From someone that had no stamina at all and improved notably here: basically push your limits, get uncomfortable, do always a little bit more, a bit faster, and be consistent. Train at least 3x per week (1h minimum). That´s if you´re a recreational player like me with a regular job, etc. Divide the session into sprints, jogging, drills, control, shoots, passes, etc. Do everything WITH the ball. There is no point training without the ball if you want to play football, unless you need to build muscle, then hit the gym. My 2 cents.

Quit, now. If nothing else, switch to vaping. I smoked unfiltered tobacco for a decade and my stamina is toast. I switched over to vaping and it at least got me to where I can do exercises and some running without coughing and hacking after a half-mile. The bad thing is though that if you weren't completely addicted to nicotine before, you will be after you switch since it is so hilariously easy to hit your vape as opposed to smoking that you'll inevitably take hits at the first opportunity. If you can quit cold turkey, please do so. It will make your life so much better.
To be fair, just running 2.5 kilometres in 12 minutes for 3 weeks greatly improved my stamina. It only took me those three weeks to get my stamina at the level of the A team from my club.

Great input, thanks. About the running part, a great way to really up stamina quickly is running up a mountain with at least 400 vertical meters. Just try to run as much as you can and walk if you are exhausted. The first goal is to be able to run the whole time. After that start beating the clock. It is hard, but totally worth it.

I can't stress how important not smoking is. I'll give an example from myself. I don't smoke anything but I'm overweight about 10 kg (20lbs) with 26-27% body fat. So I'm not a specimen of any kind.
