    I'm a month into M4 and Im loving it so far. I hit the trail almost everyday, and its nice to see progress. To put it in perspective, I previously had a 50lb Huffy MB, and had to pedal downhill. With the M4 it feels as if I'm actually accelerating uphill. Perhaps my Huffy worked me out really good! But the improvement in performance is clearly felt. Feels light. Love losing weight while having fun.

      Thanks for the feedback. I am thinking about getting this bike. I primarily want it to ride trails, but I don't intend to do any jumps or tricks or get on rough terrain for expert riders. I'm not into that. I'm an older female, and I don't need to break any bones. I just love the idea of riding through the woods since I go hiking a lot.

    • @falconwings
      @falconwings 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@queline213 I originally went to the shop to buy a Marlin 6, but the 4 was all they had in stock. I am not disappointed. Also, the newer 4 does have adjustable struts and cables are hidden.
      I am not into tricks either, just riding to stay healthy. I can ride at the same speed as the guys with the $1000+ bikes.
      Go get it before they are out of stock again.

      Yep, the CR-V can go on a dirt road but your really going to daily drive it not off-road it.

    • @kwaktak
      @kwaktak 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jamesthebikeguy exactly. The Marlins are good for family rides on Multi Use Paths (MUPs) that could be paved with asphalt or crushed gravel. You could even put a rack on it and ride on the shoulder to a local store or pick up take out. Taking it on single track though is going to require some significant upgrades whose overall cost might be better spent on a higher end Trek MTB like an XCaliber or a Roscoe. Marlins are essentially hybrids with slightly more sporty geometry.

  • @peterbaskind9872
    @peterbaskind9872 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    No. Please no. Riding a trail with a Tourney derailleur? The chain slap will be deafening.
    That may be an appropriate drivetrain for a basic commuter, but not a bike that’s intended for any real off-road riding. For $500, one should expect better.

    • @Jamesthebikeguy
      @Jamesthebikeguy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's true with anything up to a Clutch. This bike isn't intended for intense trail work anyway, it's a hybrid mtb and that derailleur will work fine.

    • @peterbaskind9872
      @peterbaskind9872 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      But that’s not how it’s marketed. Trek positions it as an entry-level MTB. If that’s its marketed purpose, it should be fit for the purpose.
      According to Trek:
      Marlin 4 is the perfect gateway to trail riding. It's ideal for new riders who want a mountain bike with knobby tires that can double as a rugged commuter.
      Tourney is neither intended nor appropriate for those uses.

    • @Jamesthebikeguy
      @Jamesthebikeguy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That copy and paste of your literally markets it the exact way I describe it. This is an entry MTB that can also be a commuter.

    I got my marlin 4 off Facebook marketplace almost brand new for 250 bucks. It is my first real mountain bike and after some months with it I really beat the shit out of it. It’s held up pretty nice so far and I’ve had a lot of fun on it but here’s some key pointers for anyone wanting to get it.
    1.) that rear derailleur is trash son (replacements are mad cheap but spend the extra 10 bucks and put on an acera)
    2.) the fork is perfect for light trail riding but as soon as you get into drops and jumps it’s gona get blown out (mine is barely hanging on a thread)
    3.) wider bars, grips, and tires made a hell of a difference
    4.) the brakes are in fact the most reliable thing on the bike so far
    5.) upgrading cassettes is really tricky cause I’ve been told the hubs won’t fit anything else (allegedly)
    6.) the wheels can get wobbly if you’re doing hardcore shit but I’ve yet to turn one into a taco and I’ve thoroughly beat them to death

    The Marlin 5 is a better starting point for someone who plans on getting into trail riding... it has hydraulic brakes and is a better place to start upgrading as you ride.
    If all you plan on doing is commuting or riding around town, skip the Marlin series altogether and go with the 820, it a better fit on the bike racks that are on city buses. The Marlin series is “almost” to long, trust me, mine hangs over the end just a bit. I don’t use it as a commuter (I’ve done a bunch of upgrades and it won’t even fit in the rack). Take a very serious look at what you plan to do with it before you buy either one of them.

    I just bought this bike today. I'm 50 years old and haven't done any serious biking in 20 years. I went out on the beginner trail with my 10 year old. I got him a Haro flightline. We had lots of fun.
    Let's say I keep at this and want to upgrade some parts. What would you start with? Anyone can chime in.
    Thanks.

    Many of the big brands have entry level bikes with tourney derailleurs and a basic 7 speed cogset but instead of fitting a freewheel they fit something like a sunrace 7 speed cassette and freehub which is much stronger and suitable for off-road use. Some manufacturers who fit freewheels at least have the sense to fit a solid axle but here you have a weak snappable quick release skewer and 7 speed freewheel which is rubbish quite frankly. I'd also point out that 6 speed freewheels are more reliable shifting than 7 speed freewheels. Both often wobble but the tighter spacing of the cogs on a 7 speed freewheel makes tolerances tighter. You could probably get a cheap $100 walmart bike that shifts more reliably than this Trek, they both have Tourney rear derailleurs but the 6 speed cogset on the walmart bike might shift more reliably.
    I feel Trek have gone too cheap here and should not be fitting a freewheel to such a bike which ultimately means it is mountain bike style rather than an actual usable mountain bike.
    Also I really resent the way the make up pretend names for their aluminium rather than tell customers what it actually is. It will likely be 6061 or could be 7005 but instead they give it a purely made up marketing name which I think shows complete dis-respect for their customers. it's something many US and European brands do, many of which are effectively importers buying from the cheapest factories in the far east they can find but using marketing to make them sound better than they are.
    This is a rubbish bike in my opinion best avoided. If you do buy it and want to use it off-road I would recommend a new rear wheel with a freehub and a 7 speed cassette. Hardtails get such a tough life anyway on the rear wheel when they are used off-road.
    Also lets not forget a freewheel limits the speed of the high gearing as the smallest cog tends to be 14 or possibly 13 where as a cassette can start at 11 so this bike will be slower than freehub equipped bikes. Upgrading the rear wheel will also make it much faster.

    • @adaycj
      @adaycj 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't disagree with the premise that this bike is barely adequate for any real trail beyond a rail trail. On the other hand, naming a cheap aluminum isn't disrespectful. The consumer buying this doesn't know 6061 from a beer can. As long as it says aluminum, that is the pertinent data. Likewise the difference in performance and function of 6 and 7 speed will be lost on any potential buyer. And any buyer that needs a wheel upgrade, that will also need the corresponding shifter, derailleur, cable, and possibly hanger upgrade would be better off just starting over. The only reason all those things would make it faster is because of a lighter wallet. I also completely disagree that a department store bike would be just as good. At least this bike can have parts and service sourced from a bike shop, and that will keep it at the campgrounds, rail trail, and community bike path longer ... and out of the landfill longer.
