To all the people saying that the question remained unanswered, your listening was dismissive at best. In the beginning of the video, authorities were questioning the ATC about why he let the flight land in such inappropriate weather conditions. That clearly answers the question if you would just use your listening skills.
Happened to me, I could see the weather and requested another runway. Just at the flare the tower issued a wind sheer alert. Gust to 40 kts. Skill is all that save me.
its called eyes, Im young but just about know as much as you do when these circumstances happen. I could tell if a storm / Some other weather ETC. was on my approach path. The wind sure , I would not have expected that . But the weather is not any skill , Its instinct.
may i ask why wouldn't he? like do you expect him to say 'USAir Flight 1016 its sunny and smooth like summer 0 kts!' *RAIN INTENSIFIES* (but on a legit note like what were you expecting)
Ultimately the pilot's decision/responsibility on continuing the approach using all available information, especially his own on-board radar (real time information).
PIC: Tower/Approach Control; "We see very heavy rain ahead on final, what do your old reports say?" Controller: "It was a smooth approach and landing four minutes ago" PIC: "I guess our eyesight and weather radar are wrong"
I've lived in NC all my life and i tell you I've traveled all over the world and have rarely been anywhere that weather can change so fast, the weather here can change in litterally an instant and we have every weather known to man, heat, cold, hurricanes, snow, thunderstorms, sleet, freezing rain, hail, tornadoes, fog, you name it, so it's it's no surprise this happened i remember this accident well.
That’s so true. The south is unpredictable weather wise. I’m in TN and much like NC, one second it could be sunny snd then the next sky could be black and lightning every time you blink. Scary stuff.
Copyright is not the reason. Why would you watch a 1 hour documentary, on youtube for free The way smithsonian documentaries earn money is from people who go to their website and PAY to watch the videos or they buy the smithsonian channel on the tv
If you're wondering, 57 souls onboard in which 37 perished. All of the fatalities were the passengers including children. Both pilots survived with minor injuries.
It depends on how much fuel they still have left in the tanks. Depending on how much they have it may not be possible to wait, though in these cases pilots will often be directed to other airports or airfields if possible.
The only cliff hangers I ever got from my professors was the warning of a pop test the next day. That they sprang on us as we were walking out the door-and half had already left.
That controller looks like an engineer that went down with a plane on a test flight....oh God oh God!!..... Illuminati Edit....the investigator WAS the pilot on that same flight haha
A similar situation happened in Argentina last week. Even though everyone survived, 15 passengers with minor injuries
question: why did this pilot land in the middle of a violent storm?

Offhandedly, it occurs to me that "Violet Storm" could easily be somebody's name......
