  • Golconda Fort, also known as Golla konda is undoubtedly one of most humongous and magnificent fortress complexes in India; situated 11 kms west of Hyderabad, in the state of Telangana.
According to a legend, a Shepherd Boy Came across an Idol of God at the Site, and is where the fort was built. Its history dates back to early 13th century, when it was ruled by the Kakatiya’s followed by Qutub Shahi kings during the 16th and 17th century. Most of what we see today, was built by the rulers of Qutb Shahi dynasty.
The fortress rests on a granite hill 120 meters high with mounted cannons, drawbridges, gateways, majestic halls, magazines, stables etc. The region is also known for the mines that have produced some of the most coveted and popular gems ever known such as Idol's Eye, the Hope Diamond, Darya-i-noor and the famous Koo-i-noor.
The hill fort has three lines of fortification. The outermost surrounds what was the city of Golconda, and has eight entrance gates or darwazas.
The part inside the second line is called the Bala Hisar. It is entered through an ornate gate followed by a porch, called the ‘clapping portico’ because a clap of the hands here can be heard all the way up in the innermost and the highest point situated about 1 km away in Golconda Fort; an effective security measure in those days.
Most of the palaces are at the base of the hill. There’s a separate zenana or wing for the royal ladies. The palaces have decorative elements like water bodies and arched stucco niches on the walls. This was one of them, believed to have been the grandest, and is now the venue for sound and light shows every evening.
The third line of fortification protects the innermost part of the fort. It roughly begins after an ambarkhana or granary. A little above the granary is a simple but stunning mosque named after Sultan Ibrahim Qutb Shah, the third ruler of the kingdom. The diamond cutting arches are huge point of attractions.
The Mahakali temple is further up, and is where Bonalu celebrations in the city begin each year.
Golconda Fort in Hyderabad is replete with history and if you have the time, don't hesitate to pay a visit to this monument. The fort gains an impressive place among the architectural marvels and heritage structures of India and is a testimony to Hyderabad’s glorious past.
