of everyting thing sometimes.
That was so interesting, I just love the natural look to Charlies tanks. This mans knowledge needs to be recorded for prosperity. Thanks Lucas and visit him again soon.
these are always my favorite fishroom tours, we get to see the people that made the hobby what it is today, and learn so much of those little facts tht you only gwet from decades of being in the hobby.
The long fin white clouds are beautiful fish. I've never seen them before this video. What a great experience that had to be hanging with a cool ole guy that's been fish keeping for all his life. Lucky
This man has been a hobbyist as long as I've been alive - that is awesome. To think what is was like in 1953 without all of the technological things we have now is mind boggling ! Congratulations Charlie !!!!!
Best fish room tour ever! Very cool of him to give you that CD. Can you imagine all the time, throughout the years, that it took to collect enough for a CD that big? Amazing!
Over the past few decades, it seems all the renown writers in all the big fish magazines often refer to their friend and breeding guru Charlie Grimes in their columns. Now I finally get to 'meet' him. Those White Clouds are gorgeous, as were so many of his fish. This was a fun tour! I'm glad he was able to 'spare' a few bristlenose for you. He must have over 1000 in his fish room! That CD must be a gold mine!!
OMG, those were the most beautiful long fin white cloud minnows I've ever seen. Great fish room tour and interview. Thanks a bunch for do this and sharing it. Cheers.
I know I'm late to the party, but in case anyone is wondering, the Boraras sp. shown in the video is Boraras uropthalmoides (the exclamation point rasbora). They are fairly long-lived little fish under the right conditions. I've had some since 2015.
Love it! You made out like a bandit! Fish and plant growers are some of the most generous people in the world. I suspect a person could get lost for hours in his company in that room. :D
I think Charlie was droping a hint on the shrimp jesus when he said those fish ate all his shrimp...Better bag some up and go take another tour, and take us with ya. Peace
I stand corrected. After a little research this is what I found. I remember the Shedd Aquarium mentioning they were, they must have lied to me. Heres the list I found below: 1Barnum's American Museum1841New York, NYClosed2Boston Acquarial Gardens1859Boston, MAClosed3Woodward's Gardens1866San Francisco, CAClosed4National Acquarium1873Washington, DCClosed5Woods Hole Science Acquarium1885Woods Hole, MAOpen6New York Acquarium1896Brooklyn, NYOpen7Birch Acquarium at Scripps1903San Diego, CAOpen8Waikiki Aquarium1904Honululu, HIOpen9Belle Isle Aquarium1904Detroit, MIOpen10Philadelphia Aquarium1911Philadelphia, PAClosed11Shedd Aquarium1930Chicago, ILOpen
awesome, love all those plecos... But being from Detroit, I thought, that the Belle Isle Aquarium was the oldest one in the nation... or the 1st, i cant remember...
Great video! Heard Rosario LaCorte speak in the 60s. He had a reputation as the best breeder on the East Coast. Got back in the hobby in 2011 and Charlie is an inspiration ( as are you Lucas ). Thanks for all your dedication and content. My water here is 721 ppm TDS out the tap but it's ok once I get rid of the chlorine. Good luck with the RO system.
i catch wild darters here in ct lucus, ive breed them and collected them for mostly food , you have some amazingly breathtaking colorful species out in the mid usa where you are, if u have a cold area in your garage it would make for a fun cool addition !
Darters are cool, I really love the green rainbow darters. I used to catch rainbow darters all the time as a kid in the creek of my dads backyard. I could and prolly should collect some, someday.
Lrb: great video on your visit and tour of Charley Grimes fishroom. Very informative and relaxing like tours at your place. Suggestion, why not take some blue shrimp you promised to Charlie and do a re-visit of things of his fishroom and be sure to include some information on the "low cost r/o system" Charlie has- I would be interested in seeing such system and consider it as an alternative to the "highend" expensive system you are running.
Interesting. The Shedd Aquarium is the one who told me that lol. I was invited to the Belle Isle Aquarium for a private tour at the ALA from a guy that works there. Which I thought was cool and need to do some time.
Long fin mountain minnows are on my bucket list ever since I had some gold ones for a short time before they went to my buddys pond awesome tanks. Quick question how old are tanks on average when they have that red algae stuff.
@@LRBaquatics yeah long fin gold ones would be amazing. I didnt mean for it to come off as they where long fin I just had normal gold mountain minnows lol sorry.
you can get t-eight led replacements for any length , and any straight pin ho, no converter or mods needed all built in the bulb , when a old favorite light goes out and cant get parts , just bypass the ballast and use the led bulb replacement!!! awesome use of old housings!!! and the bulbs are cheap compared to florescent prices
I knew Charlie back in the day, and have been in that fishroom.... and yes, even downsized his stuff is impressive as anything! Does he still have the daphnia pond out back?
I didnt get to see the ponds out back since it was freezing out but did see he had one in the front. I cant remember if he said he removed the ponds or not but he did make mention of them.
Charley is one of the Masters of the hobby. His skills are so natural. He teaches by simply following what he does in his fish room. TY for the wonderful vid about Charley.
I absolutely loved this tour. I hope I'm this guy when I'm his age. Prime example that you always will learn from your elders. Most respect!!!!
Good to see you're looking well Charley. It was great having you as a speaker at one of our fish shows about 20 years ago. It was for GPAS in Portland.
Charlie needs to write a book about the hobby as it progressed thru the years since 1953
Totally agree with you
Now this is what fish keeping is all about rite there!! I'd luv to pick his brain! Kool ol'Kat!
Nice job finding this treasure. I could watch these all day.
Awesome personality. Love hearing from these guys. Titans of the hobby. Thanks for sharing Lucas.
What a great fish room tour. Something tells me Charlie has forgotten more about fish keeping than most will ever know. We are lucky that he shared his room with you Lucas, so you could share it with us. Thank you!

