    Wow! You have really refined your already functional trailer into an even more beautiful one. I love the wood burning stove and the extra water capacity. Popping out the back and refiguring the table has made that space so much nicer. Adding windows and an tv door take away claustrophobic feeling and darkness that may have existed before. It’s truly a personal masterpiece! Thank you do much for sharing! I absolutely love it!
    As an aside, I was wondering if you were going to change to a composting toilet in the future. They seem to make do much more sense while boondocking. I need to check out your videos to see if you have comments on your experience with this change.

    • @waysoutback
      @waysoutback  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I really appreciate your comment. Thanks so much. To be honest when I made these changes it was a bit of a rush as we had a family trip planned to Arizona New Mexico area. So I didn’t get to complete everything I wanted to. I used the toilet I already owned from the trillium trailer I had before I built the cargo trailer. But yes a composting toilet in my opinion is a better option for us. I plan on building one this summer.

    I like the additional info. I watched the previous one, when the trailer was smaller. Now, it looks even better with the bigger tires, wider birth. Also, I like how you did the addition to upgrade the shower, move the sink, and in turn, gain more space. I have a 5x8 that, given a wider birth, should get me 7'x10' so enough space. I liked the idea of the bed turned around to get rid of the extender to the bed and gain space for another water tank. Looks great.

    • @waysoutback
      @waysoutback  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was just watching this again, and was wondering how wide your bench seats are? Around 24" maybe? I'm just wondering what would be possible in a 6 foot wide trailer. My thinking was to make one of the bench seats wide enough to be comfortable on one side, and then make the other one narrow so there would be enough leg room between the two.

    Nice work, great use of space. You have to be pretty proud of your camper. I was wondering about C02 build up, venting and whether the CO2 detector should be mounted much lower and closer to the floor. Thanks for the indepth video.

    • @waysoutback
      @waysoutback  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks! It’s a very good point you make. Maybe if I mounted it a bit lower it would be better. I believe the recommendation is not as low as say a propane monitor but sleeping height. I’ll look into it. I have had it go off once and a while, usually when it’s really windy outside, I forget to turn on the fan and the roof vent is open. Otherwise with the computer fan running it seems to keep the fumes venting outside. I don’t think I’d recommend it for everyone but if you’re aware of what’s happening I think it’s a great cold weather option.

    You really have to use the trailer, such as you did originally, to get the feel of what you need to add. The one item I personally would not install is the wood stove, but each to his own.
    Heated our house with wood for 37 years and that was enough for me.

    • @waysoutback
      @waysoutback  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it is true, as you live in it you definitely see where you can improve. I definitely went back and forth over adding a wood stove or not. I’d say a game changer is the small pressed bio bricks of hardwood shavings you can get at ace hardware. Throw one in and its set for a couple hours. I put one in at night shut it down and have coals In the morning. I think your right though, for 95% of people a wood stove would be kind of useless…. not many want to camp when it’s that cold!

      Honestly I love the wood heat if I could, I’d just have that but I do alot of winter camping and when you’re out hiking or fishing I just run the diesel and it keeps things from freezing. Probably overkill for 90% of ones that build a camper.

Yes this is the same trailer, but extended the back, I’m 6 ft and I wanted to be able to sleep from side to side, this gave more room for us to have a Woodstove and I plan to create a better closet area for storage. Yes you’ve outdone yourself!
    Thoughts:
    1. I’d love to see tandem wheels on this for safety purposes … I pulled a fully loaded front back top bottom uhaul from Florida to Oklahoma and says max speed 55 .. I found myself driving 65 and a couple of times doing 70 … I was pulling a solid stable rock and I wasn’t concerned about the tires blowing out because I had tandem axles … and the tires were brand new.
    2. The extension is excellent but, the blunt extension over the wheel well is a 90° extension which impedes airflow….perhaps you could build out a triangular box (drivers side) for betterair flow at the front of wheel well area…you could make triangular cabinet to but up against that 90° wall and use as outdoor storage with shelves…it would be small storage area but big enough to set a tent standing up inside the cabinet…or even a smaller folding chair (which I use a child’s chair)…the door is too close on the passenger side maybe just a smaller panel for better aerodynamic flow.
    3. The table: they have telescoping table legs now a days. LOL!!! 😂 no need to detach anything…just lower the legs in place…awe - food for thought.
    Once again OUTSTANDING!

    • @waysoutback
      @waysoutback  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you so much. The little bit of extra room made such a difference. The wood stove we debated on doing since it takes up valuable space, but we are so glad we did it. 2024 plans are to spend way more time camping. Just finishing up some truck upgrades and repairs and we will be back at it.🙂. Yes tandem axles would be an improvement for sure.

