  • The North Carolina Zoo is located on wooded 2,600 acres (1,100 ha) centrally located in the heart of North Carolina, just south of Asheboro in Randolph County. With 500 acres (200 ha) developed, it is the world's largest natural habitat zoo and one of two state-supported zoos. The North Carolina Zoo is an agency of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
    Attractions
The North Carolina Zoo is home to 1,800 animals of more than 200 species. The Zoo is also one of only a few AZA (Association of Zoos & Aquariums) in the U.S. with a breeding pair of polar bears which is part of the Species Survival Plan.
    Layout
The North Carolina Zoo consists of Africa, North America, a global Aviary, and a global Desert. There are parking lots located on each end of Africa and North America, so during peak season, visitors can start their day from either side. With approximately five miles of walking paths, the Zoo also provides trams and air-conditioned buses for visitors.
The North Carolina Zoo's founding philosophy was that of having natural habitats - presenting animals together with plants in habitats that resemble the habitats in which they would be found in the wild. The 40-acre (160,000 m2) Watani Grasslands habitat alone is as large as many entire zoos.
    North America
The Cypress Swamp area is home to alligators, cougars, and a variety of reptiles, and amphibians. Rocky Coast depicts the rocky coasts of the Pacific Northwest, with a North American porcupine, polar bears, California sea lions, harbor seals, Arctic foxes, thick billed murres, parakeet auklets, and horned puffins. The streams of North Carolina can be seen in the Streamside habitat with Bobcats, river otters, and a number of snakes and fish, including the critically endangered Cape Fear shiner. At the Prairie habitat, visitors can see bison and elk. Black bears, grizzlies and red wolves also each have their own habitats.
    Desert
The flora and fauna of deserts are on display in the glass-domed "Mangum Desert". Outside are ocelots, while inside are a variety of reptiles such as Banded rock rattlesnake, black-tailed rattlesnake, Gorongosa girdled lizards, giant plated lizard, pancake tortoise, and birds such as burrowing owls, greater roadrunners, laughing kookaburras, white-winged doves, house finches, white-headed buffalo weavers, Gambel's quail, and Horned larks. A nocturnal section contains common vampire bats, beaded lizard, gila monster, sand cats, Cape porcupines, and sidewinders.
    Africa
The Forest Edge habitat is a 3.5-acre (14,000 m2), lightly wooded grassland enclosure with zebras, ostrich, and reticulated giraffes. The Watani Grasslands Reserve mimics the great savannas of Africa, totaling 47-acre (190,000 m2). Watani Grasslands Reserve is home to African elephants. Nearby southern white rhinos, Thomson's gazelles, dama gazelles, waterbucks, sitatungas, fringe-eared oryx and greater kudu all share a habitat, designed to look as one continuous expanse with the elephants looking out at the rhinos and the antelope. Chimpanzees can be seen in the Kitera Forest habitat. Western lowland gorillas inhabit the Forest Glade exhibit. African lions, hamadryas baboons and red river hogs each have their own habitats. Ring tailed lemurs and red ruffed lemurs from neighboring Madagascar were added to the Africa region after a refurbishment of the former patas monkey habitat.

sweet zoo, it look a bit like some kind of trails on nature with animal around you (a bit like a natural protected zone open for public)
nice you got a good weather, i would like a zoo with this configuration here, we usually have only zoos that are in circle. Wich is nice, but you quickly turn around with all the ways. i think its better with one big long road and then you can come back, its less confusing, but its also longuer to walk... its a dilemna XD
still, really love it, the habitat are massive for animals outside :O, thank you for this visit.

Yea Frank, the zoo was very nicely laid out. some zoo's have so many side paths you have to continually backtrack to see everything. The weather was good overall, the zoo has lots of shaded walking trails s you stay out of the sun.

