I’d love to see the North Carolina Zoo grow and expand to new acres and territories with expansions dedicated to Asia, Australia, and South America, an oceans area complete with a North Carolina Aquarium location inside the North Carolina Zoo with a touch tank, coral reefs, seahorses, jellyfish, octopi, sea turtles, sharks, manatees, more pinnipeds like sea lions, sea otters, pelicans, penguins, and other marine animals, a dinosaur-themed area with a dinosaur dig-site play area and a walk-through dinosaur exhibit, some new aviaries, and a Madagascar exhibit for the Africa section! The zoo can also be littered with more gift shops, concession stands, wildlife and nature education centers, and more restrooms and it could even include more ride-based attractions including a bigger endangered species/wildlife carousel with lots more animals to ride on, a safari monorail ride for the Africa section, a safari train ride in the junction area, and a safari skyway ride that takes visitors to the North America and Africa sections! That’ll be a pretty cool batch of expansions with new additions in plenty more new acres!

To learn more about the North Carolina Zoo tune in on Secrets of the Zoo: North Carolina. It's under National Geographic on Disney Plus.
    It's a fantastic series.

With all the space they have, they have the potential to become the greatest zoo in America! (I was just watching a video of the famous Columbus Zoo, and found it to have a cramped, rundown, and tacky appearance.). Of course, the NC Zoo has a huge challenge in being less appealing to kids for some good reasons but one not-so-good reason: We were able to see very few animals in this video and mostly from a distance. And the NC Zoo does, in fact, have many fewer animal than most major zoos in spite of its vast area. The problem with these generous natural habits is that the people are just too far away from the animals. Hopefully, they can work on that without compromising on their values, which is the great thing about this zoo. Maybe walkovers that would allow visitors to see some animals from above. Also, live video cameras aimed at all the places where the animals like to hide away and snooze. I know people don't come to zoos to watch videos, but you do what you can. Video would certainly mean more when you see a few animals in the open and know exactly where you are peaking among their sheltered places to see the animals that are out of sight. Maybe some "sub exhibits" of some of the more gregarious animals that people like to see (and feed) and that are comfortable with people. If it didn't upset the animals, maybe some could get comfortable rotating their environment between their main exhibit and their more exposed and intimate exhibit. Or maybe some animals that bought as exotic pets and given up by people would be comfortable in small, less natural exhibits. I don't see anything wrong with letting a few animals who enjoy people and attention and are safe, have almost "petting zoo" contact with the visitors. Admittedly, that is taking a lot of the natural out of it, but then these animals were already taken out of nature. To get the big money needed to make this zoo all it can be, you have to give the people -- especially the kids -- more than a long walk through lovely terrain. The zoo is all so tastefully done that I believe they have the kind of people with the creativity to have it all, natural and spacious living spaces for the animals while still being sure that every kid had a least a few zoo experiences that excite and delight them.

From what I understand, they do have many plans for this zoo. I haven't done the Safari Excursion yet, but hopefully, we will this summer.
Disney also has a great series about the Zoo and its Veterinary Care.

We also have to remember the habitat was built this way to accommodate future animals as the population grows. Comparatively, it is a newer Zoo since opened in 1976.

I completely agree, a very well thought out comment. That was my only misgiving, the animals were just too far away. I could barely see the 3 legged wolf. As for Ronan the grizzly; I'm not joking when I say I wanted to get closer. I wonder if he wanted to. Anyway we had a wonderful day !!

I saw a lot of statues and only one big five. I would have to take a long bus trip and it looks like I'd have to stay in a hotel. I hope it would be worth it. If this is the biggest in the world I expected it to be like the African ones . Hundreds and hundreds of miles and safari s to see the animals in their own habitat. I didn't see any of that here. Hundreds possibly thousands of dollars and not see any real animals. Would be very disappointed.

Hopefully, they can help you out with any questions you might have. A New expansion is in the works now.
This is not considered a Reserve like in Africa. For the acreage, it's categorized as a Zoo. 2600 Acres.