Hands down my favorite fish room tour I’ve seen on TH-cam.

What an awesome tour and host.
When I grow up, I want to be Charlie Grimes.
We never grow up 😉😁🇬🇧

Finally got a chance to watch this. What a great guy.
Lucas - no sure if you remember, I introduced myself at the CCAC meeting.
Where you sitting behind Charley? I meant to come to this months but the 28 days in Feb. through me off and thought it was going to be next week. Gets a lil crazy with keeping track of everyting thing sometimes.

His book Tropical Fish Keeping was one of the first books I read back before the internet even existed in 1984.
Great video what a guy Charlie is amazing awesome L.R.B❤️
these are always my favorite fishroom tours, we get to see the people that made the hobby what it is today, and learn so much of those little facts tht you only gwet from decades of being in the hobby.
Hey L, you could just see the years of experience in that fish room! I could spend all day in there :)
Great tour, learned a ton. Thank Charlie for me, it's so valuable getting the knowledge an wisdom from master aquarists.
The long fin white clouds are beautiful fish. I've never seen them before this video. What a great experience that had to be hanging with a cool ole guy that's been fish keeping for all his life. Lucky

Love these tours with old timers! So much to learn, thx Lucas
That is one of the best fish room tours that I have ever seen.
Great fish room tour. Thanks
Awesome fish room tour. I love seeing how the old school guys keep and breed. Yay, Charlie!
This man has been a hobbyist as long as I've been alive - that is awesome. To think what is was like in 1953 without all of the technological things we have now is mind boggling ! Congratulations Charlie !!!!!
He told me a few stories on how it was like off cam after the tour and it was pretty interesting.
He even built his first tank himself as a kid.
Those Black and Red Swordtail fry near the beginning is something I need to get hold of now!
I love fishroom tours.
What an incredible fish room. Love those wcmm! Those small live bearers at the start of the video were awesome as well!
Awesome fish room! Cant believe he lives so close to you. What a treasure. Hoosiers rock.
Awesome video .
Best fish room tour ever! Very cool of him to give you that CD. Can you imagine all the time, throughout the years, that it took to collect enough for a CD that big? Amazing!
Loved the video! It’s always neat to see others fish rooms especially from someone with such fish keeping history! Thank you Lucas 😊
You have been busy on here we all appreciate it
Absolutely love the long fine white clouds...awesome!
Fantastic video Lucas. He's been in the hobby way before John Endler rediscovered the endler's liverbearer in 1975.
Thats wild!
Great video and Charley lives in my city😁
So awesome. Those long fin white clouds are amazing. Thanks Charlie and Bretz.
What this Gem of man is in Indiana!! I’d love just to hang out with him in his fish room and soak up some of his wisdom!!
Haha, the labels for the wife made me laugh!
"And for those who don't know Indianapolis tap water is super hard." Yup. LOVE this long interview with this old timer. You did a great job.
This is paradise to my eyes.