  • @noahroy7313
    @noahroy7313 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Hey Tom!
I hope you’re well! I have LOTS of time stamps for you, just moments i liked or slight corrections. Let’s get straight into it, shall we?
I really enjoyed this Zoo! Massive Zoo by the looks of it! I loved that the Watson Grasslands is 40-Acres! As your description states, it’s as large as many entire Zoos! Absolutely outstanding!
The shot at 51:14 reminds me of a scene in one of my favourite movies, Jurassic Park. When Alan Grant,Ellie Sattler and the rest of the people first see a brachiosaurus which is the first dinosaur Grant ever sees. It then rears up on its hind legs to reach some high leaves as that iconic music plays in the background. Then Hammond ( Park Owner ) tells Grant that they have a T-Rex, Grant falls down from shock as he looks out onto the lake and sees a herd of Parasurolophus drinking water at the lake’s edge and 2 brachiosaurus traversing the lake, bellowing that beautiful sound, all while that iconic music plays in the background. Beautiful Scene, I’ll link it to you at the end of the comment, I highly suggest watching it!
Just something you said slightly wrong at 25:05: You pronounced it uromastyx, which is mostly right but pronounce the u as you, youromastyx. I hope that helps!
9:48: A word of advice poacher, ( look at one of the pictures and it’s description, the man standing in a boat ) don’t take a picture when you’re doing something Illegal, major eye roll 🙄.
30:36: Even though this area only lasted a couple minutes, I learned a few new facts, although I already knew most of it! Like I didn’t know that there were that many species of bees, I think it said 200.
I really loved how much room the bigger animals like elk, bison and elephants had! Great Zoo!
58:38: I didn’t know you knew what Harry Potter was Tom! I really hope that doesn’t come off mean lol.
1:00:40: I really loved all the ledges and rocks in this habitat! Really imitâtes their natural habitat!
Well I think that’s all for my comments on the Zoo but I do have a few questions for you Tom! I really was impressed with this Zoo!
So my first question is: You have mentioned to me before that very much like me, Polar Express is among your favourite Christmas films. What are some of your favourite scenes? Here’s my Top 3:
    3: The ice scene.
2: Fixing the light/Caribou Scene: “Here’s the light, Oop Oop I got it! DOOOOOHH!”
    “Euaha”
    “Light!”
    “Stop The Train!
    “Caribou?!”
    1: FlatTop Tunnel.
“So any questions? There is but 1 inch of clearance between the roof of this rattler and the roof of FlatTop Tunnel, Savy.
It’s just the ride up to the Hog Kid, this could get interesting.
    Ahhhh!
Get back up kid, hurry! Grab my loft stick!
Aaaahhhhh!” Cue epic music and skying down the train.
“When I say jump, you JUMP!!
    AHHH!”
“You? I thought you got thrown off and you’re driving the train?!”
Question 2: So you’re possibly 47 now, last time I asked you were 46 but that was a matter of months ago. My question is: Do you find you get tired sooner than you did say 10 years ago? I hope this doesn’t sound mean. Just because you walk a lot at work and on road trips, that’s why I’m asking.
Question 3: Ok so if this is too personal, you aren’t obligated to answer obviously but you mentioned in the past that you live with your dad. Do you live with your mom too or does she live somewhere else or even ( God Forbid ) if she’s even still alive. I apologize if this last one is touchy Tom.
Looking forward to your reply as always! Starting on this week’s video now! We have free time in class because of Halloween so I took this opportunity to finish this video and comment.

@Noah Roy I am quite familiar with the Jurassic Park movies and recall the scene you described. Thanks for the correction for my mispronunciation. I've seen all the Harry Potter films as well as reading all the books. I'm not THAT old yet 😛
The zoo has really natural habitats with plenty of room for the animals to roam.
The Polar Express is a wonderful movie. My favorite scenes would be where at the North Pole. The caboose detaches and rolls backwards. The kids have to get back going through the elf village and toy rooms.
I have always been high energy, I have a naturally faster walking pace. I do get tired after a long day of walking, especially at this massive zoo. I don't feel like a 16 year old anymore but I'm not quite ready for a walker with tennis balls at the bottom 😃
Both of my parents are alive, they've been separated since I was 18. My Dad moved in with me after he had a stroke about 10 years ago. Family is important, I still see my Mother all the time. Stay safe Noah 😊

@@TomsRoadTrippin You read the Harry Potter Books? Now that’s cool. I myself have read them multiple times and I’m going through them again for the 5th time.
Ya it’s a good scene from Jurassic Park!
I’m sorry to hear your dad had a stroke, I hope it wasn’t too bad at the time.
Separated parents eh Tom? Yet another thing we have in common.
Thanks for that information on your walking speed, I’m a pretty fast walker as well, which comes in handy at work.
I’m glad to hear you see your mother often, very important, she did give you life after all.
Stay Safe Tom! Currently working through this week’s video.

I’d love to see the North Carolina Zoo grow and expand to new acres and territories with expansions dedicated to Asia, Australia, and South America, an oceans area complete with a North Carolina Aquarium location inside the North Carolina Zoo with a touch tank, coral reefs, seahorses, jellyfish, octopi, sea turtles, sharks, manatees, more pinnipeds like sea lions, sea otters, pelicans, penguins, and other marine animals, a dinosaur-themed area with a dinosaur dig-site play area and a walk-through dinosaur exhibit, some new aviaries, and a Madagascar exhibit for the Africa section! The zoo can also be littered with more gift shops, concession stands, wildlife and nature education centers, and more restrooms and it could even include more ride-based attractions including a bigger endangered species/wildlife carousel with lots more animals to ride on, a safari monorail ride for the Africa section, a safari train ride in the junction area, and a safari skyway ride that takes visitors to the North America and Africa sections! That’ll be a pretty cool batch of expansions with new additions in plenty more new acres!

    • @TomsRoadTrippin
      @TomsRoadTrippin  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Current expansion plans will add an Asian section to the zoo. The new 10-acre Asia Continent expansion is in development and is scheduled to open in 2026. Asia will highlight iconic species such as tigers, Komodo dragons, Asian otters, majestic cranes and hornbills. Hopefully they will add additional continents and new animals in the future.

Different states have their way of opening area's. Avian Flu has caused most zoo's to temporarily close their bird aviary's to protect them.
