How to Troubleshoot a dead battery and find a parasitic drain

  • If your car's battery is dead after sitting for a few days, but the battery and alternator work fine, you probably have a parasitic drain. It's quite common to find these in glove box lights (like the one I found) or in any aftermarket audio equipment.

    *This battery reconditioning program exceeded my presumptions. It worked on any drill battery, several AA and AAA batteries, **batery.repair** and any camera battery. The steps are simple and the act itself is exciting to do. No matter what type of battery you`ve got, it is sure to function again!*

    On a lot of BMW alternators if the diode is bad internally it will drain your battery. Even when the alternator is still charging . So check that too. Probably a video on that as well

    I'm currently battling a bad IBS and battery on an 2017 F15 X5 with 60k mi. The car died, was towed to dealership they found little to none, died again, boosted several times, died again. After an CEL came I scanned it and it gave me a code for a bad IBS. The car battery won't charge on a DEFA charger (the bad IBS fully depleted the battery 4 times or more). Will be replacing the battery and IBS in one motion, the register it, reset the DME and clear the codes. If this doesn't cut it then I have no idea what to do next...

      That's not a very difficult problem to find it all. I wouldn't be firing the "parts cannon" at it, that's going to get expensive very quickly. Find somebody with an amp meter that can determine how much Amps is being drawn, then put the vehicle to sleep and start measuring voltage drop across the top of the fuses until you find out which one is drawing excessive current, then get a wiring diagram see what's on that circuit and fix it.

    7:12 You don't need to pull the fuses to check for a drain. Simply reconnect the battery then use the meter under the bonnet/hood. Connect the meter to ground (BMWs have a positive and negative terminal under the bonnet/hood too, eventhough the battery is in the boot/trunk) then the other side to the fuse (each fuse has a little hole in it to connect a tester without removing the fuse)

    Question: 328i battery drained down to 11vdc. I charged up to 12.5vdc. Left it over night not cold out in garage. This morning voltage is at 12.2 vdc. Is .3 vdc excessive drain for over night?

    • @4thdimensiontravels855
      @4thdimensiontravels855 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, a battery will drop voltage after being charged, it's normal. In fact put the bolt meter on the battery as soon as you pull the charger and you can watch it drop, then level out.

    I have a 2008 E90 328Xi (Nav/HID/Htd Seats/Park Assist/Fully Loaded) and it needs the bigger more expensive battery $500.00 and the 180amp Bosch Alternator, except if you disconnect the battery you need to have it "PROGRAMMED" by BMW to re-connect / re-install it. HOW do I perform a parasitic draw test @ 10A without disconnecting my negative terminal?

    • @beetee801
      @beetee801 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brauch Faser You'd have to measure current draw from the fuses rather than the battery.

    i have a bmw like that you're testing and it is driving me nuts, each time i check for current leaks with my multimeter it only reads 0.02 amps always, so i plug in the battery terminal and keep going normally, checking battery tension every once in a while measuring always 12,60 to 12,80 volts (full charge) suddenly in an hour it drops to 3 or 4 volts, having this issue for months

    on my 2001 E46 I have to wait 16 minutes for the car to go to sleep. When I did this I did see a draw of about 700mA. I pulled out a fuse and the draw went right down. I put the fuse back in to double check and the draw didn't go back up... Which is weird.
    Any idea if the CPU detects this and shuts that circuit down? seems odd really. My symptom is I fully charge up the battery, leave the car for three days and then drive it around for 2-3 days, the car will not start the following morning. Battery is dead. Not a clue...must be a short somewhere.

    • @404notfound.....
      @404notfound..... 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pulling fuses to determine a parasitic drain is not the proper way to do it on a late model vehicle, all you're going to do is wake up the modules again and you'll end up chasing ghosts.

      yes, because you are completing the circuit with your meter. Just leave your meter connected and just wait for your car to go back to sleep.
