I may post my interpretation on a few videos just because I know a lot of people want theories about this song. My interpretation is that this song is about autistic masking. Autistic masking is a lot like regular social masking (pretending to be someone you’re not to appease social norms) that everyone experiences, but autistic masking is masking on hardcore mode. Autistic people are more likely to act in a way society deems to not be “appropriate”, and often get negative reactions from others that can range from harsh punishments to demonization to gaslighting. All of this starts at a remarkably young age, and often times many autistic people are unable to understand the social concepts necessary to predict we are doing something “socially inappropriate”. This means, from the moment an autistic person is brought into the world, every interaction is like a minefield. We can’t figure out what makes the bombs go off. They just do. One of the common socially inappropriate traits is sensory issues with food, being labeled by others as “picky eating”, as we see with our main character. Further, it is clear this character is in a controlled environment where they are being forced to partake in this. Many focus on forcing autistic people into masking. Such “therapies” can take up 40 hours a week in extreme cases, and therapists may withhold food, water, comfort items, and affection to get the desired responses. As these kids “grow up”, they will suffer physically and mentally from their constant years of masking, whether they do it subconsciously or consciously. Prolonged masking can lead to autistic burnout, where the exhausted autistic persons brain stops masking entirely. They act “more autistic” or “worse” than before, and to most of society, that is a problem with the person themselves and not their environment. You may be wondering how I know all this? Well. I am one of these autistic kids, all grown up, feeling burnt out every day and working to accept my own neurodivergence. It does so much damage to your ability to put up social boundaries as many autistic people are so excluded by society, we would do anything for the possibility of unconditional acceptance. Anyway, this song is legitimately awesome, no matter how you interpret it!

I also connect strongly to this song as well! I don't have any mental disabilities that I know of, but I have a physical one that kids constantly made of me because of the brace I have to wear. So I never 'got' social cues, and kids used that fake being my friend to hurt me. The brace, how my face was never quite able to make the 'right face', or my 'out there' personality, and I eventually just shut downed. I barely talked, became stone faced, and started to fester a hatred for my disability. I've been healing my scars over quarantine, and though the walls and fear are still there, I'm taking the first steps. Posting videos and streaming for social anxiety, make my own clothes to display my my personality even if I can't talk. It's a start... Ack! I rambled again! So sorry!

I may post my interpretation on a few videos just because I know a lot of people want theories about this song.
My interpretation is that this song is about autistic masking. Autistic masking is a lot like regular social masking (pretending to be someone you’re not to appease social norms) that everyone experiences, but autistic masking is masking on hardcore mode. Autistic people are more likely to act in a way society deems to not be “appropriate”, and often get negative reactions from others that can range from harsh punishments to demonization to gaslighting.
All of this starts at a remarkably young age, and often times many autistic people are unable to understand the social concepts necessary to predict we are doing something “socially inappropriate”. This means, from the moment an autistic person is brought into the world, every interaction is like a minefield. We can’t figure out what makes the bombs go off. They just do.
One of the common socially inappropriate traits is sensory issues with food, being labeled by others as “picky eating”, as we see with our main character. Further, it is clear this character is in a controlled environment where they are being forced to partake in this. Many focus on forcing autistic people into masking. Such “therapies” can take up 40 hours a week in extreme cases, and therapists may withhold food, water, comfort items, and affection to get the desired responses.
As these kids “grow up”, they will suffer physically and mentally from their constant years of masking, whether they do it subconsciously or consciously. Prolonged masking can lead to autistic burnout, where the exhausted autistic persons brain stops masking entirely. They act “more autistic” or “worse” than before, and to most of society, that is a problem with the person themselves and not their environment.
You may be wondering how I know all this? Well. I am one of these autistic kids, all grown up, feeling burnt out every day and working to accept my own neurodivergence. It does so much damage to your ability to put up social boundaries as many autistic people are so excluded by society, we would do anything for the possibility of unconditional acceptance.
Anyway, this song is legitimately awesome, no matter how you interpret it!

I don't have any mental disabilities that I know of, but I have a physical one that kids constantly made of me because of the brace I have to wear. So I never 'got' social cues, and kids used that fake being my friend to hurt me. The brace, how my face was never quite able to make the 'right face', or my 'out there' personality, and I eventually just shut downed. I barely talked, became stone faced, and started to fester a hatred for my disability. I've been healing my scars over quarantine, and though the walls and fear are still there, I'm taking the first steps. Posting videos and streaming for social anxiety, make my own clothes to display my my personality even if I can't talk. It's a start...
