Not using the EQ in the Avalon is kind of a waste. It has a signature sound/color that is great when used properly. I can understand the fear to process a signal before tracking, but you can get to a point where you know your preamp well enough and have enough experience playing with its EQ (and even its compressor, which also has its own sound) to feel confident you are taking good decisions that won't be a problem after tracking. But to get there, you really need to start doing it and allow youself to make mistakes while you experiment. Just think that's the way things got done before DAWs and we have amazing sounding records from the 70s and 80s.
im buying a 2021 i mac and upgrading to avalon737 sp, neuman u87, uad appolo twin duo, 8 channel digital mixer, and im buying a vocal booth, bro im super excited
😮 damnnn man that's awesome! Happy for you bro enjoy it. The 737 is a grail piece for so many and rightfully so. I've been lowkey missing my 737 since I got rid of it 😕
And of course whether or not you need the high gain setting, depends on the volume level of your input source. The SPL created by a human voice talking is phenomenally different from the SPL created by a kick drum or a snare drum or 100W Soldano. So how the preamp is being hit would change enormously depending on the sound source. Whether or not you would want to have that high gain button engaged, would then of course, depend on the sound source.
@@UndergroundSoundProductions looked into the specs. According to the manual, pressing the high gain will boost your mic input by +18 db and line by +8 db. Both are balanced inputs, so my only guess that you run your input through line instead of mic is so that when you add the high gain feature you can crank your preamp gain to increase tube saturation within your recording.
So do you use this preamp as unison or? Because I reckon you'll need to dial in some preamp gain and since you're not using the preamp gain on the 737. I kind of wonder. I remember from when I demoed this thing I had to crank up the preamp gain on the 737 to get a decent signal (I used it in unison)
When I switch my button from line to mic I get a lot of feedback . I’m on an Apollo twin with a tlm 103 mic , is it becasue I have plug ins while recording ? I mean I fixed that so there no screeching .. but the only fix is turning my pre amp gain down a lot.. is it my setting or my Apollo twin
Quick question- You say you don't use the compression and EQ, but these are turned on in you example. You also have phase REV on and compressor attack on. did you mean to turn these features off? Trying to set mine up like yours.
Traded my Avalon 737 for a vintech 273. Got tired of the Avalon and Neumann u87ai combo after a couple years. Plus, the Avalon started acting up over time and required me calling them and having them walk me through taking the casing off and unplugging the cords in the power supply section from the board and reseating it again because sometimes the input wouldn’t pick up anything.
With all the other options out there, who needs an Avalon? I'd rather build my own channel strip with separate processors for all the money you spend on an Avalon.
Do i have to turn the mic signal completely down on the apollo but just use the avalon to make up the sound? Or do i have to turn on my mic signal on the apollo. Bought my apollo yesterday and it confuses me😂😂 turning mic signal to zero, turning comp and eq off and enabling high gain puts the vocals up to over 0 db but i want to have a maximum of -9db, even when the rapper is yelling but wajt to keep that avalon sound.
turn the channel your avalon is plugged into on the Apollo to line level. then make up for the gain on the avalon. the apollo is simply just the A/D converter for the chain so it doesn't actually need to provide any gain
You could easily have the mic angled sideways so that you can have your audience see you (which is important) with a little off axis audio that would still sound great.
He could also get very good results using a shotgun mic like a Sennheiser ME66 with a K6. There’s absolutely no reason to use a large diaphragm condenser right in front of your face. Audio science goes way beyond that.
If his Avalon was correctly set he would be able to sit almost a foot off of it and get the same sound he would being smashed up against his pop screen.
So connecting the twin to outboard gear or the other way around? If you meant outboard gear to twin, make sure the twin is in line level with the gain completely turned off, then use a quarter inch male trs cable from outboard gear into twins line input. However, for line out you use the two line outs on the back and you have to do some routing. I’d suggest watching raw techniques video on him using the pulteq eq’s with his twin. Great informative video that gets straight to the point and makes it simple enough to understand!

Yo Ty, Are you leaving the input source on “line” or are you using “mic” as your input source? I see in the video, your source was on “line”. Also you are running this in “unison” correct?
If my microphone is needing to be amplified it would be set to mic. If it’s an already amplified source running into the preamp, it’d be set on line and connected via balanced trs cable on back. Yes I was properly using this preamp at the time of filming
@@UndergroundSoundProductions so I switched the “mic” input button over to “line” and I’m getting no sound at all now. I’m also using the TLM103. I only get sound of I’m using the “mic” input instead. Any ideas?
Are you plugging the mic directly into the 737? Because if so you need it set to Mic so you can amplify the signal. That’s why you’re not hearing anything when set to line!
@@UndergroundSoundProductions Gotcha. So I take it that you must be plugged into a hardware pre before you plug into your Apollo correct? That’s how you’re able to run it on line input.

Thanks for the video, been debating on buying the UAD Plugin of the Avalon. This helps

High Gain= less tubes saturated? It just boosts the Input gain +8db on Line and +18db on Mic input to drive the tubes even harder.