      1. We adjust our brakes and repackage our bearings every year and have new tires, and the trailer is very light so for now we feel pretty good about it.
      2.actually perhaps it’s not showing it well but we do have it angled out to the extension. That would have been neat to have outdoor storage.
      3.ya you got it, I just couldn’t find one for the size we needed with good reviews in our price range, maybe that will change in the future.

    • @waysoutback
      @waysoutback  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      A/c is something we just have never felt we needed personally. We don’t do very much camping in summer, and when we do, we go up north where it cools down in the evenings. With the max air fan we find it flows enough air, but in a warmer climate I think you would definitely need a/c.

    This is the biggest little cargo trailer conversion I’ve ever seen. Having the diesel heater and the wood stove is a great combination. Each has their advantages depending on the situation. Your seating at the table is incredible for such a small trailer. The shower is tight but it’s there. The windows, color scheme and metallic finishes really make for a roomy feeling inside.
    You’ve addressed so many wants and needs in this build and the results are nothing short of stunning.
    If you had to pick a shortcoming of this setup/layout, what would you say it is?

      It’s really tough with a trailer this small it always seems like trade offs when your building. To be honest there isn’t anything I’d change for us, after travelling in it for the last 4 weeks we both just love it! For a lot of people the wood stove would probably not be practical you could fit a lot of cupboards into that space but it’s sure a great dry heat!

      Glad it helped! I worked as a mechanic for 15yrs and now about 10yrs in construction so a lot of it carries over to building different things. A 7x14 will be a beautiful! To find my used parts I just searched “used RV parts” we have two within an couple hours drive. Another option for doors and windows is auto wrecking yards, some have RVs there and good prices on used parts, try to work out the price before pulling off the part. Happy building! Great trailer !! Do you have your Flooded Lead Acid Batteries vented to outside from underneath your seat? I had an old pop up camper and i was going to put them underneath my seat but ended on putting them outside in a sealed box but had them vented as they release gases when charging. I now have a travel trailer but insalled a 170 Ah Life Po4 battery under my seat as its a dry cell and it doesn't need ventilation.

      Thanks!
      In this one I didn’t but in my last one I did vent through the wall and floor. I found though they would only off gas’s while under heavy charge or discharge. Since the loads are light and the charger is small I just left it open to the cabin. So far so good but I’ll let you know if it gives me problems.
      I’ve wanted to run Lithium for awhile but since I’m in Canada and camp in the extreme cold it seems they say they use power just to stay warm… and if freeze they are toast. I am not sure though

    Hey Zac, great build! I'm looking into building something like what you have in this video. I bought your pdf guide. I love the Cubic Mini fireplace. Do you think that I could forgo the diesel heater? I'm looking to use my trailer for hunting and I could be away for a period of time while hunting but like you mentioned you don't want to risk things freezing. What about a low powered heater in the water tank or an electric heater. What that pull too much from the battery?

    • @waysoutback
      @waysoutback  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey sorry I thought I responded, I must have missed your comment!
      I’d definitely recommend going with some type of back up heat. Either an rv propane furnace or diesel heater. If you install it so it’s drawing the air across the tank and pipes you can go camping in very cold weather with no problem. If your out on a sled, fishing hiking you don’t have to run back to stoke the fire. I looked into the heating pads but I just felt they draw too much power for what you get. A diesel heater on low just chugging along will last days on a tank and stress free.
      Hope that helps a bit.

    I'm looking to make a camper trailer but I have no experience with towing. I own a 4WD turbo diesel Volkswagen Passat AllTrack station wagon that is putting out 140kW (at 3500 rpm) and 400Nm of torque (at 1750 rpm) for a basic model according to Google, do you think it would be able to tow a trailer like this? I'd make a few small changes that would probably make the trailer a little lighter!
    This trailer (other than a few minor changes) is exactly what I was thinking would be perfect for me.....you have the layout the same and even have the little wood stove/heater in the exact same location that I was thinking! I hope you don't mind but if I manage to get the finances and time to build a camper trailer that fits my current needs and wants, I'm going to steel your design! Fantastic build. Thankyou for sharing the thorough walkthrough. With the pronounced departure angle in back, which is smart, curious if you ever considered any sort of axle less independent suspension? With all the cargo trailer conversions happening and it becoming more and more popular, I'm surprised a trailer width of 6'6" isn't commonly available. It has to save so much interior design space to sleep side to side(east to west) instead of orienting a bed front to back. Would be nice to not be too wide by offering a 6'6" × 10' trailer. You have a great grasp of what you wanted and how to make it happen. Happy and safe traveling.

      @waysoutback  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the nice comment!
      I came very close to ordering the axle less but I would need to still run the 1” spacers or order heavy duty hubs for my 31x10.5 to clear… and get new rims that don’t match my truck. Pretty much I was just lazy so went with the straight axle.
      I agree a 6.5’ trailer would be perfect…. Good head room for side sleeping… I think I might have seen one recently but not sure???
      The tire is still on the outside of the box and you lose that departure angle.