Over the past few decades, it seems all the renown writers in all the big fish magazines often refer to their friend and breeding guru Charlie Grimes in their columns. Now I finally get to 'meet' him.

love it!.. as long as the signs are up, she's happy.
Great video! Love seeing fish rooms. So nice of him to share a few goodies with you! 💚😊
Excellent video; experience vis-a-vis passion. A hello from a fellow hobbyist on the other side of the pond at the Rock of Gibraltar.
Nice man.....add another rare plant to your collection. That's so tight. Nice tour man. Pretty lucky to get to hang out with him for a day.
There needs to be a movie based on the 2 squatter fish the man cant get out of the tank
I know I'm late to the party, but in case anyone is wondering, the Boraras sp. shown in the video is Boraras uropthalmoides (the exclamation point rasbora). They are fairly long-lived little fish under the right conditions. I've had some since 2015.
Super interview Lucas. Beautiful meteor white clouds! Loving Charlie Grimes' collection.
Such Natural looking tanks.
Oh, those panda corys are super healthy - look at those long barbels!
Love it! You made out like a bandit! Fish and plant growers are some of the most generous people in the world. I suspect a person could get lost for hours in his company in that room. :D

Great fish room. Actually, the oldest aquarium is the Belle Isle aquarium in Detroit.
I stand corrected. After a little research this is what I found. I remember the Shedd Aquarium mentioning they were, they must have lied to me. Heres the list I found below:

I've had some fun with wild darters here in N. Alabama as well. It's awesome what colorful fish you can find nearby.
Darters are cool, I really love the green rainbow darters. I used to catch rainbow darters all the time as a kid in the creek of my dads backyard. I could and prolly should collect some, someday.
I love those white clouds!
Lrb: great video on your visit and tour of

Oooo! Nice long fins!!
I wish I could get bristle-nose to breed like Charley. Also, the Belle Isle Aquarium is older then the Shedd.
Interesting. The Shedd Aquarium is the one who told me that lol. I was invited to the Belle Isle Aquarium for a private tour at the ALA from a guy that works there. Which I thought was cool and need to do some time.
what is the plant behind your head at the end of the vid
Long fin mountain minnows are on my bucket list ever since I had some gold ones for a short time before they went to my buddys pond awesome tanks. Quick question how old are tanks on average when they have that red algae stuff.
I would say around 8yrs or so. I havent come across any gold long fin mountain minnows but would love too!
@@LRBaquatics yeah long fin gold ones would be amazing. I didnt mean for it to come off as they where long fin I just had normal gold mountain minnows lol sorry.

What does he use for substrate in the potted plants?
Looked like sand, gravel, and laterite mix.
L.R.Bretz's Aquatics thanks for the reply
That's a pretty sweet fish toom! And some wonderful gifts haha
My bn plecos just had their first eggs and I had to do some rescuing lol
I like his long fin panda corys
Think those fish at the start are Leopard Danio's . I like his 'stepped' tanks with the substrate piled up at the rear - V.Good
